Domestic hot water(DHW)systems contribute significantly to the building sector’s energy consumption and carbon emissions,making innovative optimization methods crucial for enhancing DHW energy efficiency.Existing DHW system optimizations focus on design parameters and operation modes,but their applicability is limited to specific systems and configurations,overlooking more efficient alternatives.To overcome this problem,combining visualized graphic and algebraic techniques,this study introduces a novel bi-level expanded Process Graph optimization method(BEPGOM)to optimize a DHW system with diverse component-candidates.BEPGOM effectively identifies nontrivial configurations,substantially improving economic and environmental benefits,and enhances solvability with a 98%reduction in solution space.The optimal configuration,consisting of solar heating,PCM tank,and natural gas water heater,reduces the expenditures by 18%and equivalent CO_(2) emission by 34%compared to the existing base case,greatly exceeding the traditional optimization method.Its adaptability,efficiency,and accessibility make BEPGOM a valuable tool in advancing energy system design and promoting carbon neutrality in the building sector.

The architecture of multilayer acting in colorful appearance has been widely reported.In spite of this,it is interesting that dense multilayer in epicuticle for Popillia indgigonacea Motsch elytra not only helps presenting angle dependence color-changing,but also showing higher reduced modulus(Er)and hardness(H)to protect soft abdomen below.The optical and nanomechanical properties of elytron were investigated by structural observation,optical experiments,nanoindentation and coupled bionic model simulations.The peak reflectance gradually varies from 588 nm to 510 nm with color change from orange and yellow to green when the incidence angle switches from 0°to 60°,which is attributed to the regulated variation from refractive spectra between the layers in different angle.In addition,the relatively higher Er and H of elytron epicuticle and endocuticle could play a role in resisting force with its multilayer.To identify the multifunctional characteristics of multilayer,optical and mechanical simulations were conducted based on coupled bionic models,and a strong consistence between the experiments and simulations is obtained.The multilayer could resist force with lowest strain and stress,and the structural thickness is the most necessary factors that could adjust the colors in color-changing process.

The development of highly effective metal-zeolite bifunctional catalysts for the hydroisomerization of n-alkanes is a paramount strategy to produce second-generation biofuels with high quality.In this study,polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride(PHMB)is precisely added to the initial gel to synthesize nanosized ZSM-23 zeolites(Z23-x PH).Due to orientation adsorption and steric hindrance effects of PHMB,each sample of Z23-x PH demonstrates enhanced mesoporosity in comparison with the conventional Z23-C zeolite.Furthermore,the Bronsted acid density of the Z23-x PH samples is also signifi cantly reduced due to a reduction in the distribution of framework Al at T2-T5 sites.The corresponding Pd/23-C and Pd/Z23-x PH bifunctional catalysts with 0.5 wt%Pd loading for n-hexadecane hydroisomerization are prepared by incorporating ZSM-23 zeolites as acid supports.According to the catalytic test results,the suitable addition of PHMB can effectively promote the iso-hexadecane yield.The Pd/Z23-2PH catalyst with an n_(PHMB)/n(_Si)molar ratio of 0.002 demonstrates the highest maximum iso-hexadecane yield of 74.1%at an n-hexadecane conversion of 88.3%.Therefore,the employment of PHMB has provided a simple route for the development of highly effective Pd/ZSM-23 catalysts for n-alkane hydroisomerization.

The feasibility of oral targeted drug delivery: Gut immune to particulates?

Targeted drug delivery is constantly updated with a better understanding of the physiological and pathological features of various diseases. Depending on high safety, good compliance and many other undeniable advantages, attempts have been undertaken to complete an intravenous-to-oral conversion of targeted drug delivery. However, oral delivery of particulates to systemic circulation is highly challenging due to the biochemical aggressivity and immune exclusion in the gut that restrain absorption and access to the bloodstream. Little is known about the feasibility of targeted drug delivery via oral administration(oral targeting) to a remote site beyond the gastrointestinal tract. To this end, this review proactively contributes to a special dissection on the feasibility of oral targeting. We discussed the theoretical basis of oral targeting, the biological barriers of absorption, the in vivo fate and transport mechanisms of drug vehicles, and the effect of structural evolution of vehicles on oral targeting as well. At last, a feasibility analysis on oral targeting was performed based on the integration of currently available information. The innate defense of intestinal epithelium does not allow influx of more particulates into the peripheral blood through enterocytes. Therefore, limited evidence and lacking exact quantification of systemically exposed particles fail to support much success with oral targeting. Nevertheless, the lymphatic pathway may serve as a potentially alternative portal of peroral particles into the remote target sites via M-cell uptake.

