Source model of the 2018 MW7.5 Papua New Guinea earthquake constrained by InSAR measurements: Insight into a blind rupture beneath the New Guinea Highlands

The Southern Highland Fold and Thrust Belt（SHFTB）, the boundary of the Australian plate and the New Guinea Highland block, significantly contributes to the convergent deformation along the plate boundary. However, due to the lack of observation data, the detailed slip pattern of the SHFTB and the orogenic mechanism beneath the New Guinea Highlands remains controversial. On 25 February 2018, the MW7.5 Papua New Guinea（PNG） earthquake struck the southeastern segment of the SHFTB. The detailed rupture characteristics of this event is significant for further clarifying the inter-seismic slip pattern along the SHFTB. Here, the coseismic deformation field of this earthquake was obtained using high-resolution ALOS-2 satellite images. We find that the 2018 MW7.5 PNG earthquake ruptured a large-scaled fault（SHFTB） extending to the lower crust（deeper than 20 km） beneath the New Guinea Highlands, with a dip angle of 24°. The slips on the fault plane are equivalent to moment magnitudes of MW7.51. Three major asperities with thrust-dominated slip of up to 3.94 m are detected on the fault plane. This finding implies that the slip pattern on the eastern segment of the SHFTB is dominated by thrust, rather than with significant sinistral movement, as previously reported. The tectonic deformation across the New Guinea Highlands is possibly concentrated on the large-scale fault SHFTB and primarily controls the intracontinental orogeny in the central Papua New Guinea.

Spatio-temporal variation of water salinity in mangroves revealed by continuous monitoring and its relationship to floristic diversity

Salinity is among the most critical factors limiting the growth and species distribution of coastal plants.Water salinity in estuarine ecosystems varies temporally and spatially,but the variation patterns across different time scales and salinity fluctuation have rarely been quantified.The effects of salinity on floristic diversity in mangroves are not fully understood due to the temporal and spatial heterogeneity of salinity.In this study,we monitored water salinity at an interval of 10-min over one year in three mangrove catchment areas representing the outer part,middle part,and inner part respectively of Dongzhai Bay,Hainan,China.The number of mangrove community types and dominant mangrove species of the three catchment areas were also investigated.We found that the diurnal variation and dry-season intra-month variation in water salinity were driven by tidal cycles.The seasonal variation in water salinity was mainly driven by rainfall with higher salinity occurring in the dry season and lower salinity occurring in the wet season.Spatially,water salinity was highest at the outer part,intermediate at the middle part,and lowest at the inner part of the bay.The intra-month and annual fluctuations of water salinity were highest at the middle part and lowest at the outer part of the bay.The number of mangrove community types and dominant species were lowest at the outer part,intermediate at the middle part,and highest at the inner part of the bay.These results suggest that the temporal variation of water salinity in mangroves is driven by different factors at different time scales and therefore it is necessary to measure water salinity at different time scales to get a complete picture of the saline environment that mangroves experience.Spatially,lower salinity levels benefit mangrove species richness within a bay landscape,however,further research is needed to distinguish the effects of salinity fluctuation and salinity level in affecting mangrove species richness.

Development of a prognostic scoring system for hepatic vena cava Budd-Chiari syndrome with hepatocellular carcinoma

Background:Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is a serious complication of hepatic vena cava Budd-Chiari syndrome(HVC-BCS)that significantly reduces the survival time of patients.Our study aimed to analyze the prognostic factors influencing the survival of HVC-BCS patients with HCC and to develop a prognostic scoring system.Methods:The clinical and follow-up data of 64 HVC-BCS patients with HCC who received invasive treatment at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University between January 2015 and December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed.Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank tests were used to analyze the survival curve of patients and the difference in prognoses between the groups.Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to analyze the influence of biochemical,tumor,and etiological characteristics on the total survival time of patients,and a new prognostic scoring system was developed according to the regression coefficients of the independent predictors in the statistical model.The prediction efficiency was evaluated using the time-dependent receiver operating characteristics curve and concordance index.Results:Multivariate analysis showed that serum albumin level7 cm(HR=8.623,95%CI:3.771-19.715,P<0.001),and inferior vena cava stenosis(HR=3.612,95%CI:1.646-7.928,P=0.001)were independent predictors of survival.A prognostic scoring system was developed according to the above-mentioned independent predictors,and patients were classified into grades A,B,C and D.Significant differences in survival were found among the four groups.Conclusions:This study successfully developed a prognostic scoring system for HVC-BCS patients with HCC,which is helpful for clinical evaluation of patient prognosis.

