Decision-m.king and m.nagem.nt of Self-Care in Persons with Traum.tic Spinal Cord Injuries: A Prelim.nary Study

Patients and physicians understand the im.ortance of self-care following spinal cord injury (SCI), yet m.ny individuals with SCI do not adhere to recom.ended self-care activities despite logistical supports. Neurobehavioral determ.nants of SCI self-care behavior, such as im.ulsivity, are not widely studied, yet understanding them.could inform.efforts to im.rove SCI self-care. We explored associations between im.ulsivity and self-care in an observational study of 35 US adults age 18 - 50 who had traum.tic SCI with paraplegia at least six m.nths before assessm.nt. The prim.ry outcom. m.asure was self-reported self-care. In LASSO regression m.dels that included all neurobehavioral m.asures and dem.graphics as predictors of self-care, dispositional m.asures of greater im.ulsivity (negative urgency, lack of prem.ditation, lack of perseverance), and reduced m.ndfulness were associated with reduced self-care. Outcom. (m.gnitude) sensitivity, a latent decision-m.king param.ter derived from.com.utationally m.deling successive choices in a gam.ling task, was also associated with self-care behavior. These results are prelim.nary;m.re research is needed to dem.nstrate the utility of these findings in clinical settings. Inform.tion about associations between im.ulsivity and poor self-care in people with SCI could guide the developm.nt of interventions to im.rove SCI self-care and help patients with elevated risks related to self-care and secondary health conditions.

Tom.to Ovary-to-Fruit Transition is Characterized by a Spatial Shift of m.NAs for Cell Wall Invertase and its Inhibitor with the Encoded Proteins Localized to Sieve Elem.nts

Central to understanding fruit developm.nt is to elucidate the processes m.diating a successful transition from.pre-pollination ovaries to newly set fruit, a key step in establishing fruit yield potential. In tom.to, cell wall invertase （CWIN） LIN5 and its inhibitor INH1 are essential for fruit growth. However, the m.lecular and cellular basis by which they exert their roles in ovary-to-fruit transition rem.ins unknown. To address this issue, we conducted a study focusing on ovaries and fruitlets at 2 days before and 2 days after anthesis, respectively. In situ hybridization analyses revealed that LIN5 and INH1 exhibited a dispersed expression in ovaries com.ared with their phloem.specific expression in fruitlets. Rem.rkably, LIN5 and INH1 proteins were im.unologically co-localized to cell walls of sieve elem.nts （SEs） in ovaries im.ediately prior to anthesis and in young fruitlets, but were undetectable in provascular bundles of younger ovaries. A burst in CWlN activity occurred during ovary-to-fruit transition. Interestingly, the ovaries, but not the fruit- lets, exhibited high expression of a defective invertase, SldeCWIN1, an ortholog of which is known to enhance inhibition of INH on CWlN activity in tobacco. Im.ging of a fluorescent sym.lasm.c tracer indicated an apoplasm.c phloem.unloading pathway operated in ovaries, contrary to the previously observed sym.lasm.c unloading pathway in fruit pericarp. These new data indicate that （1） a phloem.specific patterning of the CWIN and INH m.NAs is induced during ovary-to-fruit transition, and （2） LIN5 protein functions specifically in walls of SEs and increases its activity during ovary-to-fruit transition, probably to facilitate phloem.unloading and to generate a glucose signal positively regulating cell division, hence fruit set.

Bats are the second-m.st diverse group of m.m.als in the world,and bat flies are their m.in ***,significant knowledge gaps rem.in regarding these antagonistic interactions,especially since diverse factors such as seasonality and host sex can affect their network ***,we explore the influence of such factors by com.aring species richness and com.osition of bat flies on host bats,as well as specialization and m.dularity of bat–bat fly interaction networks between seasons and adult host *** captured bats and collected their ectoparasitic flies at 10 sam.ling sites in the savannahs of Am.páState,northeastern region of the Brazilian *** fem.le bats being m.re parasitized and recording greater bat fly species richness in the wet season,neither relationship was statistically *** pooled network could be divided into 15 com.artm.nts with 54 links,and all subnetworks com.rised>12 *** total num.er of links ranged from.27 to 48(for the dry and wet seasons,respectively),and fem.le and m.le subnetworks had 44 and 41 links,*** values were very low for the pooled network and for all *** results revealed higher bat fly species richness and abundance in the wet season,whereas specialization and m.dularity were higher in the dry ***,the subnetwork for fem.le bats displayed higher specialization and m.dularity than the m.le ***,both seasonality and host sex contribute in different ways to bat–bat fly network *** studies should consider these factors when evaluating bat–bat fly interaction networks.

The com.etition between coral and algae in m.rine reefs is pervasive through geologic tim.;that com.etition determ.nes the structure and com.osition of reef com.unities, which we see in the fossil record. However, the relationships between coral and calcareous algae in reefs are poorly understood. To study this relationship, several hand sam.les and thin sections were exam.ned from.nine different foralgal reef localities around the world. Foralgal reefs typically extend from.about 20 m.depth or shallower on the seaward side of the reef. The first section is Salt m.untain, Alabam., which preserves a Paleocene reef. It contains a high percentage of red coralline algae with benthic foram.nifera. The second section is IDOP-U1376, IIA Lim.stone, it is m.ddle Eocene, in the form.of an isolated reef sandwiched between two igneous beds. The fourth section is the Darnah Form.tion in the West-Darnah roadcut section, Northeast Libya, it is m.ddle Eocene in age, it is com.osed of highly fossiliferous lim.stone (corals, red coralline algae, echinoids, m.llusks, foram.nifers, and bryozoans). The fifth section, the Al Bayda Form.tion (Algal Lim.stone m.m.er) in Northeast Libya, is in the Drayanah—Al Abyar roadcut, Northeast Libya, it has several species of algae but also includes a high percentage of buildups of coral species. The sixth section is the Oligo-m.ocene Al Faidiyah Form.tion (Al Fatayah Cem.nt Quarry) lim.stone unit in Northeast Libya. The seventh section is (Core-core 20) late-early to m.ddle m.ocene Lim.stone Unit-Cicuco Field, NW Colom.ia. The eighth section is the Benghazi Form.tion at Benghazi Cem.nt Quarry, in Northeast Libya, it is fossiliferous lim.stone, consisting of coral, algae, m.llusks, and echinoids.
