Background: Communication is an essential element in nursing practice. Patients expressed low satisfaction at communication with nurses. Nursing students feel pressured on communication with patients and are not properly prepared to effectively communicate with the patients. Even newly graduated nurses also present communication with patients as the most difficult job in nursing practice. Hence communication skills should be learned and well trained throughout the college education in order to utilize the skills properly in clinical practice. Peer-evaluation in learning has been identified as an effective method in diverse populations of students from elementary students to adults. In addition, it has been demonstrated that peer-evaluation was useful to understand communication problems with patients in a sample of medical doctors. Peer-evaluation can improve learning motivation as well as communication skills of students. Among the visual audio devices, a video is the fastest method to facilitate comprehensive memory that leads to transmit learning. It has also been known as an effective method to develop a rapport with a patient and improve communication skills of health care practitioners. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of video based peer-evaluation on communication skills and learning motivation in nursing students. Methods: A non-equivalent control with pre-posttest design was used. The participants were 47 sophomore nursing students who enrolled in a course of fundamental nursing at a nursing college in South Korea in the Fall semester of 2008. Their grade point averages（GPA） were used to assign them to one of the groups;those with even numbers of GPA ranks were assigned to the intervention group and odd numbers to the control group. Protective effects of electroacupuncture on acetylsalicylic acid-induced acute gastritis in rats

AIM: To investigate the protective effects of electroacupuncture (EA) pretreatment on acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)-induced ulceration in rats. METHODS: We randomly divided 72 rats into three groups including control (administered with distilled water), ASA group (administered 100 mg/kg ASA) and EA group (administered EA + 100 mg/kg ASA). Each rat was fasted for 18 to 24 h before experimentation, and lesion scores, gastric acidity, cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and -2 mRNA levels, and total nitric oxide (NO) concentration were measured. RESULTS: The lesion scores of the EA group were significantly lower than those of the ASA group. Gastric acidity of the ASA and EA groups was reduced compared to the control group. COX-1 and -2 mRNA levels were significantly increased in the EA group as compared to the control and ASA groups, and NO levels were also significantly increased in the EA group as compared to the ASA group. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that EA-mediated protection against ASA-induced ulceration in rats may occur via gastric defense components.

In this study, we investigated the effects of streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetes on antioxi- dant-like protein-1 immunoreactivity, protein carbonyl levels, and malondialdehyde formation, a marker for lipid peroxidation, in the hippocampus. For this study, streptozotocin （75 mg/kg） was intraperitoneally injected into adult rats to induce type 1 diabetes. The three experimental pa- rameters were determined at 2, 3, 4 weeks after streptozotocin treatment. Fasting blood glucose levels significantly increased by 20.7-21.9 mM after streptozotocin treatment. The number of antioxidant-like protein-1 immunoreactive neurons significantly decreased in the hippocampal CA1 region, but not the dentate gyrus, 3 weeks after streptozotocin treatment compared to the control group. Malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl levels, which are modified by oxidative stress, significantly increased with a peak at 3 weeks after malondialdehyde treatment, and then decreased 4 weeks after malondialdehyde treatment. These results suggest that neurons in the hippocampal CA1 region, but not the dentate gyrus, are susceptible to oxidative stress 3 weeks after malondialdehyde treatment.

AIM: To evaluate the association of glutathione S-transferase mu (GSTM1) and glutathione S-transferase theta (GSTT1) null genotypes with the risk of gastric cancer (GC) and colorectal cancer (CRC) in a South Korean ***: We conducted a population-based, largescale case-control study including 2213 GCs, 1829 CRCs, and 1699 controls. Null and non-null genotypesof GSTM1 and GSTT1 were determined using realtime ***: The null genotypes of GSTM1 and GSTT1 were not signifi cantly associated with elevated risk of gastric (OR = 1.070, 95% CI = 0.935-1.224; OR = 1.101, 95% CI = 0.963-1.259, respectively) or colorec-tal cancer (OR = 1.065, 95% CI = 0.923-1.228; OR = 1.041, 95% CI = 0.903-1.200, respectively). The frequency of the combined null GST genotype was not different between the two cancer groups and controls. Moreover, smoking, drinking, and age did not modify the association between these genotypes and the risk of gastric or colorectal ***: GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes were not associated with increased risk of GC or CRC in Koreans.

A Case of Secondary Iris Cyst AfterPupilloplasty

Purpose: To investigate the pathogenesis of a secondary iris cyst with an immunohistochemical method. Methods: Single observational case report. A pathologic specimen was obtained from a 5-year-old girl who was found to have a secondary iris cyst. She had a history of previous penetrating ocular trauma and subsequent cataract surgery and pupilloplasty. Immunohistochemical staining with cytokeratin (CK) 19 and CK3 was used. Results: After immunohistochemical staining, the inner wall showed positive staining for CK19, which is specific for limbal, peripheral cornea and conjunctival epithelium, and negative staining for CK3, which is specific for corneal epithelium. Conclusions: With the aid of immunohistochemical analysis, a conjunctival epithelial origin was indicated, and pupilloplasty was identified as the causal event of the iris cyst while the possibility of primary iris cyst was ruled out.

