Composition of common bile duct stones in Chinese patients during and after endoscopic sphincterotomy

AIM： Endoscopic sphincterotomy （ES） is a well-established therapeutic modality for the removal of common bile duct （CBD） stones. Alter ES there are still around 10% of patients that experience recurrent CBD stones. The aim of this study is to investigate the composition of CBD stones before and alter ES and its clinical significance in Chinese ***： From January 1996 to December 2003, 735 patients with CBD stones received ES at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital and stone specimens from 266 patients were sent for analysis. Seventy-five patients had recurrent CBD stones and stone specimens from 44 patients were sent for analysis. The composition of the stones was analyzed by infrared （IR） spectrometry and they were classified as cholesterol or bilirubinate stones according to the predominant composition. Clinical data were ***： In the initial 266 stone samples, 217 （82%） were bilirubinate stones, 42 （16%） were cholesterol stones,3 were calcium carbonate stones, 4 were mixed cholesterol and bilirubinate stones. Patients with bilirubinate stones were significantly older than patients with cholesterol stones （66＋13 years vs 56＋17 years, P = 0.001）. In the 44 recurrent stone samples, 38 （86%） were bilirubinate stones, 3 （7%） were cholesterol stones, and 3 were mixed cholesterol and bilirubinate stones. In 27 patients, both initial and recurrent stone specimens can be obtained,23 patients had bilirubinate stones initially and 2 became cholesterol stones in the recurrent attack. Checking Temporal Duration Properties of Timed Automata

In this paper, the problem of checking a timed automaton for a Duration Cal-culus formula of the form Temporal Duration Property is addressed. It is shown that TemporalDuration Properties are in the class of discretisable real-time properties of Timed Automata,and an algorithm is given to solve the problem based on linear programming techniques andthe depth-first search method in the integral region graph of the automaton. The complexityof the algorithm is in the same class as that of the solution of the reachability problem of timedautomata.

This is a case report of a patient who presented with acute pancreatitis without the common causes. A pancreatic biopsy revealed large B cell lymphoma. Spleen lymphoma with pancreatic involvement inducing acute pancreatitis, which is a rare disorder, was diagnosed. Here we also review the few similar cases reported in the literature.

The role of the vascularized bone marrow component as a continuous source of donor-derived hematopoietic stem cells that facilitate tolerance induction of vascularized composite allografts is not completely *** this study,vascularized composite tissue allograft transplantation outcomes between recipients receiving either conventional bone marrow transplantation(CBMT)or vascularized bone marrow(VBM)transplantation from Balb/c(H2d)to C57BL/6(H2b)mice were *** high-or low-dose CBMT(1.5×10^(8)or 3×10^(7)bone marrow cells,respectively)was *** addition,recipients were treated with costimulation blockade(1 mg anti-CD154 and 0.5 mg CTLA4Ig on postoperative days 0 and 2,respectively)and short-term rapamycin(3 mg/kg/day for the first posttransplant week and then every other day for another 3 weeks).Similar to high-dose conventional bone marrow transplantation,5/6 animals in the vascularized bone marrow group demonstrated long-term allograft survival(>120 days).In contrast,significantly shorter median survival was noted in the low-dose CBMT group(~64 days).Consistently high chimerism levels were observed in the VBM transplantation ***,low levels of circulating CD4^(+)and CD8^(+)T cells and a higher ratio of Treg to Teff cells were maintained in VBM transplantation and high-dose CBMT recipients(>30 days)but not in low-dose VBM transplant ***-specific hyporesponsiveness was shown in tolerant recipients in *** of the vascularized bone marrow component after secondary donor-specific skin transplantation did not affect either primary allograft or secondary skin graft survival.

Heterogeneous Structure Design to Strengthen Carbon-Containing CoCrFeNi High Entropy Alloy

A carbon-containing CoCrFeNi high entropy alloy(HEA)with heterogeneous structures was obtained through thermomechanical treatments,which induced concurrent recrystallization and carbide precipitation in the alloy.A combination of high yield strength(556 MPa)and large uniform elongation(45%)was achieved in the investigated *** enhancement of the strength is attributed to the combined effects of grain refinement,precipitation strengthening and microstructural *** work demonstrated that the heterogeneity design could be realized by thermomechanical processes,which provided a practical strategy for producing HEAs with high performance.

Role of gastric oxidative stress and nitric oxide in formation of hemorrhagic erosion in rats with ischemic brain

AIM： To investigate the role of gastric oxidative stress and nitric oxide （NO） in the formation of gastric hemorrhagic erosion and their protection by drugs in rats with ischemic brain. METHODS： Male Wistar rats were deprived of food for 24 h. Under chloral hydrate （300 mg/kg） anesthesia, bilateral carotid artery ligation was performed. The pylorus and carotid esophagus of the rats were also ligated. The stomachs were then irrigated for 3 h with either normal saline or simulated gastric juice containing 100 mmol/L HCI plus 17.4 mmol/L pepsin and 54 mmol/L NaCI. Rats were killed and stomachs were dissected. Gastric mucosa and gastric contents were harvested. The rat brain was dissected for the examination of ischemia by triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining method. Changes in gastric ulcerogenic parameters, such as decreased mucosal glutathione level as well as enhanced gastric acid back-diffusion, mucosal lipid peroxide generation, histamine concentration, luminal hemoglobin content and mucosal erosion in gastric samples, were measured. RESULTS： Bilateral carotid artery ligation produced severe brain ischemia （BI） in rats. An exacerbation of various ulcerogenic parameters and mucosal hemorrhagic erosions were observed in these rats. The exacerbated ulcerogenic parameters were significantly （P〈 0.05） attenuated by antioxidants, such as exogenous glutathione and allopurinol. These gastric parameters were also improved by intraperitoneal aminoguanidine （100 mg/kg） but were aggravated by N^G-nitro-L-argininemethyl ester （L-NAME： 25 mg/kg）. Intraperitoneal L-arginine （0-500 mg/kg） dose-dependently attenuated BI-induced aggravation of ulcerogenic parameters and hemorrhagic erosions that were reversed by L-NAME. CONCLUSION： BI could produce hemorrhagic erosions through gastric oxidative stress and activation of arginine-nitric oxide pathway.

