Objective: to investigate the uptake rate of prostate specific antigen(PSA) testing among Hong Kong Chinese males aged 50 or above, and identify factors associated with the likelihood of undergoing a PSA ***: A population-based telephone survey was conducted in Hong Kong in 2007. the survey covered demographic information, perceived health status, use of complementary therapy, cancer screening behavior, perceived susceptibility to cancer and family history of cancer. Descriptive statistics, percentages and logistic regression analysis were used for data ***: A total of 1,002 men aged 50 or above took part in the study(response rate =67%), and the uptake rate of PSA testing was found to be 10%. Employment status, use of complementary therapy, perceiving regular visits to a doctor as good for health and the recommendations of health professionals were significant factors associated with PSA ***: the uptake rate of PSA testing in the study population was very low. Among all the factors identified, recommendations from health professionals had the strongest association with the uptake of PSA testing, and they should therefore take an active role in educating this population about cancer prevention and detection.

In this article, antibiogram and heavy metal resistance profile of bacteria isolated from giant freshwater prawn （Macrobrachium rosenbergii） hatchery in Malaysia are described. Although giant freshwater prawn was introduced into Malaysia since the 1980s, there was no database information on antibiogram and heavy metal resistance profile of bacteria from giant freshwater prawn （34. rosenbergii） hatchery in Malaysia. therefore, this study was carried out to determine the effectiveness of antibiotic and heavy metal resistance profile to control bacterial diseases in M. rosenbergii hatchery. the results can provide valuable information for local M. rosenbergii post-larval producer. Antibiotic sensitivity test was carried out by disk-diffusion method against 15 types of antibiotics as follows： oxolinic acid （2 μg）, ampicillin （10μg）, erythromycin （15μg）, furazolidone （15 μg）, lincomycin （15μg）, amoxicillin （25 μg）, colistin sulphate （25 μg）, doxycycline （30μg）, florfenicol （30 μg）, flumequine （30 lag）, nalidixic acid （30μg）, tetracycline （30μg）, oleandomycin （15μg）, fosfomycin （50μg）, and spiramycin （100 μg）, whereas heavy metal resistance profile of the present bacterial isolates was determined by 2-fold agar dilution technique. In this study, 5 types of bacteria were successfully isolated; they were Aeromonas spp. （n = 77）, Escherichia coli （n = 73）, Edwardsiella spp. （n = 62）, Salmonella spp. （n = 75）, and Vibrio spp. （n = 43）. the result showed that furazolidone was the most effective antibiotic to control the bacteria isolated in this study, approximately 89.7% of the bacterial isolates were sensitive to this antibiotic. Multiple antibiotic resistance （MAR） index indicated that the hatchery water source and M. rosenbergii post-larval and sediment tanks were at high-risk exposure to the tested antibiotic. Furthermore, all the tested heavy metals （Cd2＋, Cr6＋, Hg2＋, and Cu2＋） failed to inhibit the growth of the bacterial isolates. therefore, it indicated that the water

A total of 140 bacterial isolates have been successfully isolated from various organs of diseased American bullfrog （Rana catesbeiana） cultured in Malaysia. the most frequently isolated bacteria was Edwardsiella spp. （46 isolates） followed by Aeromonas spp. （33 isolates）, Flavobacterium spp. （31 isolates）, and Vibrio spp. （30 isolates）. Majority of the bacterial isolates were found sensitive to furazolidone （85.0%）, chloramphenicol （85.0%）, oxolinic acid （90.0%）, florfenicol （95.0%）, and flumequine （97.5%）. On the other hand, most of the bacterial isolates were resistant to oleandomycin （77.5%） and lincomycin （87.5%）. Nitrofurantoin and flumequine can be inhibited the growth of all of Vibrio spp. whereas all isolates of Edwardsiella spp. were found sensitive to florfenicol and flumequine. Multiple antibiotic resistance （MAR） index were in range of 0.30-0.40, indicating that bacterial isolates from cultured bullfrogs may have received high risk exposure to the tested antibiotics. In addition, 90-100% of the isolates were resistant to copper, cadmium, and chromium. these results provided insight information on tolerance level of bacterial isolates from cultured bullfrogs to 21 antibiotics as well as heavy metals.

Metallic nanoglasses are made of amorphous grains that are separated by lower-density amorphous boundaries,which have been proposed to enhance plasticity through the deflection of cracks and shear bands at *** has been difficult to experimentally control grain size and interfacial structure to understand their roles in plastic ***,we fabricate bulk nanoglasses via compaction and sintering of colloidally synthesized amorphous iron-boride *** nanoglasses have amor-phous grains with diameters from 116 nm to 576 nm and were tested using nanoindentation and mi-cropillar *** nanoglass with a grain size of 576 nm shows the highest elastic modulus and hardness of 101 GPa and 7.4 GPa,*** electron microscopy reveals that nanocrys-tals form within the nanoglasses during *** nanocrystal density correlates with higher nanoparticle crystallization enthalpy,an increase in plasticity,and a decrease in yield *** strain of 5.0%,yield strength of 3.8 GPa,and ultimate compressive strength of 2.7-3.8 GPa were *** show that the compaction of colloidal metallic glass nanoparticles results in robust bulk samples,with mechanical properties similar to that of other iron-based bulk metallic glasses.

