Occupational Health Surveillance: Pulmonary Function Test in Proppant Exposures

Workers involved.in hyd.aulic fracking processes are exposed.to various types of chemicals and.d.sts in their workplaces, such as proppants, which hold.open the fissures created.in the fracking process. Recently, ceramic proppants have been d.veloped.that may be less hazard.us to workers than trad.tional proppants. Pulmonary function testing of workers prod.cing ceramic proppant was used.to assess the potential inhalation hazard. of ceramic proppant. 100 male workers from a prod.cer of ceramic proppant were evaluated.with pulmonary function test d.ta collected.and.evaluated.using The American Thoracic Society (ATS) acceptability criteria. A comparison group was selected.from the Third.National Health and.Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) spirometry laboratory subset. No pulmonary function d.ficits were found.in the worker group in comparison to the NHANES III population. Mean FEV1 and.FVC values in workers were 3.8 and.4.8 liters respectively, and.were greater as compared.to the NHANES III population of similar d.mographics. An FEV1/FVC ratio of less than 0.8, when compared.to the NHANES III group, prod.ced.an od.s ratio of 0.44 in worker group, ind.cating less risk of preclinical pulmonary d.sfunction. Overall, exposure to ceramic proppant was not found.to prod.ce an ad.erse impact on pulmonary function in workers engaged.in the manufacture of ceramic proppant.

Microbes are good.sources of biologically active compound. that can be used.as pharmaceuticals and.agrochemicals. As part of our continuous efforts in search for biopesticid.s from natural sources, a fungus is isolated.from leaves of Pand.nus amaryllifolius that shows severe necrosis. This fungus is cultured.in potato d.xtrose agar and.id.ntified.as Curvularia intermed.a. The ethyl acetate extract of the liquid.culture med.um is phytotoxic. Id.ntification and.bioassay of αβ-d.hyd.ocurvularin (1) and.curvularin (2) from this fungus are d.scribed. Monoacetyld.hyd.ocurvularin (3), and.d.acetyld.hyd.ocurvularin (4) are synthesized.from 1. Phytoxicity rankings in a variety of bioassays are 1 > 2 > 4 > 3.

AIM:To investigate all patients referred.to our center with non-responsive celiac d.sease (NRCd.,to establish a cause for their continued.***:We assessed.all patients referred.to our center with non-responsive celiac d.sease over an 18-mo *** ind.vid.als were investigated.to establish the eitiology of their continued.*** patients were first seen in clinic where a thorough history and.examination were performed.with routine blood.work includ.ng tissue transglutaminase antibod. *** were also referred.to a specialist gastroenterology d.etician to try to id.ntift any lapses in the d.et and.sources of hid.en gluten ingestion.A repeat small intestinal biopsy was also performed.and.compared.to biopsies from the referring hospital where ***,lactulose hyd.ogen breath testing,pancreolauryl testing and.computed.tomography scan of the abd.men were und.rtaken if the symptoms *** clinical progress was followed.over a minimum of 2 ***:One hund.ed.and.twelve consecutive patients were referred.with *** were found.not to have celiac d.sease (Cd..Of the remaining 100 patients,45% were not ad.quately ad.ering to a strict gluten-free d.et,with 24 (53%) found.to be inad.ertently ingesting gluten,and.21 (47%) ad.itting *** colitis was d.agnosed.in 12% and.small bowel bacterial overgrowth in 9%.Refractory Cd.was d.agnosed.in 9%.Three of these were d.agnosed.with intestinal *** 2 years,78 patients remained.well,eight had.continuing symptoms,and.four had.***:In ind.vid.als with NRCd.a remed.able cause can be found.in 90%:with continued.gluten ingestion as the lead.ng *** propose an algorithm for investigation.

The purpose of this stud. is to evaluate occupational risk factors for nurses and.CNAs by analyzing the Florid. workers’ compensation claims d.tabase. Risk factors for the cause of injury, nature of injury, bod. part injured. and.d.mographic and.lifestyle factors were evaluated.for a sample of CNAs, nurses, and.restaurant servers. The results id.ntified.falls, lifting, being struck, and.pushing and.pulling as major causes for injury among nurses and.CNAs as compared.to servers. Regard.ng the nature of injury, sprains and.strains constituted.the majority of claims for nurses and.CNAS with the lower back being the bod. part most commonly injured.in a claim. The results of this stud. ind.cate that nurses and.CNAs are at far greater risk for physical injury than injury or illness from chemical or biological exposures. It is recommend.d.that emphasis must be placed.on interventions for musculoskeletal injuries such as falls and.lifting, taking into account environmental factors such as age and.lifestyle factors that further exacerbate risk for injury.
