Expression of connective tissue growth factor in tumor tissues is an independent predictor of poor prognosis in patients with gastric cancer

AIM: To examine the expression of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), also known as CCN2, in gastric carcinoma (GC), and the correlation between the expression of CTGF, clinicopathologic features and clinical outcomes of patients with GC. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-two GC patients were included in the present study. All patients were followed up for at least 5 years. Proteins of CTGF were detected using the Powervision two-step immunostaining method. RESULTS: Of the specimens from 122 GC patients analyzed for CTGF expression, 58 (58/122, 47.5%) had a high CTGF expression in cytoplasm of gastric carcinoma cells and 64 (64/122, 52.5%) had a low CTGF expression. Patients with a high CTGF expression showed a higher incidence of lymph node metastasis than those with a low CTGF expression (P = 0.032). Patients with a high CTGF expression had significantly lower 5-year survival rate than those with a low CTGF expression (27.6% vs 46.9%, P = 0.0178), especially those staging Ⅰ+Ⅱ+Ⅲ (35.7% vs 65.2%, P = 0.0027). CONCluSION: GC patients with an elevated CTGF expression have more lymph node metastases and a shorter survival time. CTGF seems to be an independent prognostic factor for the successful differentiation of high-risk GC patients staging Ⅰ+Ⅱ+Ⅲ. Over-expression of CTGF in human GC cells results in an increased aggressive ability.

In order to increase the reaction rates between the molten steel and the slag and cut down the reduction time when the top slag of manganese ore is added into the molten steel,a method of directly alloying manganese ore has been experimented in a 500-kg induction *** results show that the manganese yield is greater than 90%when the wire feeding method is *** manganese yield is 43.26%within 1 *** contrast,the manganese yield for the top-slag adding process is only 10.98%for the same *** mass transfer rate of the manganese is greater in the molten steel than in the slag,and the limiting factor is the mass transfer rate of the manganese in the slag in the period of 10-30 *** slag composition area is closer to the area of high melting point for the wire feeding method than for the top-slag adding *** the slagging process,refining slag composed of C a O and SiO:is formed after 15 min;after 25-30 min,refining slag with a high basicity is formed and consists of CaO,SiO2 and Al203.

Phospholipase C zeta(PLC)is a key sperm-borne oocyte-activating factor that triggers Ca^(2+)oscillations and the subsequent block to polyspermy following gamete *** in PLCZ1,the gene encoding PLCζ,cause male infertility and intracytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI)fertilization failure;and PLCζ expression and localization patterns are significantly correlated with ICSI fertilization rate(FR).However,in conventional in vitro fertilization(cIVF),whether and how sperm PLCζ affects fertilization remain ***,we identified one previously reported and two novel PLCZ1 mutations associated with polyspermy in vitro that are characterized by excessive sperm-zona binding and a delay in pronuclei(PN)*** staining and oocyte activation testing revealed that virtually all spermatozoa from patients lacked functional PLCζ and were thus unable to evoke Ca^(2+) *** with an artificial oocyte activation treatment successfully rescued the polyspermic phenotype and resulted in a live ***,we analyzed PLCζ in an additional 58 males after cIVF treatment in the Reproductive and Genetic Hospital of CiTiC-Xiangya(Changsha,China)between February 2019 and January *** found that the proportion of spermatozoa that expressed PLCζ was positively correlated with both 2PN rate and total *** optimal cutoff value below which males were likely to experience low FR(total FR≤30%)after clVF was 56.7%for the proportion of spermatozoa expressing *** study expands the mutation and the phenotypic spectrum of PLCZ1 and further suggests that PLCζ constitutes a promising biomarker for identifying low FRs cases in cIVF due to sperm-related oocyte activation deficiency and that sperm PLCζ analysis may benefit the widermale population and not onlymen with IcsI failure.

Characterization and Wettability of ZnO Film Prepared by Chemical Etching Method

ZnO thin films were prepared by a chemical etching method and their wettability was investigated. The structure and surface composition structure were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectronic spectrometry（XPS）, X-ray diffraction（XRD） and Raman spectrometry. These analyses reveal that the etched films were large-scale micro-nanohierarchical structures composed of a Zn core and a ZnO coating. Superhy- drophobic surfaces with water contact angles of over 150~ were obtained by n-octadecanethiol（ODT） modification. The XPS and Raman results indicate that ODT molecules were bound to the ZnO surface with the S head group by forming Zn--S bond.