Hydrodynamic characteristics and particle tracking of 90° lateral intakes at an inclined river slope

Lateral intakes are common in rivers.The pump effciency and sediment deposition are determined by the local hydrodynamic characteristics and mainstream division width.The hydraulic characteristics of lateral withdrawal from inclined river slopes at different intake elevations should be investigated.Meanwhile,the division width exhibits significant vertical non-uniformity at an inclined river slope,which should be clarified.Hence,a three-dimensional(3-D)hydrodynamic and particle-tracking model was developed with the Open Source Field Operation and Manipulation(Open FOAM),and the model was validated with physical model tests for 90°lateral withdrawal from an inclined side bank.The flow fields,withdrawal sources,and division widths were investigated with different intake bottom elevations,withdrawal discharges,and main channel velocities.This study showed that under inclined side bank conditions,water entered the intake at an oblique angle,causing significant 3-D spiral flows in the intake rather than two-dimensional closed recirculation.A lower withdrawal discharge,a lower bottom elevation of the intake,or a higher main channel velocity could further strengthen this phenomenon.The average division width and turbulent kinetic energy were smaller under inclined side bank conditions than under vertical bank conditions.With a low intake bottom elevation,a low withdrawal discharge,or a high main channel velocity,the sources of lateral withdrawal were in similar ranges near the local inclined bank in the vertical direction.Under inclined slope conditions,sediment deposition near the intake entrance could be reduced,compared to that under vertical slope conditions.The results provide hydrodynamic and sediment references for engineering designs for natural rivers with inclined terrains.

Theoretical study on the stability of nanobubbles and its verification in molecular dynamics simulation

The stability of vapor nanobubbles in bulk liquid was investigated theoretically and the critical bubble size was derived from macroscale thermodynamic equations,below which the system destabilizes with sharp drop in pressure.This critical size was quantitatively verified in molecular dynamic simulation using the Lennard-Jones model of argon,where stronger attraction between the molecules at lower density is found to contribute most to the drop of system pressure and,as the Laplace pressure on the curved bubble interface fails to balance the pressure difference across the interface,the bubbles become unstable.The theoretical model could be extended to other systems where reliable equations of state and interfacial tension are available.

Background Our recent pilot study suggests intra-arterial tenecteplase(TNK)during the first pass of endovascular treatment(EVT)seems safe,may increase first-pass reperfusion and good outcome in acute ischaemic stroke(AIS)patients with large-vessel occlusion(LVO).Aims To determine the efficacy and safety of intra-arterial TNK administration during EVT in AIS-LVO patients presenting up to 24 hours from symptom onset.Sample size estimates A maximum of 380 patients are required to test the superiority hypothesis with 80%power according to a two-side 0.05 level of significance,stratified by age,gender,baseline systolic blood pressure,prestroke modified Rankin Scale(mRS),baseline National Institute of Health stroke scale,baseline ASPECTS,time from onset to groin puncture,intravenous thrombolysis before EVT,stroke territory and stroke aetiology.Design Intra-arterial TNK during thrombectomy for acute stroke(BRETIS-TNK II)study is a prospective,randomised,adaptive enrichment,open-label,blinded end point,multicentre study.Eligible AIS-LVO patients are randomly assigned into the experimental group and control group with a ratio of 1:1.The experimental group will be treated with intra-arterial infusion of TNK during EVT.The control group will be treated with standard EVT.Outcome The primary end point is a favourable outcome,defined as an mRS score of 0–2 at 90 days.The primary safety end point is symptomatic intracranial haemorrhage within 48 hours,which is defined as an increase in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score of≥4 points as a result of the intracranial haemorrhage.Conclusions The results of BRETIS-TNK II will provide evidence for the efficacy and safety of intra-arterial TNK administration during EVT in AIS patients with LVO.

Intermittent melena and refractory anemia due to jejunal cavernous lymphangioma:A case report

BACKGROUND Lymphangiomas in the gastrointestinal tract are extremely rare in adults.As a benign lesion,small intestine lymphangiomas often remain asymptomatic and pose challenges for definitive diagnosis.However,lymphangiomas can give rise to complications such as abdominal pain,bleeding,volvulus,and intussusception.Here,we report a case of jejunal cavernous lymphangioma that presented with intermittent melena and refractory anemia in a male adult.CASE SUMMARY A 66-year-old man presented with intermittent melena,fatigue and refractory anemia nine months prior.Esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy were performed many times and revealed no apparent bleeding.Conservative management,including transfusion,hemostasis,gastric acid secretion inhibition and symptomatic treatment,was performed,but the lesions tended to recur shortly after surgery.Ultimately,the patient underwent capsule endoscopy,which revealed a more than 10 cm lesion accompanied by active bleeding.After singleballoon enteroscopy and biopsy,a diagnosis of jejunal cavernous lymphangioma was confirmed,and the patient underwent surgical resection.No complications or recurrences were observed postoperatively.CONCLUSION Jejunal cavernous lymphangioma should be considered a cause of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding.Capsule endoscopy and single-balloon enteroscopy can facilitate diagnosis.Surgical resection is an effective management method.