Double guidewire technique vs transpancreatic precut sphincterotomy in difficult biliary cannulation

BACKGROUND Diagnostic accuracy of various tumor markers and their combinations for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)was not fully *** To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of alpha-fetoprotein(AFP),the Lens culinaris agglutinin-reactive fraction of AFP(AFP-L3),and protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II(PIVKA-II)and their combination for HCC *** Patients with newly detected liver mass or elevated serum AFP levels were considered *** AFP level,AFP-L3 fraction,and PIVKA-II level were measured at the first *** In total,622 patients were included;355 patients(57.1%)had chronic liver disease,and 208(33.4%)had liver *** was diagnosed in 160 patients(25.7%).The area under the receiver operating characteristics curves(AUROCs)of the serum AFP,AFP-L3 fraction,AFP-L3,and PIVKA-II levels for the diagnosis of HCC were 0.775,0.792,0.814,and 0.834,respectively.A novel diagnostic model was developed by classifying patients in a 1:1 ratio into training and validation *** the binary regression analysis of the training cohort,the AFP,AFP-L3 fraction,and PIVKA-II(ALPs)score was calculated as follows:ALPs score=3.8×[serum AFP level(ng/mL)×AFP-L3 fraction(%)×0.01]+0.2×PIVKA-II level(mAU/mL).The AUROC of the ALPs score for diagnosis of HCC was 0.878,significantly higher than that of serum AFP level(P<0.001),AFP-L3 fraction(P<0.001),PIVKA-II level(P=0.036),and AFP-L3 level(P=0.006).The optimal ALPs score cut-off was 5.3(sensitivity,85.0%,specificity 80.1%).The validation cohort showed similar *** The ALPs score calculated using serum AFP level,AFP-L3 fraction,and PIVKA-II level showed improved accuracy in HCC diagnosis.

DEPRESSANT EFFECTS OF ANESTHETICS ON ISOLATED HUMAN GRAVID AND NON-GRAVID UTERINE MUSCIE

Isolated gravid and non-gravid human uterine muscle activity was studied after exposure to enflurane, isoflurane, halothane, methoxyflurane, cyclopropane, and diethyl ether. The activity was assumed equal to the area under the contraction curve and was measured by a compensating polar plainmeter. All the tested anesthetics have a significant depressant effect on both gravid and non-gravid uterine muscle. The dose-response curve for all tested agents shows a linear relationship in a semilog plot. At equivalent minimal alveolar concentration (MAC), enflurane is the most potent uterine depressant, followed by isoflurane and halothane. The least potent uterine depressants are cyclopropane and methoxyflurane. No statistical difference (P>0.05) was found in sensitivity of gravid and non-gravid uterine muscle in response to anesthetics with the exception of halothane. Gravid uterine muscle is significantly more sensitive (P<0.01) to halothane.

Proportion and clinical features of never-smokers with non-small cell lung cancer

Background: The proportion of never?smokers with non?small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) is increasing, but that in Korea has not been well addressed in a large population. We aimed to evaluate the proportion and clinical features of never?smokers with NSCLC in a large single ***: We analyzed clinical data of 1860 consecutive patients who were newly diagnosed with NSCLC between June 2011 and December ***: Of the 1860 NSCLC patients, 707(38.0%) were never?smokers. The proportions of women(83.7% vs. 5.6%) and adenocarcinoma(89.8% vs. 44.9%) were higher among never?smokers than among ever?smokers. Significantly more never?smokers were diagnosed at a younger median age(65 vs. 68 years, P < 0.001) and earlier stage(stage I–II, 44.5% vs. 38.9%, P < 0.001) a= 0.015) compared with ever?smokers. Epidermal growth factor receptor mutations(57.8% vs. 24.4%, Pnd anaplastic lymphoma kinase rearrangements(7.8% vs. 2.8%, P < 0.001) were more common in never?smokers, whereas Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog mutations(5.8% vs. 9.6%, P ntly encountered in never?smokers than in ever?smokers. Never?smokers showed longer su= 0.021) were less frequervival after adjust?ing for the favorable effects of younger age, female sex, adenocarcinoma histology, better performance status, early stage disease, being asymptomatic at diagnosis, received antitumor treatment, and the presence of driver mutations(hazard ratio, 0.624; 95% confidence interval, 0.460–0.848; P = 0.003).Conclusions: More than one?third of the Korean patients with NSCLC were never?smokers. NSCLC in never?smokers had different clinical characteristics and major driver mutations and resulted in longer overall survival compared with NSCLC in ever?smokers.
