Xi Jianying is unfortunate and fortunate at the same time. Now in her late 60s, the woman in Shandong Province, eastern China, has suffered an unknown pain in her head since young. She is fortunate in that for the past 20 years, a pharmaceutical company in Jinan, the provincial capital, has done everything it can to relieve her of the pain. Believe it or not, the Dongfeng (meaning East Wind) Pharmaceutical Factory has been producing a "miracle" medicine just for one patient, for Xi, who lives in a mountainous village on the suburbs of Tai’an City, in total disregard of the huge cost involved and the loss thus incurred.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, represented by 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), exhibit rich valley physics due to strong spin-orbit/spin-valley coupling. The most common way to probe such 2D systems is to utilize optical methods, which can monitor light emissions from various excitonic states and further help in understanding the physics behind such phenomena. Therefore, 2D TMDs with good optical quality are in great demand. Here, we report a method to directly grow epitaxial WS2 and MoS2 monolayers on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) flakes with a high yield and high optical quality; these monolayers show better intrinsic light emission features than exfoliated monolayers from natural crystals. For the first time, the valley Zeeman splitting of WS2 and MoS2 monolayers on hBN has been visualized and systematically investigated. This study paves a new way to produce high optical quality WS2 and MoS2 monolayers and to exploit their intrinsic properties in a multitude of applications.

Hexagonal boron nitride （h-BN） is believed to offer better passivation to metallic surfaces than graphene owing to its insulating nature, which facilitates blocking the flow of electrons, thereby preventing the occurrence of galvanic reactions. Nevertheless, this may not be the case when an h-BN-protected material is exposed to aqueous environments. In this work, we analyzed the stability of mono and multilayer h-BN stacks exposed to H202 and atmospheric conditions. Our experiments revealed that monolayer h-BN is as inefficient as graphene as a protective coating when exposed to H202. Multilayer h-BN offered a good degree of protection. Monolayer h-BN was found to be ineffective in an air atmosphere as well. Even a 10-15 layers-thick h-BN stack could not completely protect the surface of the metal under consideration. By combining Auger electron spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry techniques, we observed that oxygen could diffuse through the grain boundaries of the h-BN stack to reach the metallic substrate. Fortunately, because of the diffusive nature of the process, the oxidized area did not increase with time once a saturated state was reached. This makes multflayer （not monolayer） h-BN a suitable long-term oxidation barrier. Oxygen infiltration could not be observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This technique cannot assess the chemical composition of the deeper layers of a material. Hence, the previous reports, which relied on XPS to analyze the passivating properties of h-BN and graphene, may have ignored some important subsurface phenomena. The results obtained in this study provide new insights into the passivating properties of mono and multilayer h-BN in aqueous media and the degradation kinetics of h-BN-coated metals exposed to an air environment.

One-pot synthesis of N-doped petroleum coke-based microporous carbon for high-performance CO_(2) adsorption and supercapacitors

Waste resource utilization of petroleum coke is crucial for achieving global carbon emission ***,a series of N-doped microporous carbons were fabricated from petroleum coke using a one-pot synthesis *** as-prepared samples had a large specific surface area(up to 2512 m^(2)/g),a moderate-high N content(up to 4.82 at.%),and high population(55%)of ultra-micropores(<0.7 nm).Regulating the N content and ultra-microporosity led to efficient CO_(2)adsorption and *** ambient pressure,the optimal N-doped petroleum coke-based microporous carbon exhibited the highest CO_(2)uptake of 4.25 mmol/g at 25℃ and 6.57 mmol/g at 0℃.These values are comparable or even better than those of numerous previously reported adsorbents prepared by multistep synthesis,primarily due to the existence of *** sample exhibited excellent CO_(2)/N_(2)selectivity at 25℃ owing to the abundant basic pyridinic and pyrrolic N species;and showed superior CO_(2)adsorption-desorption cycling performance,which was maintained at 97% after 10 cycles at 25℃.Moreover,petroleum coke-based microporous carbon,with a considerably high specific surface area and hierarchical pore structure,exhibited excellent electrochemical performance over the N-doped sample,maintaining a favorable specific capacitance of 233.25F/g at 0.5 A/g in 6 mol/L KOH aqueous *** study provides insight into the influence of N-doping on the porous properties of petroleum coke-based ***,the as-prepared carbons were found to be promising adsorbents for CO_(2)adsorption,CO_(2)/N_(2)separation and electrochemical application.