Compacted clay possesses a low water permeability and has been widely used in geo-environmental facilities such as landfill cover *** studies revealed the potential applications of compacted biochar-amended clay(BAC)as an alternative landfill cover ***,the effects of biochar on the soil water retention curves(SWRCs)of clay at low suction are not *** study can help fill this knowledge gap by measuring the wetting and drying SWRCs of clay and BAC(20%biochar).Soils were compacted in instrumented soil columns and subjected to a wetting and drying cycle,and soil water content and suction were measured along with the soil *** was saturated faster when compared with *** drying,the soil water content of clay at 65 mm depth dropped to almost zero,while about 5%of water was retained in *** showed that biochar increased the soil water retention capacity of compacted clay upon *** showed that biochar-clay composite possesses a higher soil water retention capacity at a low soil suction range(<1000 kPa)compared with clay *** revealed the benefits of using compacted biochar-clay composite as a hydraulic barrier to minimize desiccation-induced cracks and potentially promote its serviceability,especially in arid and semi-arid *** composite is also a carbon sink material that can reduce landfill gas emissions and pollutant leaching.

Landslide Susceptibility Mapping by Using Landslide RatioBased Logistic Regression:A Case Study in the Southern Taiwan

The object of the research is to compare the model performance and explain the error source of original logistic regression landslide susceptibility model(abbreviated as or-LRLSM) and landslide ratio-based logistic regression landslide susceptibility model(abbreviated as lr-LRLSM) in the Chishan watershed with a serious landslide disaster after 2009 Typhoon Morakot. The landslide inventory induced by 2009 Typhoon Morakot in South Taiwan is the main research material, while the Chishan watershed is the research area. Six variables, including elevation, slope, aspect, geological formation, accumulated rainfall, and bank erosion, were included in the two models. The performance of lr-LRLSM is better than that of or-LRLSM. The Cox & Snell R2, Nagelkerke R2 value, and the area under the relative operating characteristic curve(abbreviated as AUC) of lrLRLSM is larger than those of or-LRLSM, and the average correct ratio for the lr-LRLSM to predict landslide or non-landslide is larger than that of orLRLSM by 5.0%. The increase of the average correct ratio(abbreviated as ACR) difference from or-LRLSM to lr-LRLSM shows in slope, revised accumulated rainfall, aspect, geological formation and bank erosion variables, and only light decreases in elevation variable. The error sources of continuous variables in building the or-LRLSM is the dissimilarity between the distribution of landslide ratio and production of coefficient and characteristic values, while those of categorical variables is due to low correlation of landslide ratio and the coefficient value of each parameter. Using the classification of landslide ratio as the database to build logistic regression landslide susceptibility model(abbreviated as LRLSM) can revise the errors. The comparison of or-LRLSM and lr-LRLSM in the Chishan watershed also shows that building the landslide susceptibility model(abbreviated as LSM) by using lr-LRLSM is practical and of better performance than that by using the or-LRLSM.

Effect of lysozyme chloride on betel quid chewing aggravated gastric oxidative stress and hemorrhagic ulcer in diabetic rats

AIM： To evaluate the protective effect of lysozyme chloride on betel quid chewing （BQC） aggravated gastric oxidative stress and hemorrhagic ulcer in rats with diabetes mellitus （DM）. METHODS： Male Wistar rats were challenged intravenously with streptozotocin （65 mg/kg） to induce DM. Rats were fed with regular pellet food or BQC-containing diets. Afcer 90 d, rats were deprived of food for 24 h. Rat stomachs were irrigated for 3 h with normal saline or simulated gastric juice. Rats were killed and gastric specimens were harvested. RESULTS： An enhancement of various gastric ulcerogenic parameters, including acid back-diffusion, mucosal lipid peroxide generation, as well as decreased glutathione levels and mucus content, were observed in DM rats. Afcer feeding DM rats with BQC, an exacerbation of these ulcerogenic parameters was achieved. Gastric juice caused a further aggravation of these ulcerogenic parameters. Daily intragastric lysozyme chloride dose-dependently inhibited exacerbation of various ulcerogenic parameters in those BQC-fed DM rats. CONCLUSION：（1） Gastric juice could aggravate both DM and BQC-fed DM rat hemorrhagic ulcer; （2） BQC exacerbated gastric hemorrhagic ulcer in DM rats via enhancing oxidative stress and reducing defensive factors; （3） lysozyme chloride effectively protected BQC aggravated gastric damage in DM rats.
