Impact of systemic steroids combined with immunosuppressive treatment on glaucomatous features in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

AIM:To evaluate the incidence of increased intraocular pressure(IOp)and glaucomatous changes in systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE)patients in comparison with systemic steroids and immunosuppressive ***:Sixty-two women with SLE were divided into two groups:treated(n=47,94 eyes)and not treated(n=15,30 eyes)with systemic glucocorticosteroids(GC;GC-free).Twenty-one individuals in GC group were treated with immunosuppressive agents(immunomodulating and biologic).The visual acuity and IOp with ocular pulsatile amplitude(OpA)measurements,as well as scanning laser polarimetry(GDx)with nerve fiber index(NFI)measurement,spectral domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT)of the optic disk with retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL)analysis and the macular region with ganglion cell analysis(GCA)were ***:Mean IOp values in group with combined GC and immunosuppressive therapy was 15.8±2.56 mm Hg and was significantly lower than in individuals with exclusive GC treatment(17.63±4.38 mm Hg,p=0.043).Contrary,no dif ferences in mean IOp values between GC-free group and individuals treated with combined GC and immunosuppressive therapy were detected(p=0.563).Similarly,mean IOp in GC was 17.14±3.94 mm Hg and in GC-free patients was equal to 16.67±3.45 mm Hg(p=0.671).According to treatment regimen no statistical differences in optic disk SD-OCT for RNFL thickness,RNFL symmetry,cupping volume and the C/D ratio were ***,no statistical differences for the mean and minimal ganglion cell layer(GCL)thickness measured in macular SD-OCT or NFI in GDx were ***:Combined immunosuppressive and systemic GC therapy in SLE patients may lower the risk of iatrogenic ocular *** relationship between treatment regimen and glaucomatous damage of optic nerve fibers in analyzed groups with SLE is detected.

The mycobiota of discoloured needles of the Swiss stone pine(pinus cembra L.) in the Tatra Mountains(poland)

The Swiss stone pine(pinus cembra L.) is an alpine species, fairly commonly occurring in the Alps and the Carpathians, close to the timberline. Natural sites of the Swiss stone pine in poland are found exclusively in the Tatra Mountains, within the area of the Tatra National park(TNp). In 2017, the health status of the needles of p. cembra was determined and their mycological analysis was carried out. As a result, 11 species of fungi were isolated from the needles showing disease symptoms, manifested by various shades of discoloration. The most frequently observed species was Fusarium oxysporum. It probably does not bring on disease symptoms, but may affect the development of other frequently isolated species(such as Sydowia polyspora, Lophodermium sp. and Lophodermium conigenum) that are pathogenic to pinus spp.

Experimental and numerical study of pseudo-2D circulating fluidized beds

We present experimental investigations and numerical simulations of a pseudo-2D riser. Experiments were performed for various airflow rates, particle types/diameters, and particle size distributions. pres- sure distributions along the wall of the riser were measured, Additional measurements from a smaller pseudo-2D riser （Kallio et al., 2009; Shah et al., 2012） were used to analyze horizontal solids volume fraction profiles. The experimental data were compared with simulation results carried out using an Euler-Euler approach, A mesh sensitivity study was conducted for numerical simulations and effects associated with simplifying real 3D geometry to a 2D model were examined. In addition, the effect of using an algebraic equation to represent the granular temperature versus a full partial differential equation also was examined for numerical simulations. Results showed small but significant near-wall sensitivity of the flow variables to mesh size. Substantial differences in mean pressure, solids distribution, and solid velocities were obtained, when 2D and 3D simulation results were compared. Finally, applying the simplified granular temperature equation for turbulent fluidization and for dilute-phase transport can lead to incorrect predictions in models,

Optical properties of silica sol-gel materials singly- and doubly-doped with Eu^3＋and Gd^3＋ ions