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is the most efficient method to grow large-area two dimensional (2D) transition metal dichiacogenides (TMDCs) in high *** molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and seed-assistant are the mostly selected 2D TMDC and growth strategy for such CVD processes,*** the advantages of seed catalysts in facilitating the nucleation,achieving higher yield and better repeatability,as well as their effects on the morphologies of as-grown MoS2 have been studied,the influence of seeding promoters on both optical and electrical properties of as-grown monolayer MoS2 is not known comprehensively,which is indeed critical for understanding fundamental physics and developing practical application of such emerging 2D *** this report,we systematically investigated the effect of different seeding promoters on the properties of CVD-grown monolayer *** is found that different seed molecules lead to different impacts on the optical and electrical properties of as-grown monolayer *** three different seed catalysts (perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid tetrapotassium salt (PTAS),copper phthalocyanine (CuPc),and crystal violet (CV)),PTAS performs better in obtaining large area monolayer MoS2 with good optical quality and high electrical mobility than the other *** work gives a guide for modifying the properties of as-grown monolayer MoS2 and other 2D transition metal dichalcogenides in seeding promoters-assisted synthesis process.

Metal-free Optical Pressure Sensor with High Sensitivity and Extensive Range

Pressure monitoring of a transformer oil tank can grasp the pressure change process caused by gas production when severe internal defects occur and take timely measures to ensure the safe operation of the *** pressure sensors generally use metal encapsulation or have an air cavity structure,threatening the transformer’s insulation if it is directly used inside the *** this end,this paper proposes a method for developing a high-sensitivity,large-range,and metallizationfree optical pressure sensing device with temperature *** grating is encapsulated by fluorosilicone rubber and supplemented by an epoxy resin shielding shell on the *** the same time,a double-grating vertical arrangement is adopted to improve pressure measurement sensitivity,further avoiding the influence of temperature rise caused by a defect of the transformer on the measurement result of the *** addition,by optimizing the geometric structure of the internal sensitizing element,pre-stretching length of the fiber grating,gap distance,and other parameters,probe size can be reduced while ensuring the sensor’s *** show the proposed method can meet the requirements of sensor fabrication with different sensitivities and ranges,and to a certain extent,both high sensitivity and extensive ranges can be taken into *** sensitivity of the fabricated prototype is 15 pm/kPa,and the range is about 0.2 *** the same time,the metal-free feature of the sensor makes it suitable for use in various oil-immersed power *** records oil pressure changes caused by oil discharge breakdown,making it sensitive to small pressure changes in early failures.

Mechanically Reinforced Silkworm Silk Fiber by Hot Stretching

Silkworm silk,which is obtained from domesticated Bombyx mori(***),can be produced in a large ***,the mechanical properties of silkworm silk are inferior to its counterpart,spider dragline ***,researchers are continuously exploring approaches to reinforce silkworm ***,we report a facile and scalable hot stretching process to reinforce natural silk fibers obtained from silkworm *** results show that the obtained hot-stretched silk fibers(HSSFs)retain the chemical components of the original silk fibers while being endowed with increasedβ-sheet nanocrystal content and crystalline orientation,leading to enhanced mechanical ***,the average modulus of the HSSFs reaches 21:6±2:8 GPa,which is about twice that of pristine silkworm silk fibers(11:0±1:7 GPa).Besides,the tensile strength of the HSSFs reaches 0:77±0:13 GPa,which is also obviously higher than that of the pristine silk(0:56±0:08 GPa).The results show that the hot stretching treatment is effective and efficient for producing superstiff,strong,and tough silkworm silk *** anticipate this approach may be also effective for reinforcing other natural or artificial polymer fibers or films containing abundant hydrogen bonds.

Cable-driven legged landing gear for unmanned helicopter:Prototype design,optimization and performance assessment

Unmanned helicopters equipped with adaptive landing gear will dramatically extend their application especially in dealing with challenging *** study presents a novel cable-driven legged landing gear(CLG)with differential transmission for unmanned helicopters in complex landing *** obtain the preferred configuration of the legged mechanism,a multi-objective optimization framework for the CLG is constructed by concurrently considering terrain adaptability,landing stability and reasonable linkage of internal *** non-dominated sorting genetic algorithmⅡis employed to numerically acquire the optimal scale parameters that guide the mechanical design of the *** unmanned helicopter prototype equipped with the devised CLG is developed with key performance *** results show that the devised CLG can provide energy-efficient support over uneven terrains(totally driven torque demand less than 0.1 N m)in quasi-static landing tests,and favorable terrain adaptability(posture fluctuation of the fuselage less than±1°)in unknown slope landing *** exhibited merits give the proposed CLG the potential to enhance the landing performance of future aircraft in extreme environments.
