An energetic nano-fiber composite based on polystyrene and 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane fabricated via electrospinning technique

Electrospinning is a simple technique used to fabricate polymeric nano-fibrous *** nano-fibers have found a wide range of valuable applications in the biomedical ***,it has not been utilized with solid high explosives ***,the electrospinning technique has been used to fabricate polystyrene(PS)/1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane(RDX)composite *** governed electrospinning parameters,voltage,distance from the collector,flow rate,mandrel rotating speed,time,and solution concentration,that greatly affect the morphology of the obtained nanofibers were *** fabricated PS/RDX nano-fibers were characterized using scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffractometer(XRD),and Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR)*** impact and friction sensitivities of PS/RDX were also *** thermal behavior of the prepared composite and the pure materials were studied by the thermal gravimetric analysis technique(TGA).SEM results proved the fabrication of PS/RDX fibers in the nano-size via *** spectroscopy confirmed the existence of the characteristic functional groups of both PS and RDX in the composite *** sharp peaks showed the conversion of amorphous PS into crystalline shape via electrospinning and also confirmed the formation of PS/RDX *** PS fibers absorbed the heat and increased the onset decomposition of the pure RDX from 181.5 to 200.7℃in the case of PS/RDX ***,PS/RDX nano-fibers showed the relatively low impact and friction sensitivities of 100 J and 360 N *** results could introduce PS/RDX nanofibrous composite in the field of explosives detection with high levels of safety.

Expansive Soil Stabilization by Bagasse Ash in Partial Replacement of Cement

This study examined the effects of using bagasse ash in replacement of ordinary Portland cement(OPC)in the treatment of expansive *** study concentrated on the compaction characteristics,volume change,compressive strength,splitting tensile strength,microstructure,California bearing ratio(CBR)value,and shear wave velocity of expansive soils treated with *** bagasse ash replacement ratios were used to create soil *** varying curing times of 7,14,and 28 days,standard compaction tests,unconfined compressive strength tests,CBR tests,Brazilian split tensile testing,and bender element(BE)tests were carried *** to X-ray diffraction(XRD)investigations,quartz and crystobalite make up the majority of the minerals in bagasse *** ash contains a variety of grain sizes,including numerous fiber-shaped particles,according to a scanning electronic microscope(SEM)*** all of the treated specimens with various replacement ratios,the overall additive content has not *** results of the Brazilian split tensile tests demonstrate improved tensile strength for all specimens with various replacement proportions.A lower maximum dry density and a greater optimal water content would result from the substitution of bagasse *** the replacement ratio is not more than 20%,the CBR values of the parts replaced specimens are even higher than the cement *** results of BE testing on the treated soils show that there is significant stiffness anisotropy but that it steadily diminishes with curing time and replacement *** to the study,bagasse ash is a useful mineral additive,and the best replacement ratio(CBA20)is 20%.

Long-term Consumption of Highland Barley Tea Promotes Healthy Aging of Skeletal Muscle

Highland barley tea (HBT) is made from roasted barley seeds and is abundant in β-glucan， amino acids， minerals， phenolics， and other natural active ingredients. These natural compounds found in whole grains have been shown to slow aging and positively affect skeletal muscle function. As a result， studying the effects of HBT on the skeletal muscle health of the elderly population is critical from a scientific and societal standpoint for improving their health status and reducing the medical burden on society. The antioxidant activity and the content of natural active substances were used as indicators to screen the optimal process of HBT brewing. The effects of long-term HBT consumption on aging in mice were investigated by using HBT as a substitute for drinking water in naturally aging mice for a 5-month intervention. Afterward， various factors were measured， such as basic physiological indices， inflammation， plasma metabolites， skeletal muscle function， and exercise capacity， to evaluate the effects of HBT on aging in mice. Long-term consumption of HBT reduced body and spleen weight， increased body weight percentage of skeletal muscle， and reduced plasma inflammation levels in aging mice. Metabolomic results showed increased plasma levels of the mitochondrial marker short-chain acylcarnitine and some amino acids. Additionally， there was a decrease in bile and long-chain acylcarnitine. The level of fibrosis in the gastrocnemius muscle of aging mice was suppressed， and the percentage of type I muscle fibers was increased， improving the endurance of the mice. Thus， long-term consumption of HBT may reduce body weight and increase skeletal muscle mitochondrial activity and exercise capacity in aging mice by reducing inflammation levels and alleviating mitochondrial damage.

In vitro inhibitory analysis of consensus siRNAs against NS3 gene of hepatitis C virus 1a genotype