AIM: To investigate the efficacy of moxibustion in ulcerative colitis (UC) rats from morphological, immunological and molecular biological perspectives. METHODS: Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to a blank control group (normal rats, n = 6) and a model replication (MR) group (UC rats, n = 26). A UC model was established by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid/dextran sulfate sodium enema. Rats in the MR group were further randomly assigned to a 9-min moxibustion (9M) group (9 moxa-cone, n = 6), 6-min moxibustion (6M) group (6 moxa-cone, n = 6), 3-min moxibustion (3M) group (3 moxa-cone, n = 6), and a waiting list control (WLC) group (no moxibustion treatment, n = 6). Rats in the moxibustion treatment group were treated in 14 sessions over 28 d. Disease activity, local tissue morphology, serum level of interleukin (IL)-8 and IL-10, and expression of Toll-like receptor (TLR)9 as well as nuclear factor (NF)-kappa B p65 in colonic tissue were determined by disease activity index (DAI), hematoxylin and eosin staining, electron microscopy, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blotting, respectively. RESULTS: DAI was lowest in the 9M group and highest in the WLC group. The differences in DAI between the moxibustion treatment (3M, 6M, 9M) and no treatment groups were significant for all one-to-one comparisons (0.60 +/- 0.54 vs 1.20 +/- 0.44, 0.60 +/- 0.54 vs 1.80 +/- 0.45, 0.60 +/- 0.54 vs 3.0 +/- 0.45, respectively, P rences among these groups were significant for all comparisons (105.46 +/- 8.75 vs 76.61 +/- 3.58, 105.46 +/- 8.75 vs 69.78 +/- 1.87, 105.46 +/- 8.75 vs 67.41 +/- 1.84, respectively, P < 0.01 for IL-8; and 30.83 +/- 1.29 vs 75.64 +/- 1.90, 30.83 +/- 1.2

Electrorheological(ER)fluids based on nanorods of calcium and titanium precipitate(CTP)possess good ER *** investigate the shear stress and leaking current of CTP suspension from-15 to 230℃,and it is found that the ER effect increases at up to 150℃.Dielectric spectra of the CTP suspension at different temperatures indicate that the change of interface polarization can perfectly interpret the increment of ER effect and leaking *** Fourier transform infrared(FTIR)spectroscopy test shows that some compositions of the CTP particles decompose at temperature of 180℃,which leads to a consequential decrease of ER *** thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses(TG-DTA),we find that TiOC_(2)O_(4)(H_(2)O)_(2) plays a key role in the dielectric property and ER effect of CTP suspension.

The tea plant(Camellia sinensis L.)is an important commercial crop with remarkably high catechin *** is popular worldwide given the plant's health *** are the main astringent substance in tea and are synthesized mainly via the phenylpropanoid *** this study,eight cultivars of tea plants harvested both in spring and autumn were used to investigate differences in catechin concentrations by using high-performance liquid *** expression levels of genes associated with catechin biosynthesis were investigated using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain *** results indicated that the total catechin(TC)concentrations were significantly higher in tea plants harvested in autumn than in those harvested in spring,based on higher concentrations of epigallocatechin(EGC)in autumn tea(Prences in the F3H and ANS expression levels between spring and autumn tea indicate that F3H and ANS are potentially key genes affecting catechin accumulation in tea plants.

Introduction: Multimodality therapy, including preoperative chemoradiotherapy(CRT) and total mesorectal excision(TME), has effectively reduced local recurrence rates of rectal cancer over the past decade. However, the benefits and risks of the addition of neoadjuvant CRT to surgery need to be evaluated. This study was to compare the efficacy of TME with versus without preoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy(CCRT) involving XELOX regimen(oxaliplatin plus capecitabine) in Chinese patients with stages II and III mid/low rectal ***: We randomly assigned patients to the TME group(TME without preoperative CCRT) or CCRT + TME group(TME with preoperative CCRT). The primary endpoint was disease-free survival(DFS); the secondary endpoints were overall survival(OS), local and distant recurrence, tumor response to CRT, toxicity, sphincter preservation, and surgical complications. An interim analysis of the potential inferiority of DFS in the CCRT + TME group was planned when the first 180 patients had been followed up for at least 6 ***: A total of 94 patients in the TME group and 90 patients in the CCRT + TME group were able to be evaluated. The 3-year DFS and OS rates were 86.3 % and 91.5 % in the whole cohort, respectively. The 3-year DFS rates of the TME and CCRT + TME groups were 85.7% and 87.9 %(P = 0.766), respectively, and the 3-year OS rates were 90.7 % and 92.3 %(P = 0.855), respectively. The functional sphincter preservation rates of the TME and CCRT +TME groups were 71.3 % and 70.0 %(P = 0.849), respectively. In the TME group, 16(17.0 %) patients were proven to have p TNM stage I disease after surgery. In the CCRT + TME group, 32(35.6 %) patients achieved a pathologic complete response(p CR).Conclusions: Preliminary results indicated no significant differences in the DFS, OS, or functional sphincter preservation rates between the TME and CCRT + TME groups. However, preoperative CCRT with XELOX yielded a high p CR rate. Newer technique
