Metabolic diseases and their complications impose health and economic burdens *** from past experimental studies and clinical trials suggests our body may have the ability to remember the past metabolic environment,such as hyperglycemia or hyperlipidemia,thus leading to chronic inflammatory disorders and other diseases even after the elimination of these metabolic *** long-term effects of that aberrant metabolism on the body have been summarized as metabolic memory and are found to assume a crucial role in states of health and *** molecular mechanisms collectively participate in metabolic memory management,resulting in different cellular alterations as well as tissue and organ dysfunctions,culminating in disease progression and even affecting *** elucidation and expansion of the concept of metabolic memory provides more comprehensive insight into pathogenic mechanisms underlying metabolic diseases and complications and promises to be a new target in disease detection and ***,we retrace the history of relevant research on metabolic memory and summarize its salient *** provide a detailed discussion of the mechanisms by w.ich metabolic memory may be involved in disease development at molecular,cellular,and organ levels,with emphasis on the impact of epigenetic ***,we present some of the pivotal findings arguing in favor of targeting metabolic memory to develop therapeutic strategies for metabolic diseases and provide the latest reflections on the consequences of metabolic memory as well as their implications for human health and diseases.

Contents of four active components in different commercial crude drugs and preparations of Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza)

AiM: To detect the contents of four active components of Salvia miltiorrhiza in various commercially available danshen crude drugs and preparations. METHODS: Commercially available danshen crude drugs from different sources, as well as danshen pills and intravenous injection preparations containing danshen alone or in combination with other herbs were collected. The composition of these danshen samples was analyzed using HPLC. Specifically, the amounts of magnesium tanshinoate B (MTB), danshensu, isotanshinone iiA, and ctyptotanshinone were determined. in some of these samples, the content of MTB was further confirmed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer (LC-MS)/MS method. RESULTS: There were great variations in the amount of the four active ingredients in the commercially available danshen crude drugs and drug preparations in this study. Magnetic activity of the spotted dwarf AP149 in the α Persei open cluster

The simultaneous photometric and spectroscopic observations of the spotted G dwarf AP149 in the young open cluster α Persei are analyzed here. we reconstruct the observed light curves with a two-starspot model by means of a light curve modeling technique, and find that the active regions shift oppositely along longitude on a time scale of one day. Combining with the observational data obtained by other groups, we discuss the evolution of spotted regions in the photosphere, and find that its starspots evolve not only on a short time scale but also on a long time scale. The pure chromospheric emissions for Ca iiHK and Hβ lines are derived by using the spectral subtraction technique. The variation of Ca iiHK lines＇ excess emission is spatially correlated to the starspot regions. There is no clear rotational modulation for the Hβ line＇s excess emission, probably due to the contamination of prominence emission.

Pre-ischemia electro-acupuncture potentiates the expression of Bcl-2 and transforming growth factor-beta 1 in rat brains

The expression of the anti-apoptotic molecules Bcl-2 and transforming growth factor-beta 1 is known to confer protective effects on the cerebral ischemia-reperfusion *** current study investigated the expression levels of Bcl-2 and transforming growth factor-beta 1 in response to multiple pre-ischemia electro-acupuncture at acupoints Zusanli（ST36）and Fengchi（GB20） *** were divided into five groups：uninjured,control,non-acupoint,GB20 and ST36. Rats in the non-acupoint,GB20 and ST36 groups received 30 minutes（3 times or 18 times）of electro-acupuncture stimulation before experimental cerebral ischemia was ***-2 and transforming growth factor-beta 1 were found to be significantly increased in the ST36 groups with either 3 or 18 electro-acupuncture treatments（P〈0.05）.The production was higher with 18 electro-acupuncture treatments in the ST36 groups（P〈0.05）.in the GB20 groups,significant increase was only observed in transforming growth factor-beta 1 with 18 electro-acupuncture treatments（P〈0.05）.No significant elevation of the level of transforming growth factor-beta 1 was observed in the non-acupoint ***,the production of Bcl-2 increased with 18 treatments in the non-acupoint groups（P〈0.05）.The data suggest that multiple pre-ischemia electro-acupuncture at ST36 was effective in conferring neuroprotective effect on the brain by means of upregulation of Bcl-2 and transforming growth factor-beta 1 and the effect was increase with the number of treatment.

p53-independent pRB degradation contributes to a drug-induced apoptosis in AGS cells

The retinoblastoma (RB) tumor suppressor protein, pRB, plays an important role in the regulation of mammalian cell cycle. Furthermore, several lines of evidence suggest that pRB also involves in the regulation of apoptosis. in the present study, the degradation of pRB was observed in apoptotic gastric tumor cells treated with a new potent anti-tumor component, tripchlorolide (TC). The inhibition of pRB degradation by a general cysteine protease inhibitor iDAM resulted in the reduction of the apoptotic cells. Furthermore, the survival of the gastric tumor cells under the TC treatment was enhanced by an over-expression of exogenous pRB. These results suggest that the pRB degradation of the gastric tumor cells under the TC treatment involves in the apoptotic progression. in addition, the same extent of TC- induced pRB-degradation was detected in the gastric tumor cells containing a p53 dominant-negative construct, indicat- ing that this kind of pRB degradation is p53-independent.

