Genetically predicted fatty liver disease and risk of psychiatric disorders: A mendelian randomization study

BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and alcohol-related liver disease(Ar-LD)constitute the primary forms of chronic liver disease,and their incidence is progressively increasing with changes in lifestyle habits.Earlier studies have do-cumented a correlation between the occurrence and development of prevalent mental disorders and fatty liver.AIM To investigate the correlation between fatty liver and mental disorders,thus ne-cessitating the implementation of a mendelian randomization(MR)study to elu-cidate this association.METHODS Data on NAFLD and ArLD were retrieved from the genome-wide association studies catalog,while information on mental disorders,including Alzheimer's disease,schizophrenia,anxiety disorder,attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD),bipolar disorder,major depressive disorder,multiple personality dis-order,obsessive-compulsive disorder(OCD),post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD),and schizophrenia was acquired from the psychiatric genomics consor-tium.A two-sample MR method was applied to investigate mediators in signifi-cant associations.RESULTS After excluding weak instrumental variables,a causal relationship was identified between fatty liver disease and the occurrence and development of some psychia-tric disorders.Specifically,the findings indicated that ArLD was associated with a significantly elevated risk of developing ADHD(OR:5.81,95%CI:5.59-6.03,P<0.01),bipolar disorder(OR:5.73,95%CI:5.42-6.05,P=0.03),OCD(OR:6.42,95%CI:5.60-7.36,P<0.01),and PTSD(OR:5.66,95%CI:5.33-6.01,P<0.01).Meanwhile,NAFLD significantly increased the risk of developing bipolar disorder(OR:55.08,95%CI:3.59-845.51,P<0.01),OCD(OR:61.50,95%CI:6.69-565.45,P<0.01),and PTSD(OR:52.09,95%CI:4.24-639.32,P<0.01).CONCLUSION Associations were found between genetic predisposition to fatty liver disease and an increased risk of a broad range of psychiatric disorders,namely bipolar disorder,OCD,and PTSD,highlighting the significance of preven-tive measures against psychiatric disorders in patients with fatty liver

The stochastic switching SIR epidemic model with saturated incidence and limited medical treatment is investigated in this paper.By using Lyapunov methods and Ito formula,we first prove that the system has a unique global positive solution with any positive initial value.Then combining inequality technique and the ergodic property of Markov switching,the suficient conditions for extinction and persistence in the mean of the disease are established.The results demonstrate that increasing medical resources and improving supply efficiency can accelerate the transition from the persistent state to the extinct state.Meanwhile,the high incidence rate will slow down the extinction of the disease.Specially,the switching noise can induce the system to toggle between the extinct and persistent states.Finally,some numerical simulations are carried out to confirm the analytical results.

In the quantum Monte Carlo(QMC)method,the pseudo-random number generator(PRNG)plays a crucial role in determining the computation time.However,the hidden structure of the PRNG may lead to serious issues such as the breakdown of the Markov process.Here,we systematically analyze the performance of different PRNGs on the widely used QMC method known as the stochastic series expansion(SSE)algorithm.To quantitatively compare them,we introduce a quantity called QMC efficiency that can effectively reflect the efficiency of the algorithms.After testing several representative observables of the Heisenberg model in one and two dimensions,we recommend the linear congruential generator as the best choice of PRNG.Our work not only helps improve the performance of the SSE method but also sheds light on the other Markov-chain-based numerical algorithms.

This study investigated the formation mechanism of new grains due to twin–twin intersections in a coarse-grained Mg–6Al–3Sn–2Zn alloy during different strain rates of an isothermal compression.The results of electron backscattered diffraction investigations showed that the activated twins were primarily{1012}tension twins,and 60°boundaries formed due to twin–twin intersections under different strain rates.Isolated twin variants with 60°boundaries transformed into new grains through lattice rotations at a low strain rate(0.01 s^(−1)).At a high strain rate(10 s^(−1)),the regions surrounded by subgrain boundaries through high-density dislocation arrangement and the 60°boundaries transformed into new grains via dynamic recrystallization.

AIM:To compare the effectiveness of network-based perception learning(NBPL) and traditional training in the treatment of amblyopia children.METHODS:This randomized controlled clinical trial recruited 56 participants aged 4-12 y with anisometropic and/or strabismic amblyopia. Participants were randomly divided into two groups:the NBPL group(n=28) who received patching and NBPL for 3 mo, and the control group(n=28) who got 3 mo of patching and traditional training. Best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA) in the amblyopic eye and stereoacuity were measured and compared at baseline, 1, 2, and 3 mo post-randomization.RESULTS:There were no significant differences in age, gender ratio, and BCVA between the two groups at baseline. At 3 mo, most patients gained lines(2 log MAR lines on average) of BCVA in both groups except one 11-year-old girl in the control group(P<0.05). But no significant difference in BCVA improvement of the amblyopic eye between the two groups was found(P=0.725), and amblyopia resolved(BCVA of 0.1 log MAR or better or within 1 log MAR line of the fellow eye) for 13(46.4%) participants in both groups. The number of patients with improvement of stereoacuity was 25 and 13 in the NBPL group and control group(P=0.041), respectively, and a significant difference exists in the distribution of stereopsis at 3 mo between the two groups(P=0.015). Besides, in patients with measurable stereopsis improvement degree and space for improvement in the two groups, the NBPL group also achieved better stereoscopic improvement than the control group(10/11 vs 4/11, P<0.05).CONCLUSION:The NBPL system has a significant effect on the improvement of BCVA and stereoacuity of amblyopia children and is better than traditional training in terms of stereoacuity improvement. Perceptual learning visual training may play a more important role in the treatment of amblyopia in the future.