Objective: To explore inhibitory effects of genome-specific, chemically synthesized siRNAs(small interference RNA) against NS3 gene of hepatitis C virus(HCV) 1a genotype in stable Huh-7(human hepatoma) cells as well as against viral replication in serum-inoculated Huh-7 cells. Methods: Stable Huh-7 cells persistently expressing NS3 gene were produced under antibiotic gentamycin(G418) selection. The cell clones resistant to 1 000 μg antibiotic concentration(G418) were picked as stable cell clones. The NS3 gene expression in stable cell clone was confirmed by RT-PCR and Western blotting. siRNA cell cytotoxicity was determined by MTT cell proliferation assay. Stable cell lines were transfected with sequence specific siRNAs and their inhibitory effects were determined by RT-PCR, real-time PCR and Western blotting. The viral replication inhibition by siRNAs in serum inoculated Huh-7 cells was determined by real-time PCR. Results: RT-PCR and Western blot analysis confirmed NS3 gene and protein expression in stable cell lines on day 10, 20 and 30 post transfection. MTT cell proliferation assay revealed that at most concentrated dose tested(50 nmol/L), siRNA had no cytotoxic effects on Huh-7 cells and cell proliferation remained unaffected. As demonstrated by the siRNA time-dependent inhibitory analysis, siRNA NS3-is44 showed maximum inhibition of NS3 gene in stable Huh-7 cell clones at 24(80%, P=0.013) and 48 h(75%, P=0.002) post transfection. The impact of siRNAs on virus replication in serum inoculated Huh-7 cells also demonstrated significant decrease in viral copy number, where siRNA NS3-is44 exhibited 70%(Pal RNA reduction as compared to NS3-is33, which showed a 64%(Pal copy number. siRNA synergism(NS3-is33 + NS3-is44) decreased viral load by 84%(Pal inhibition by each siRNA(i.e., 64%–70%(P<0.05) in serum-inoculated cells. Paroxetine Augments while Naloxone Abolishes the Analgesic Effect of Paracetamol in Acute Nociceptive Pain in Mice

The mechanism(s) of analgesic action of paracetamol (acetaminophen;N-acetyl-p-aminophenol) remains controversial. Previous studies on rats suggested that the antinociceptive action of paracetamol might involve the central descending inhibitory pain pathways recruiting both a serotoninergic and an opioidergic system. This study explores this issue in mice using paroxetine, the most potent selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor, and the nonselective opioid pure antagonist naloxone. Animals were divided into two main groups for two separate experiments, each subdivided into 3 subgroups. In both experiments;the first group served as control, the second group received paracetamol (200 mg/kg, i.p). In one experiment, the third group received paroxetine (20 mg/kg p.o for 7 days) before paracetamol. In the other experiment, animals of the third group were pretreated with naloxone (5 mg/kg, i.p) 30 min before paracetamol. The antinociceptive effect of paracetamol was tested using the hot plate test. Paracetamol displayed a significant antinociceptive activity that was augmented by pretreatment with paroxetine as was shown by maintenance of its effect beyond that shown by paracetamol alone. On the other hand, pretreatment with naloxone abolished paracetamol’s antinociceptive activity in the hot-plate test. These results extended the previous observation in rats that the antinociceptive effect of paracetamol involved activation of a central descending pain inhibitory pathway with serotonin and opioidergic peptides being potential mediators recruited.

Hemodynamics in the immediate post-transplantation period in alcoholic and viral cirrhosis

AIM:To study the hemodynamics in the immediate post transplant period and compare patients with alcoholic vs viral cirrhosis. METHODS:Between 2000-2003,38 patients were transplanted for alcoholic cirrhosis and 28 for postviral *** rate(HR),central venous pressure(CVP), mean arterial pressure(MAP),pulmonary capillary wedge pressure(PCWP),cardiac index(CI),systemic vascular resistance index(SVRI),pulmonary artery pressure(PAP),and pulmonary vascular resistance index(PVRI)were measured immediately and 24 h post transplantation. RESULTS:Hyperdynamic circulation persisted at 24 hfollowing transplantation with an elevated CI of 5.4± 1.3 L/(min×m 2 )and 4.9±1.0 L/(min×m 2 )in the viral and alcoholic groups,respectively,and was associated with a decreased *** the first 24 h, there was a significant decrease in HR and increase in MAP;the extent of the change was similar in both *** CVP,PCWP,and SVRI increased,and CI decreased in the viral patients,but not the alcoholic *** showed a lower PVRI(119±52 dynes/(cm 5 ×m 2 )vs 166±110 dynes/(cm5×m2),Pal group at 24 h. CONCLUSION:Hyperdynamic circulation persists in the immediate post-transplant period with a faster improvement in the viral *** patients have a more pronounced pulmonary vasodilatation.

Effect of Brine Discharge From al-Dur RO Desalination Plant on the Infauna Species Composition in the East Coast of Bahrain

Is High Grade Prostatic Intraepithelial Neoplasia a Risk Factor for Prostate Cancer?—A Local Study

Objective: To determine the consequence of recognizing high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) & its extent on initial sextant prostatic biopsy then identifying its associated risk of finding prostate cancer on subsequent biopsy. Patients and methods: Seventy-one men were subjected to transrectal ultrasound guided sextant prostate biopsy due to elevated serum prostate specific antigen (***) > 4 ng /ml, an abnormal digital rectal examination (DRE) and/or transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) findings. The number, percentage, as well as bilateral and multifocal involvement of specimens positive for HGPIN were recorded in every patient. The percentage of cancer detected in these patients on repeat biopsy within 1 year of the initial biopsy was also recorded. Results: The mean age and mean *** level of our patients was 59.9 years and 7.9 ng/ml respectively. Of the 71 patients studied, initial biopsy revealed that (32.4%) had benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), (36.62%) had carcinoma, (25.35%) had HGPIN and (5.63%) had chronic prostatitis. On repeat biopsy within 1 year of initial biopsy cancer of the prostate was detected in 33.3% of our patients who were diagnosed with HGPIN on 1st biopsy. all of them had multifocal involvement on the initial biopsy. Conclusion: Recognizing HGPIN on 1st biopsy (particularly multifocal involvement) is associated with great risk of prostate cancer development on subsequent biopsy, thus comprehensive follow-up of these patients is necessary.
