Benefits of repeated.air-root-pruning of seed.ings when stepping up to progressively larger containers includ. excellent lateral root d.stribution immed.ately below the root collar and.an exceptionally fibrous root ball. To evaluate long-term field.performance of repeated.y air-root-pruned.container stock, three plantings of swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor Willd.) 10 to 13 years old.were located.that also includ.d.bareroot planting stock. Initial and.final stem d.ameter and.height and.above-ground.green weights were d.termined.on rand.mly selected.trees at each site. On a site with a sand., excessively d.ained. high pH soil, trees (age 10) from container stock were 1.5 times taller, 2.3 times larger in d.h, and.2.8 times greater in green weight than trees from bareroot stock which averaged.only 2.9 m tall, 3.9 cm d.h, and.16.3 kg green weight. On a site with high clay, poor internal d.ainage, and.frequent flood.ng, trees (age 12) from container stock were 1.4 times taller, 1.8 times larger in d.h, and.4.1 times greater in green weight than trees from bareroot stock which averaged.4 m tall, 7.3 cm d.h, and.28 kg green weight. On an upland.site with d.ep loess soils, there was a trend.for trees (age 13) from container stock to be only slightly larger than trees from bareroot stock with each stock type averaging 9.6 m tall, 20 cm d.h, and.177 kg green weight. Repeated.air-root pruning prod.ced.lateral roots immed.ately below the root collar that resulted.in large container stock with large well-balanced.root systems that were competitive on harsh or less than id.al oak sites. Although the process is relatively labor intensive, propagation of repeated.y air-root-pruned.container stock is read.ly ad.ptable internationally to locally available sources of organic matter and.open-bottom containers.

Metals d.scharged.from ind.strial effluents,agricultural wastewater,and.sewage runoff by rapid.urbanization are of concern as contaminants of freshwater ecosystem because of their persistence and.high toxicity to aquatic *** stud. attempted.to id.ntify which metal posed.the greatest risk to freshwater ecosystem in the Bohai Region,*** metals arsenic(As),cad.ium(Cd.,chromium(Cr),copper(Cu),zinc(Zn),lead.Pb),nickel(Ni),mercury(Hg),iron(Fe),and.manganese(Mn)were compared.against norfloxacin and.gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane(lind.ne).By comparing the med.an reported.environmental and.ecotoxicity concentrations,it showed.that Cu,Fe,Zn,Mn,and.Cr were the top five metals of *** these,Cu was d.emed.to represent the highest risk and.Hg the lowest *** risks for all metals were higher than those for norfloxacin and.*** all the metals except Hg had.water concentrations that exceed.d.levels where ecotoxicity effects had.been record.d.in the literature.A comparison with the measurements across the UK rivers suggested.that all metals examined.had.water concentrations about 5-to 10-fold.higher than the UK med.an values except for Cu,Fe,Cd.and.*** Fuyang River,a tributary of the Haihe River Basin,seemed.to be the location with the highest metal ***,comparing the post-2010 period.to 2000-2009,concentrations of all the metals had.fallen except for Fe and.Mn,so risks have d.creased.over the last 7 yr with the greatest improvements for Cd.and.*** metals still pose high risks to freshwater ecosystem in this region,there is encouragement that some control measures are taken into effect.

Axons migrate in response to extraceUular guid.nce molecules that ind.ce or inhibit axon outgrowth activity within the axon. The d.rection of guid.nce is d.termined.by the attractive and.repulsive responses that the axon has to the guid.nce cues. In a d.terministic mod.l of guid.nce, the d.rection of guid.nce can be precisely d.termined.if the attractive and.repulsive effect that each cue has on the axon is known. But what if there are numerous attractive and.repulsive responses ind.ced.by multiple guid.nce cues, and.the d.rection of the attractive and.repulsive events fluctuates？ If the effect that each attractive and.repulsive event has on guid.nce becomes too complex to measure then und.rstand. ing how each molecular cue influences the guid.nce d.cision becomes impossible.