Control of epileptic activities in a cortex network of multiple coupled neural populations under electromagnetic induction

Epilepsy is believed to be associated with the abnormal synchronous neuronal activity in the brain,which results from large groups or circuits of neurons.In this paper,we choose to focus on the temporal lobe epilepsy,and establish a cortex network of multiple coupled neural populations to explore the epileptic activities under electromagnetic induction.We demonstrate that the epileptic activities can be controlled and modulated by electromagnetic induction and coupling among regions.In certain regions,these two types of control are observed to show exactly reverse effects.The results show that the strong electromagnetic induction is conducive to eliminating the epileptic seizures.The coupling among regions has a conduction effect that the previous normal background activity of the region gives way to the epileptic discharge,owing to coupling with spike wave discharge regions.Overall,these results highlight the role of electromagnetic induction and coupling among the regions in controlling and modulating epileptic activities,and might provide novel insights into the treatments of epilepsy.

To clarify the work hardening discrepancy effect on the strengthening of laminated metals,we designed two laminated Cu/Cu4Zn and Cu/Cu32Zn samples with different layer thicknesses.Cu/Cu4Zn has larger work hardening discrepancy between two constituent layers relative to Cu/Cu32Zn,but the yield strengths of two Cu Zn constituents are comparable.Uniaxial tensile results suggest Cu/Cu4Zn with larger work hardening discrepancy exhibits a significant strengthening at early deformation stage while Cu/Cu32Zn possesses a better ductility.The underlying mechanisms for the strengthening effect are attributed to more geometrically necessary dislocations accumulated at interfaces and severer strain localization due to the larger work hardening discrepancy.

A Dynamic Resource Allocation Strategy with Reinforcement Learning for Multimodal Multi-objective Optimization

Many isolation approaches, such as zoning search, have been proposed to preserve the diversity in the decision space of multimodal multi-objective optimization(MMO). However, these approaches allocate the same computing resources for subspaces with different difficulties and evolution states. In order to solve this issue, this paper proposes a dynamic resource allocation strategy(DRAS)with reinforcement learning for multimodal multi-objective optimization problems(MMOPs). In DRAS, relative contribution and improvement are utilized to define the aptitude of subspaces, which can capture the potentials of subspaces accurately. Moreover, the reinforcement learning method is used to dynamically allocate computing resources for each subspace. In addition, the proposed DRAS is applied to zoning searches. Experimental results demonstrate that DRAS can effectively assist zoning search in finding more and better distributed equivalent Pareto optimal solutions in the decision space.

BACKGROUND:To analyze early changes in white blood cells(WBCs),C-reactive protein(CRP)and procalcitonin(PCT)in children with multiple trauma,before secondary inflammation develops.METHODS:This single-center retrospective study collected data from patients with blunt traumatic injury admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit(PICU).According to the prognostic outcome of 28 d after admission to the PICU,patients were divided into survival group(n=141)and non-survival group(n=36).Characteristics between the two groups were compared.Receiver operation characteristic(ROC)curve analysis was conducted to evaluate the capacity of different biomarkers as predictors of mortality.RESULTS:The percentages of children with elevated WBC,CRP,and PCT levels were 81.36%,31.07%,and 95.48%,respectively.Patients in the non-survival group presented a statistically significantly higher injury severity score(ISS)than those in the survival group:37.17±16.11 vs.22.23±11.24(t=6.47,P<0.01).WBCs were also higher in non-survival group than in the survival group([18.70±8.42]×109/L vs.[15.89±6.98]×109/L,t=2.065,P=0.040).There was no significant difference between the survival and non-survival groups in PCT or CRP.The areas under the ROC curves of PCT,WBC and ISS for predicting 28-day mortality were 0.548(P=0.376),0.607(P=0.047)and 0.799(P<0.01),respectively.CONCLUSIONS:Secondary to multiple trauma,PCT levels increased in more patients,even if their WBC and CRP levels remained unchanged.However,early rising WBC and ISS were superior to PCT at predicting the mortality of multiple trauma patients in the PICU.