A newly discovered active contact binary in the field of NGC 1348

we present a CCD photometry study of a newly discovered active eclipsing binary in the field of open cluster NGC 1348 based on the first time-series photometric observation. From the minimum times, we determined an orbital period of P = 0.691363 d. Among our datasets, the BV（.Ri）c light curves obtained in November 2008 were analyzed using the wilson-Devinney light curve modeling tech- nique. Because of the uncertainty of the membership of this binary in open cluster NGC 1348, we have analyzed the photometric data in two cases with different primary effective temperatures： Case A （T1 = 7750K） and Case B （T1 = 5250K）. Our anal- yses reveal that, for Case A, it is a deep （f 〉 70%）, very low mass ratio （q - 0.096） binary system, indicating that it is now.in the late evolution stage of a contact binary; w.ile for Case B, it is a red system with extraordinarily long orbital period with respect to the period-color relation for normal contact binaries, w.ich suggests that this binary has evolved off the main sequence. The well known O＇Connell effect （e.g., AB 0.03 mag） was found in the dataset obtained in November 2008, w.ich could be due to the existence of starspots on the components, therefore the corresponding spot properties （for Case A： hot spot; for Case B： dark spot） were determined using the wilson-Devinney code. with the purpose of analyzing the dark spot activity for Case B, we compared the light curves derived in different observing runs, and found that a slight change appeared from November to December, 2008, w.ich indicates the evolution of spot activity on at least one component over a time scale of about one month.

Acupuncture improves cognitive function A systematic review

BACKGROUND： Acupuncture has been used as a treatment for cognitive impairment. OBJECTiVE： This review assesses clinical evidence for or against acupuncture as a treatment for cognitive impairment. This review also discusses the proposed mechanism（s） that could link acupuncture to improved cognitive function. METHODS： we searched the literature using PolyUone search from its inception to January 2013, with full text available and language limited to English. Levels of evidence were examined using Oxford Centre for Evidence-based Medicine-Levels of Evidence （March, 2009）. RESULTS： Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria： 3 human studies and 9 animal studies. Levels of evidence ranged from level lb to level 5. CONCLUSiON： Most animal studies demonstrated a positive effect of acupuncture on cognitive impairment. However, the results of human studies were inconsistent. Further high-quality human studies with greater statistical power are needed to determine the effectiveness of acupuncture and an optimal protocol.

Stable intrinsic Long Range Antiferromagnetic Coupling in Dilutely V Doped Chalcopyrite

A stable and long-range antiferromagnetic(AFM)coupling without charge carrier mediators has been searched for a long time,but the existence of this kind of coupling is still *** on first principle calculations,we systematically study carrier free long-range AFM coupling in four transition metal chalcopyrite systems:ABTe2(A=Cu or Ag,B=Ga or in)in the dilute doping *** AFM coupling is mainly due to the p-d coupling and electron redistribution along the interacting *** relatively small energy difference between p and d orbitals,as well as between dopants and atoms in the middle of the chain can enhance the stability of longrange AFM configurations.A multi-band Hubbard model is proposed to provide fundamental understanding of long-range AFM coupling.

Self-harm attempters' perception of community services and its implication on service provision

Objective:This study aimed at exploring the attempters'perception of community social services included any barriers to seeking help and ***:The participants were patients with self-harming behavior aged 15 years or above.A set of guiding questions were designed to explore the general barriers and accessibility to community social services.A voice recording was made,w.ich was later converted into a text transcript and then preceded for content analysis with co-occurrence and similarity matrix *** males and nine females with a history of self-harm aged between 24 and 58 years were recruited for the ***:The participants had diverse experiences and backgrounds,and attitudes toward community social ***,there was a shared perception of the need to enhance community social *** were four main themes and 12 sub themes *** main theme included the service availability,service accessibility,affordability and *** details,participants were unaware of the available types of care/social services in the community,and were unaware about the nearby social *** also suggested extending service hours and focused services should be offered to help people with different backgrounds and ***,those with experience of service utilization had both positive and negative perspectives and they gave suggestions for service delivery,mainly extending service hours and offering focused services such as for gambling control and financial *** view of interaction with service providers,counseling skills and trust were highly appreciated by the ***:The results identified common circumstances of falling into financial hardship(gambling)and social fragmentation(divorce,poor family relationships,and poor marital relationships),w.ich also suggested to enhance services on center location,service arrangement,and skill of caregivers.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors in a cohort of Chinese patients in Hong Kong

AiM： To investigate the prevalence and clinical pattern of gastrointestinal stromal tumors （GiSTs） in Hong Kong Chinese, and to assess the impact of introduction of CD117 on the disease incidence. METHODS： From the database of the Department of Pathology of Yan Chai Hospital, 47 patients, with GiSTs from September 1995 to December 2003 were included in this study. Ten GiSTs were diagnosed before the introduction of CD117. The clinical features, tumor characteristics, and treatment were analyzed. Factors predicting tumor related death or recurrence were studied with Cox proportional hazard model. RESULTS： The patients included 26 males and 21 females, with a mean age of 66.6 years （SD 13.1, range 29-87 years）. The estimated prevalence of GiSTs was 13.4-15.6 per 100 000 people, with an annual inddence of 1.68-1.96 per 100 000 people. The annual incidence of GiSTs before and after the introduction of CD117 was 1.1 per 100 000 people and 2.1 per 100 000 people respectively. Stomach （34 patients, 72.3%） was the most common location for the tumor, followed by the small intestine （8 patients, 17.0%）, esophagus （2 patients, 4.3%）, omentum （2 patients, 4.3%） and colon （1 patient, 2.1%）. Thirty-one patients （66%） had complete tumor resection. Eleven out of 16 deaths （23%） were tumor-related. The median survival time was 26 too. Five-year survival rate was 61.3%. The significant factors associated with tumor-related death or recurrence were incomplete resection, tumor size 5 cm or above, invasion to the adjacent organ or presence of metastasis, CONCLUSiON： The incidence of GiST in Hong Kong is comparable to that in the United States but lower than that in Finland. The true incidence of GiSTs could be underestimated before the introduction of CD117. incomplete resection, tumor size 5 cm or above, invasion to the adjacent organ or presence of metastasis are factors predicting tumor-related death or recurrence.