trong>Background: trong>Dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging (DCE-MR) is becoming a widely accepted complementary method for diagnosing breast cancer and other cancers in adults. It is useful to predict tumor response to anticancer therapy and monitor the tumor response to the therapy. this form of imaging techniques has not been adequately explored in pediatric oncology patients. trong>Objective:trong> to determine the potential role of dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging (DCE-MR) in the diagnosis and treatment response monitoring of childhood and young adult extra-cranial tumors in routine clinical setting.trong> Methods:trong> Children with suspected extra-cranial solid tumors, including newly diagnosed or follow-up cases of confirmed tumors, were recruited. DCE-MR was performed with intravenous injection of 0.1 mmol/kg contrast. the enhancement time curves were plotted and the enhancement patterns were categorized into type 1, 2 and 3 curves. Enhancement curve patterns and maximal enhancement intensity were compared with types of tumor in newly diagnosed cases. the preoperative percentiles of inactive area on the colour map were compared with the necrotic areas on histologic sections of the resected specimens in follow-up cases. Pearson Chi-square test and Unpaired two-sample t-test were used for statistical analysis. trong>Results: trong>there were 36 patients, involving 28 malignant and 8 benign cases. there were 14 type 3 curves, (all of them were malignant tumors), 6 type 2 curves and 16 type 1 curves. All the benign cases (n = 8) demonstrated type 1 curve (accuracy & negative predictive value = 100%). All the malignant cases after treatment showed type 2 or 1 curve. For those cases with operation done afterwards, the extent of tumor necrosis was correlated closely with pathology findings (accuracy = 93.3%). trong>Conclusion:trong> type 1 curve was a good predictor of benign lesion. the precise and coordinated production of myelin is essential for proper development and function of the nervous system. Diseases that disrupt myelin, including multiple sclerosis, cause significant functional disability. Current treatment aims to reduce the inflammatory component of the disease, thereby preventing damage resulting from demyelination. However, therapies are not yet available to improve natural repair processes after damage has already occurred. A thorough understanding of the signaling mechanisms that regulate myelin generation will improve our ability to enhance repair. In this review, we summarize the positive and negative regulators of myelination, focusing primarily on central nervous system myelination. Axon-derived signals, extracellular signals from both diffusible factors and the extracellular matrix, and intracellular signaling pathways within myelinating oligodendrocytes are discussed. Much is known about the positive regulators that drive myelination, while less is known about the negative regulators that shift active myelination to myelin maintenance at the appropriate time. therefore, we also provide new data on potential negative regulators of CNS myelination.

Immunogenic antigens for vaccination are often created through the production of recombinant proteins using Escherichia coli.1 As a side product,aggregates called inclusion bodies(IBs)are formed,containing largely misfolded forms of the overexpressed recombinant protein.2 the effect of IBs on the immune system and whether they can be used as effective vaccine products remain *** non-native conformation of proteins upon accumulation in IBs abrogates their use as vaccines aimed at generating high-affinity antibodies.3 However,IBs exhibit unique properties,including mechanical and thermal stability due to their intrinsic particulate nature,biocompatibility,high antigenic content,low toxicity and relative resistance to *** characteristics make IBs attractive as an antigenic vaccine formulation for t cell responses to linear *** IBs can trigger adaptive cellular responses initiated via uptake by dendritic cells for presentation to t cells is unknown.

Surfaces can significantly alter the optical properties of nanomaterials,but they are difficult to control and their roles are hard to understand in highly reactive materials such as silicon *** this work,we investigate the role of the surface in controlling the optical transitions in highly luminescent silicon-derived *** combining high-pressure and low-temperature experiments,we experimentally correlate the anomalously intense and narrow transitions in the UV range with the surface oxides,while the visible transition and the photoluminescence(PL)are verified to originate from the Si-ligand charge transfer *** find that the high-pressure absorption and PL depends on the rigidity of the surface *** indicates that the surface plays a dominant role on the optical properties of these silicon-derived nanoparticles,and is different than other semiconductor nanomaterials,in which pressure-dependent optical transitions depend on lattice strain or phase *** work presents a comprehensive understanding of the optical transitions and the effect of surface ligands and surface oxidation in these highly luminescent Si-derived *** new insight into the oxidation-activated and ligand-mediated transitions,and the pressure-dependent PL may help with engineering the band structure of other highly-reactive optical nanomaterials.

Cu-tDPAt(H_(6)tDPAt=2,4,6-tris(3,5-dicarboxylphenylamino)-1,3,5-triazine),a stable nanoporous metal-organic framework with rht topology,has sparked broad interest as an adsorbent for several chemical separation *** this work,in situ synchrotron diffraction experiments followed by sequential LeBail refinements reveal that Cu-tDPAt shows unusually large anisotropic negative thermal expansion(NtE).the PASCal crystallography tool,used to analyze the magnitude of the NtE,reveals an average volumetric thermal expansion coefficientαv=-20.3 MK^(-1).this value is significantly higher than the one reported for Cu-BtC(also known as HKUSt-1),which contains the same Cu-paddlewheel building unit,αv=-12 MK^(-1).In situ synchrotron single crystal X-ray diffraction and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy(DRIFtS)were employed to shed light on the NtE *** these two methods,we were able to elucidate the three main structural motions that are responsible for the NtE *** more pronounced NtE behavior of Cu-tDPAt is attributed to the lower symmetry combined with the more complex ligand structure when compared to *** knowledge obtained in this work is important for understanding the behavior of the adsorbent under transient variable temperature conditions in fixed adsorption beds.