In present work, the optical and structural properties of silica sol-gel glasses and glass-ceramic materials singly- and dou- bly-doped with Eu3＋ and Gd3＋ ions were investigated. The optical properties of studied systems were determined based on absorption, excitation and emission spectra as well as luminescence decay analysis. Conducted studies clearly indicated a significant enhance- ment of visible emission originated from Eu3＋ ions as a result of changing the excitation mechanism, via Gd3＋Eu3＋ energy transfer. The luminescence intensity R-ratio was analyzed before and after heat-treatment process upon excitation at λex=393 nm and λex=273 nm. Moreover, the influence of excitation wavelength on luminescence decay time of the 5D0 excited state was also analyzed. The GdS＋-Eu3＋ energy transfer efficiencies for precursor and annealed samples were calculated based on luminescence lifetime of the 6p7/2 level of Gd3＋ ions. The X-ray diffraction measurements were conducted to verify the nature of obtained sol-gel materials. In re- sult, the formation of orthorhombic GdF3 nanocrystal phase dispersed in amorphous silica glass host was identified after annealing. Obtained results clearly indicated an incorporation of Eu3＋ activators into formed GdF3 nanocrystals. Thus, conducted heat-treatment process led to considerable changes in surrounding environment around Eu3＋ ions. Actually, it was found that en- ergy transfer phenomenon and heat-treatment process were responsible for significant improvement of Eu3＋ luminescence in stud- ied sol-gel samples.

Airborne Fungal Spores of Subalpine Zone of the Karkonosze and Izerskie Mountains(poland)

The incidence of the airborne fungal spores was determined in the air of subalpine zone of the Karkonosze Mountains and of the Izerskie Mountains in the borderland between poland and the Czech Republic. The experiment was conducted in2011 and 2012 at three to four week intervals from May to October. Air samples were taken from three locations in the Karkonosze Mts. and one from the Izerskie Mts. To examine the air, the Air Ideal 3p sampler and acidified pDA medium were used. The results show that Cladosporium cladosporioides was the most abundant spore type in all the sampling locations(up to 30%), followed by Alternaria alternata(16%–20%), Fusarium(up to 10%) and Sclerotinia sclerotiorium(up to 6%). The lower spore counts were recorded in May samples, compared to the other months. In this case the snow cover, that was still present in the area at the beginning of May,may be the reason for the lower, compared to June,July and August samplings, CFU(Colony Forming Unit) counts in that month.. The influx of air masses from SE, S and SW sectors in the area under study may affect dissemination of the plant-pathogenic fungi from the Czech Republic and from the South of Europe in general.

polarization effect in tip-enhanced infrared nanospect- roscopy studies of the selective Y5 receptor antagonist Lu AA33810

A novel approach of combining conventional infrared spectroscopy （IR） and atomic force microscopy （AFM） is presented to better understand the behavior of a drug adsorbed on a metal substrate at the nanoscale level. Tip-enhanced infrared nanospectroscopy （TEIRA） was used for the first time to investigate Lu AA33810, a selective brain-penetrating Y5 receptor antagonist, after immobilization on gold nanopartides （GNps）. Here, a gold coated AFM tip and gold substrate were used to obtain the near-field electromagnetic field trapping effect. Because of the huge signal enhancement, it was possible to obtain the spectral information regarding the self-assembled monolayer of the investigated molecule. The effect of two orthogonal polarizations （p- and s-polarization modulations） of the excitation laser beam on the spectral patterns is also discussed. The results show that there is a strong relationship between the state of polarization of the incident radiation and the relative infrared band intensities. Another factor affecting the observed spectral differences is the topology of the metal substrate, which may result in the induction of a cross-polarization effect. The performed analysis indicates that the C--C bond from the cyclohexyl group is oriented almost parallel to the metal surface. Conversely, the p- and s-polarized spectral variations suggest that the O=S---O angle is high enough to enable the simultaneous interaction of both oxygen atoms with the GNps.

An extensive analysis of iron-nitrogen-carbon(Fe-N-C)electrocatalysts synthesis and activity is presented concerning synthesis conditions such as initial Fe content,pyrolysis temperature and atmosphere(inert N_(2),reducing NH_(3),oxidizing Cl_(2) and their sequential combinations)and the influence of an external magnetic field on their performance in oxygen reduction reaction(ORR).Thermosetting porous polymers doped with FeCl_(3) were utilized as the Fe-N-C catalysts *** pyrolysis temperature was varied within a 700-900℃*** temperature and atmosphere of pyrolysis strongly affect the porosity and compositi on of the resultant Fe-N-C catalysts,while the in itial amount of Fe precursor shows much weaker *** under NH_(3) yields materials similar to those pyrolyzed under an inert atmosphere(N_(2)).In contrast,pyrolysis under Cl_(2) yields carbon of peculiar character with highly disordered structure and extensive *** application of a static external magnetic field strongly enhances the ORR process(herein studied in an alkaline environment)and the enhancement correlates with the Fe content in the Fe-N-C *** Fe-N-C materials containing ferromagnetic iron phase embedded in N-doped microporous carbon constitute attractive catalysts for magnetic field-aided anion exchange membrane fuel cell technology.
