Surface reconstruction of Se-doped NiS_(2) enables high-efficiency oxygen evolution reaction

Surface reconstruction of electrocatalysts has been widely witnessed during the electrochemical ***,NiS_(2),NiSe_(2), and Se doped NiS_(2)(Se-NiS_(2)) are fabricated for oxygen evolution reaction(OER) through a mild sulfuration and/or selenylation process of Ni(OH)_(2) supported on carbon cloth(CC).Through careful in-situ Raman spectroscopy and ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,surface reconstruction of NiS_(2),NiSe_(2),and Se-NiS_(2) during the OER process has been revealed.A potentialdependent study shows that Se-NiS_(2) undergoes surface evolution at lower potentials and requires the lowest potential for conversion to NiOOH as a highly OER-active species,accompanied by the leaching of SO_(4)^(2-) and SeO_(4)^(2-) that can again be adsorbed on the catalyst surface to enhance the catalytic *** functional theory(DFT) calculations confirm that Se-NiS_(2) is more susceptible to surface oxidation through the OER ***,Se-NiS_(2) exhibits outstanding OER activity and stability in alkaline conditions,requiring an overpotential of 343 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm^(-2).A novel insight is provided by our work in understanding the surface reconstruction and electrocatalytic mechanism of Ni-based chalcogenides.

Sedimentary Evolution and Transgressions of the Western Subei Basin in Eastern China since the Late Pliocene

Sedimentary sequences in the Subei Basin are complex and have been affected by interactions between the ocean and rivers since the Late Pliocene, including the Yellow River, Huaihe River, and the Yangtze River. This sedimentary evolution, in particular the timing of Pleistocene transgressions, has long been a matter of controversy owing to the lack of precise chronological evidence. The aim of this study is to explore the evolution of the sedimentary environment throughout the past 3.00 Ma in this region on the basis of a comprehensive analysis of particle size and foraminifera and ostracods collected in the TZK9 core from the Subei Basin combined with geochronological studies of magnetostratigraphy, AMS^(14)C and optically stimulated luminescence(OSL). The results show that fluvial facies in the sedimentary environment from 3.00 to 1.01 Ma. There were fluvial facies and reflects six sea-level high stands from 1.01 to 0.25 Ma. The study area was affected by four large-scale transgressions since 0.25 Ma. The four marine sedimentary layers known as DU7(buried at 48–52 m), DU5(buried at 35–41 m), DU3(buried at 16–23 m), and DU1(buried at 2–4 m) are recorded in the MIS7(210–250 ka), MIS5, MIS3, and Holocene, respectively. The magnitude of the DU5 transgression was identical to that of the DU3 transgression, both were larger than the DU7 transgression, and the DU1 transgression was the weakest. The variation of transgression strength reflects the influence of global changes in sea level, tectonic subsidence, shell ridges, and sand dams. In the TZK9 core, we found evidence of seven sea-level high stands from the Early–Middle Pleistocene, and the first one caused by regional rapid subsidence and could be traced back to 0.83-0.84 Ma. Molecular Cloning and Characterization of an Allene Oxide Cyclase Gene Associated with Fiber Strength in Cotton

Allene oxide cyclase （AOC） is one of the most important enzymes in the biosynthetic pathway of the plant hormone jasmonic acid （JA）. AOC catalyzes the conversion ofallene oxide into 12-oxo-phytodienoic acid （OPDA）, a precursor of JA. Using 28K cotton genome array hybridization, an expressed sequence tag （EST; GenBank accession no. ES792958） was investigated that exhibited significant expression differences between lintless-fuzzless XinWX and linted-fuzzless XinFLM isogenic lines during fiber initiation stages. The EST was used to search the Gossypium EST database （http：//***/） for corresponding cDNA sequences encoding full-length open reading frames （ORFs）. Identified ORFs were confirmed using transcriptional and genomic data. As a result, a novel gene encoding AOC in cotton （Gossypium hirsutum AOC; GenBank accession no. KF383427） was cloned and characterized. The 741-bp GhAOC gene comprises three exons and two introns and encodes a polypeptide of 246 amino acids. Two homologous copies were identified in the tetraploid cotton species G. hirsutum acc. TM-1 and G. barbadense cv. Hai7124, and one copy in the diploid cotton species G. herbaceum and G. raimondii, qRT-PCR showed that the GhAOC transcript was abundant in cotton fiber tissues from 8 to 23 days post anthesis （DPA）, and the expression profiles were similar in the two cultivated tetraploid cotton species G. hirsutum acc. TM- 1 and G. barbadense cv. Hai7124, with a higher level of transcription in the former. One copy of GhAOC in tetraploid cotton was localized to chromosome 24 （Chr. D8） using the subgenome-specific single nucleotide polymorphism （SNP） marker analysis, which co-localized GhAOC to within 10 cM of a fiber strength quantitative trait locus （QTL） reported previously. GhAOC was highly correlated with fiber quality and strength （P=0.014） in an association analysis, suggesting a possible role in cotton fiber development, especially in secondary cell wall thickening.

Effect of probiotic treatment on cirrhotic patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy: A meta-analysis

Background: Minimal hepatic encephalopathy(MHE) is an early and reversible form of hepatic encephalopathy. The documentations on the treatment with probiotics are inconsistent. The present meta-analysis was to verify the role of probiotics in the treatment of cirrhotic patients with *** sources: Seven electronic databases were searched for relevant randomized controlled trials(RCTs)published until July 2015. The effects of probiotics on serum ammonia, endotoxin, and MHE were ***: A total of 14 RCTs(combined n = 1132) were included in the meta-analysis. When probiotics were compared to placebo or no treatment, probiotics were more likely to reduce values in the number connection test(NCT; week 4: MD =-30.25, 95% CI:-49.85 to-10.66), improve MHE(week 4: OR = 0.18,95% CI: 0.07 to 0.47; week 12: OR = 0.15, 95% CI: 0.07 to 0.32), and prevent overt HE progression(week4: OR = 0.22, 95% CI: 0.07 to 0.67) in patients with liver cirrhosis. When probiotics was compared to lactulose, probiotics tended to reduce serum ammonia levels(week 4: MD =-0.33 μmol/L, 95% CI:-5.39 to 4.74; week 8: MD = 6.22 μmol/L, 95% CI:-24.04 to 36.48), decrease NCT(week 8: MD = 3.93, 95% CI:-0.72 to 8.58), improve MHE(week 4: OR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.45 to 1.91; week 12: OR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.35 to 1.51) and prevent the development of overt HE(week 4: OR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.17 to 5.44; week 12:OR = 2.7, 95% CI: 0.50 to 14.64) in patients with liver cirrhosis. However, lactulose appears to be more effective in reducing NCT values as compared to probiotics(week 4: MD = 6.7, 95% CI: 0.58 to 12.82).Conclusion: Probiotics can decrease serum ammonia and endotoxin levels, improve MHE, and prevent overt HE development in patients with liver cirrhosis.