YuNet: A Tiny Millisecond-level Face Detector

Great progress has been made toward accurate face detection in recent years.However,the heavy model and expensive computation costs make it difficult to deploy many detectors on mobile and embedded devices where model size and latency are highly constrained.In this paper,we present a millisecond-level anchor-free face detector,YuNet,which is specifically designed for edge devices.There are several key contributions in improving the efficiency-accuracy trade-off.First,we analyse the influential state-of-theart face detectors in recent years and summarize the rules to reduce the size of models.Then,a lightweight face detector,YuNet,is introduced.Our detector contains a tiny and efficient feature extraction backbone and a simplified pyramid feature fusion neck.To the best of our knowledge,YuNet has the best trade-off between accuracy and speed.It has only 75856 parameters and is less than 1/5 of other small-size detectors.In addition,a training strategy is presented for the tiny face detector,and it can effectively train models with the same distribution of the training set.The proposed YuNet achieves 81.1%mAP(single-scale)on the WIDER FACE validation hard track with a high inference efficiency(Intel i7-12700K:1.6ms per frame at 320×320).Because of its unique advantages,the repository for YuNet and its predecessors has been popular at GitHub and gained more than 11K stars at https://***/ShiqiYu/libfacedetection.Keywords:Face detection,object detection,computer version,lightweight,inference efficiency,anchor-free mechanism.

Thermal battery plays an important role in renewable energy utilization towards carbon neutrality.The novel absorption thermal battery(ATB)has excellent performance but suffers from serious capacity attenuation.To address this problem,two capacity regulation methods,i.e.,variable solution flow and variable cooling water flow,are proposed to achieve a demanded discharging rate.The effects of the two regulation strategies on the dynamic discharging characteristics and overall storage performance are comparatively investigated.To demon-strate the adjustability of the output capacity,several stable discharging rates are successfully maintained by the proposed methods.To maintain a higher discharging rate,the stable discharging time has to be sacrificed.As the demanded output increased from 0.5 kW to 6.0 kW,the stable discharging time decreased from 781.8 min to 27.9 min under variable solution flow and from 769.9 min to 30.7 min under variable cooling water flow.With the increase of solution or water flow rate,the energy storage density is improved,while the energy storage efficiency is slightly increased first and decreased later.The regulation method of variable water flow shows relatively lower energy storage efficiency due to the larger pump power.This study could facilitate reasonable development and application of ATB cycles.

A review of unloading-induced fault instability

Induced seismicity associated with underground space creation and resource extraction has become a matter of global concern.However,our ability to predict and mitigate anthropogenic geohazards is still woefully inadequate.This review provides an overview of unloading-induced seismicity and highlights the mechanisms behind fault instability from a view of rock mechanics.Based on numerous fault instability cases,reduction and rotation of in situ stresses on pre-existing faults are possible causes of excavation-induced seismicity.Fault instability during resource extraction is related to many geological and operational factors,including mining depth,pore pressure,stress distribution,and production rate.Most of these cases can be explained by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion,and some exceptional cases could offer us new clues to improve the understanding of the mechanisms behind and the ability to predict and mitigate the induced seismic events.The current challenges include how to control remote triggering of fault instability and how to manage unseen threat of undetected faults.Emerging technologies,such as data analytics and machine learning,combining with physical models could be the next frontier for fault instability research.

Accurate prediction of compressive strength of rocks relies on the rate-dependent behaviors of rocks, and correlation among the geometrical, physical, and mechanical properties of rocks. However, these properties may not be easy to control in laboratory experiments, particularly in dynamic compression experiments. By training three machine learning models based on the support vector machine(SVM), backpropagation neural network(BPNN), and random forest(RF) algorithms, we isolated different input parameters, such as static compressive strength, P-wave velocity, specimen dimension, grain size, bulk density, and strain rate, to identify their importance in the strength prediction. Our results demonstrated that the RF algorithm shows a better performance than the other two algorithms. The strain rate is a key input parameter influencing the performance of these models, while the others(e.g. static compressive strength and P-wave velocity) are less important as their roles can be compensated by alternative parameters. The results also revealed that the effect of specimen dimension on the rock strength can be overshadowed at high strain rates, while the effect on the dynamic increase factor(i.e. the ratio of dynamic to static compressive strength) becomes significant. The dynamic increase factors for different specimen dimensions bifurcate when the strain rate reaches a relatively high value, a clue to improve our understanding of the transitional behaviors of rocks from low to high strain rates.
