Decreased anaerobic performance and hormone adaptation after expedition to Peak Lenin

Background The change of anaerobic exercise abilities during and after a high-altitude expedition or hypoxic exposure is not well studied. To evaluate the effects of an extreme-altitude expedition on anaerobic performance, the lO-second supramaximal test and endocrine hormones were evaluated before and after an expedition to Peak Lenin. Methods Four subjects （3 male and 1 female, age （30.5＋16.5） years） were recruited into the study. Three sets of tests were performed, including a basic test at sea level and 20 days before first arrival at the base camp （3600 m）, a middle test done at day after returning from the summit to the base camp and the post test at the lOth day after return to the sea level. Both the supramaximal test, performed by a cycle ergometer, and body composition, performed by bioelectrical impedance analysis, were completed before the basic test and post test. The endocrine hormones including cortisol, growth hormone, testosterone, noradrenaline, adrenaline, dopamine, glucagon and β-endorphin were measured at all tests. Results Comparing the conditions before and after the expedition, the body measurement parameters were decreased alter the expedition, i.e., body weight （-4.22%, P〈O.05）, fat-free mass （-2.09%, P〈O.01） and body fat （-8.95%, P=0.172）. The peak power relative/body weight ratio （PP/BW） was similar （（9.70±1.97） vs （9.11±1.80） W/kg, P=-0.093）, while mean power/body weight ratio （MP/BW） was reduced significantly after the expedition （（9.14±1.77） vs （8.33±1.74） W/kg, P 〈0.05）. Peak power/fat-free mass （PP/FFM）, mean power/fat-free mass （MP/FFM） and fatigue index （FI） were significantly lower after the expedition （PP/FFM：（11.95±1.71） vs （10.99±1.59） W/kg, P 〈0.05; MP/FFM：（11.26±1.50） vs （10.04±1.55） W/kg, P〈O.O05; FI （85.55±4.17）% vs （77.25±4.40）%, P〈O.05）. Relationship between antibacterial activity of chitosan and surface characteristics of cell wall

AIM: Five representative waterborne pathogens were used to illustrate the relationship between chitosan’s antibac- terial activity and the surface characteristics of the bacterial cell wall. METHODS: Chitosan was prepared with averaged 75 % or 95 % deacetylated degree to examine its antibacterial activity against waterborne pathogens. Fresh microbial inoculants for the antibacterial assessment were prepared on nutrient agar at 37oC for 24 h. The evaluation items of antibacterial mechanism included hydrophilicity and negative charge analysis of cell surface, and adsorptive characteristics of chitosan to bacterial cell. All the experiments were applied in triplicate tests at least. RESULTS: Although cell wall hydrophilicity was similar among Gram-negative bacteria, the distribution of negative charge on their cell surfaces was quite different. More negatively charged cell surfaces had a greater interaction with chitosan, a phenomenon further confirmed by transmission electron micrography (TEM). CONCLUSION: Results showed the hydrophilicity in Gram-negative bacteria was much higher than in Gram-positive ones. The correlation coefficient 0.988 between the amount of absorbed chitosan and its inhibition efficiency indicated a close relationship.

Characterization of flgK gene and FlgK protein required for H pylori Colonization-from cloning to clinical relevance

AIM： To characterize the role of flgK and its protein product in Hpylori colonization. METHODS： The PCR cloning method identified the flgK gene. An isogenic flgK mutant was constructed by gene replacement and confirmed by Southern blot analysis and PCR analysis. The recombinant FlgK protein （r-FlgK） was purified. Electron microscopy （EM） was applied to demonstrate the flagella of H pylori. An in vitro motility test was assessed in semisolid medium. The densities of H pylori colonization with either the wild-type strain or its flgK mutant were compared among BALB/c mice with or without pre-immunization with r-FlgK. The serological responses to r-FlgK were analyzed for 70 clinical patients with different densities of H pylori colonization. RESULTS： From a duodenal ulcer strain, the flgK gene was cloned and it contained 1821 bp, with a 95.7% identity to the published sequences. No flagella were observed under EM for the mutant strain, which had a loss of motility. Hpylori density was lower in the BALB/c mice inoculated by the mutant or with pre-immunization with r-FlgK compared to unimmunized mice or mice inoculated by the wild-type strain （P 〈 0.05）. In the H pylori-infected patients, the serological responses to r-FlgK were uniformly low in titer.CONCLUSION： FlgK encoded by flgK is important for flagella formation and H pylori motility. Deficiency in FlgK or an enhanced serological response to r-FlgK can interfere with Hpylori colonization. FlgK of Hpylori could be a novel target for vaccination.

Synthesis and characterization of Cu-Pt/MWCNTs for use in electrocatalytic applications

Improving catalyst performance by studying the preparation parameters, material structures and analysis methods is important work for catalyst researchers. In this study, Cu-Pt nanocomposites with different metal ratios were synthesized on MWCNTs using a polyol method. The structures and morphologies of the nano hybrid catalysts were analyzed by XRD and TEM. The XRD results indicate that Pt and Cu formed a bimetallic solid solution. The average diameters of the Pt and Cu-Pt nanoparticles on MWCNTs were between 3-10 nm and 5-15 nm, respectively. The electrocatalytic behavior of methanol oxidation reactions was investigated by cyclic voltammery （CV）. Cu（20%）/[Pt/MWCNTs（1：4）], which contained an optimal degree of solid solution, enhanced the methanol oxidation to the greatest degree.