Electrocatalytic water splitting coupled with sustainable energies is identified as an environmentally friendly and renewable strategy to generate high-quality hydrogen for the fuel cells.However,the main challenge is to develop high performance,low cost and chemically stable electrocatalysts to decline the energy barriers and enhance the sluggish kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).Herein,a three-dimensional hierarchically ordered macroporous Ru-CoP@NC electrocatalyst(3DOM Ru-CoP@NC)derived from ordered macro-microporous metal-organic frameworks has been prepared using the precursor@template and double-solvent methods.The prepared 3DOM Ru-CoP@NC catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 15 mV(j=10 mA·cm^(-2))and a reaction Tafel slope of 38 mV·dec^(-1)in alkaline electrolyte,which are superior to commercial Pt@C catalyst.Additionally,the overpotential and reaction Tafel slope of this catalyst in acidic media are 45 mV and 50 mV·dec^(-1),respectively.The outstanding HER activities of 3DOM Ru-CoP@NC catalysts are ascribed to the 3D highly interconnectedreticular nanospaces that can increase effective reaction active sites.The N dope d carbon framework improves the electronic properties and conductivity.Moreover,the strong interaction of Ru and CoP nanoparticles also boosts the HER process.These results indicate that 3DOM Ru-CoP@NC catalysts with high catalytic activities have a broad application prospect in the future.

Next‑Generation Sequencing‑Based Copy Number Variation Analysis in Chinese Patients with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Revealed Novel DNAH5 Copy Number Variations

Primary ciliary dyskinesia(PCD)is a rare disorder characterized by extensive genetic heterogeneity.However,in the genetic pathogenesis of PCD,copy number variation(CNV)has not received sufcient attention and has rarely been reported,especially in China.Next-generation sequencing(NGS)followed by targeted CNV analysis was used in patients highly suspected to have PCD with negative results in routine whole-exome sequencing(WES)analysis.Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction(qPCR)and Sanger sequencing were used to confrm these CNVs.To further characterize the ciliary phenotypes,high-speed video microscopy analysis(HSVA),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),and immunofuorescence(IF)analysis were used.Patient 1(F1:II-1),a 0.6-year-old girl,came from a nonconsanguineous family-I.She presented with situs inversus totalis,neonatal respiratory distress,and sinusitis.The nasal nitric oxide level was markedly reduced.The respiratory cilia beat with reduced amplitude.TEM revealed shortened outer dynein arms(ODA)of cilia.chr5:13717907-13722661del spanning exons 71–72 was identifed by NGS-based CNV analysis.Patient 2(F2:IV-4),a 37-year-old man,and his eldest brother Patient 3(F2:IV-2)came from a consanguineous family-II.Both had sinusitis,bronchiectasis and situs inversus totalis.The respiratory cilia of Patient 2 and Patient 3 were found to be uniformly immotile,with ODA defects.Two novel homozygous deletions chr5:13720087_13733030delinsGTTTTC and chr5:13649539_13707643del,spanning exons 69–71 and exons 77–79 were identifed by NGS-based CNV analysis.Abnormalities in DNA copy number were confrmed by qPCR amplifcation.IF showed that the respiratory cilia of Patient 1 and Patient 2 were defcient in dynein axonemal heavy chain 5(DNAH5)protein expression.This report identifed three novel DNAH5 disease-associated variants by WES-based CNV analysis.Our study expands the genetic spectrum of PCD with DNAH5 in the Chinese population.

H∞ Robustness for Distributed Control in Autonomous Microgrids Considering Cyber Disturbances

The physical connections and logical relationships between microgrids and communication networks allow microgrids to develop into typical cyber-physical systems(CPSs).With the extensive use of open communication mechanisms,the impact of cyber disturbances in public communication networks cannot be diminshed.In this paper,a parameter optimal method for a distributed secondary controller based on the robust control theory and consensus algorithm is presented to enhance the robustness of a secondary control system under data disturbance,parameter perturbation,and time delay.First,a distributed secondary control strategy of microgrids is demonstrated that coordinates frequency and voltage restoration and power sharing.Then,considering the impact of cyber events on the secondary control,a distributed robust controller gain design method is proposed to satisfy the H∞ performance index.The solution of the distributed robust control is transformed into a linear matrix in equation problem and latency margin is simultaneously obtained.Finally,a test microgrid CPS is simulated with and without time delay to investigate the impact of cyber events on system operational states and the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.