Inorganic solar cells, as durable photovoltaic devices for harvesting electric energy from sun light,have received tremendous attention due to the fear of exhausting the earth's energy resources and damaging the living environment due to greenhouse gases. Some recent developments in nanotechnology have opened up new avenues for more relevant inorganic solar cells produced by new photovoltaic conversion concepts and effective solar energy harvesting nanostructures. In this review, the multiple exciton generation effect solar cells, hot carrier solar cells, one dimensional material constructed asymmetrical schottky barrier arrays, noble nanoparticle induced plasmonic enhancement, and light trapping nanostructured semiconductor solar cells are highlighted.

Sonographic fatty liver, overweight and ischemic heart disease

AIM: To demonstrate the prevalence of sonographic fatty liver, overweight and ischemic heart disease (IHD) among the male workers in Taiwan, and to investigate the possible association of these three ***: From July to September 2003, a total of 2 088 male aircraft-maintenance workers aged from 22to 65 years (mean 40.5) underwent an annual health examination, including anthropometrical evaluation, blood pressure measurement, personal medical history assessment,biochemical blood analysis, abdominal ultrasonographic examination and digital electrocardiography (ECG). The Student's t-test, x2 test and multivariate logistic regression analysis were utilized to evaluate the relationship between IHD and salient risk ***: The all-over prevalence of overweight was 41.4%, and that of fatty liver was 29.5% (mild, moderate and severe fatty liver being 14.5%, 11.3%, and 3.7%,respectively); while the prevalence of ischemic changes on ECG was 17.1% in this study. The abnormal rates for conventional IHD risk factors including hypertension,dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia and overweight increased in accordance with the severity of fatty liver. Overweight and severity of fatty liver were independently associated with increased risks for developing IHD. Overweight subjects had a 1.32-fold (95%CI: 1.01-1.73) increased IHD risk. Participants with mild, moderate, and severe fatty liver had a 1.88-fold (95%CI: 1.37-2.6), 2.37-fold (95%CI: 1.66-3.37) and 2.76-fold (95%CI: 1.62-4.72)increased risk for developing IHD. The prevalence of ischemic ECG for the fatty liver-affected subjects with or without overweight was 30.1% and 19.1%, while that of overweight subjects free from fatty liver was 14.4%.Compared to the subjects without fatty liver nor overweight,IHD risk for the three subgroups above was as follows:OR: 2.95 (95%CI:2.31-4.09), OR: 1.60 (95%CI: 1.07-2.39)and OR: 1.11 (95%CI: 0.78-1.56), ***: The presence of fatty liver and its severity should be

The Ti fire found in high performance engines promotes the development of burn resistant Ti alloys. The burn resistant mechanism of Ti40 alloy is investigated. Ti40 alloy reveals good burn resistance. Its interfacial products between burning products and the matrix are tenacious, which retard the diffusion of oxygen into the matrix. Two burn resistant mechanisms, that is, fast scatter dispersion of heat and suppression of oxygen diffusion, are proposed.

AIM: To study the trends of major causes of visual impairment(VI) in adults in Sichuan,China and evaluate the effect of aging on the trends. ·METHODS: We used data from the National Sample Survey on Disabilities(NSSD) in Sichuan province conducted in 1987 and 2006. The age-adjusted prevalence of major causes of VI and the prevalence stratified by age in each cause were calculated and compared. The association between age and each cause of VI was also analyzed.·RESULTS: Retinal disease increased and became the second leading cause of VI in 2006 while blinding trachoma decreased markedly. Cataract and non-trachomatous corneal diseases were among the leading causes of VI in both years. We found associations between age and causes of VI,with age showing the strongest association with cataract and relatively lower associations with other causes. · CONCLUSION: In the last two decades,dramatic changes occurred in the major causes of VI with significantly increased retinal disease and decreased blinding trachoma. Aging of the population might be an important factor accounting for the changed trends of VI. Understanding the prevalence of VI,its major causes and trends over time can assist in prioritizing and developing effective interventional strategies and monitoring their impact.

Evapotranspiration estimation of Platycladus orientalis in Northern China based on various models

Platycladus orientalis is one of the most popular afforestation species and greening species for water management in arid and semi-arid regions of northern China. We applied various models to estimate and validate artificial P. orientalis forest evapotranspiration features with the goal of accurately estimating the water use of a *** plantation. The American Society of Civil Engineers Evapotranspiration–Penman–Monteith model（APM） and FAO56–Penman–Monteith model（FPM） are extensively applied for vegetation evapotranspiration estimation because their reliability has been validated by many scholars. The Priestley–Taylor model（PT） and Hargreaves model（HS） require only the daily maximum temperature,daily minimum temperature and solar radiation to estimate evapotranspiration and are thus widely applied to grasslands but not to forests. We used the Energy Balance Bowen Ratio（EBBR） system to validate the accuracy of the four models. The results indicated that：（1） Compared to the EBBR measurement annual value, APM was the most accurate, followed by FPM, and PT;（2） During the year, the accuracies of the four models varied. APM and FPM underestimated evapotranspiration during june, July and August, whereas PT and HS overestimated evapotranspiration during this period. In the rest of the year, the estimation accuracies were reversed;（3） An analysis of the possible reasons indicated that wind speed, air temperature and precipitation were the most important *** temperatures were measured in june, July and August, which led to an overestimation by PT and HS because these two models only calculated the temperature and radiation without vegetation information. Underestimation also occurred when a low temperature was recorded. Though APM and FPM addressed both meteorological and vegetation factors, slight deviations still existed; and（4） The two models were modified based on EBBR-measured data.
