The broad objective of this research was to improve current surface mining practices and reduce negative environmental impact of overburden removal in West Virginia(WV).The specific objectives were to(i)compare conventional surface mining method(drilling,blasting,digging,and loading)to a surface miner(SM)method,and(ii)apply the analytical hierarchy process(AHP)to help select the optimal mining method based on production,cost and environmental *** design and the procedures used in this research involve five interrelated modules:(i)rock properties of overburden in WV,(ii)drilling and blasting,(iii)digging and loading,(iv)SM method,and(v)comparative analysis and selection of the optimal mining method by *** of this research indicate that application of SM method would yield higher cost of overburden removal than conventional mining methods in rocks with a high unconfined compressive strength and abrasivity.A significant advantage of SM method,where applicable,is the elimination of the negative environmental impacts associated with blasting.

Acute liver failure(ALF)is a severe and life-threatening condition in which rapid deterioration of liver function develops in a patient who has no preexisting liver *** stem cells(MSCs)are immunoregulatory stem cells which are able to modulate phenotype and function of all immune cells that play pathogenic role in the development and progression of *** in juxtacrine and paracrine manner attenuate antigen-presenting properties of dendritic cells and macrophages,reduce production of inflammatory cytokines in T lymphocytes,suppress hepatotoxicity of natural killer T(NKT)cells and promote generation and expansion of immunosuppressive T,B and NKT regulatory cells in acutely inflamed *** to their nano-sized dimension and lipid envelope,intravenously injected MSC-derived exosomes(MSC-Exos)may by-pass all biological barriers to deliver MSC-sourced immunoregulatoy factors directly into the liver-infiltrated immune cells and injured *** obtained by us and others revealed that intravenous administration of MSCs and MSC-Exos efficiently attenuated detrimental immune response and acute inflammation in the liver,suggesting that MSCs and MSC-Exos could be considered as potentially new remedies in the immunotherapy of *** this review,we emphasize the current knowledge about molecular and cellular mechanisms which are responsible for MSC-based modulation of liver-infiltrated immune cells and we discuss different insights regarding the therapeutic potential of MSCs in liver regeneration.

Study of Completed Archaeal Genomes and Proteomes:Hypothesis of Strong Mutational AT Pressure Existed in Their Common Predecessor

The number of completely sequenced archaeal genomes has been sufficient for a large-scale bioinformatic study. We have conducted analyses for each coding region from 36 archaeal genomes using the original CGS algorithm by calculating the total GC content （G＋C）, GC content in first, second and third codon positions as well as in fourfold and twofold degenerated sites from third codon positions, levels of arginine codon usage （Arg2： AGA/G; Arg4： CGX）, levels of amino acid usage and the entropy of amino acid content distribution. In archaeal genomes with strong GC pressure, arginine is coded preferably by GC-rich Arg4 codons, whereas in most of archaeal genomes with G＋C〈0.6, arginine is coded preferably by AT-rich Arg2 codons. In the genome of Haloquadratum walsbyi, which is closely related to GC-rich archaea, GC content has decreased mostly in third codon positions, while Arg4〉〉Arg2 bias still persists. Proteomes of archaeal species carry characteristic amino acid biases： levels of isoleucine and lysine are elevated, while levels of alanine, histidine, glutamine and cytosine are relatively decreased. Numerous genomic and proteomic biases observed can be explained by the hypothesis of previously existed strong mutational AT pressure in the common predecessor of all archaea.

HTTP Adaptive Streaming(HAS)of video content is becoming an undivided part of the Internet and accounts for most of today’s network *** compression technology plays a vital role in efficiently utilizing network channels,but encoding videos into multiple representations with selected encoding parameters is a significant ***,video encoding is a computationally intensive and time-consuming operation that requires high-performance resources provided by on-premise infrastructures or public *** turn,the public clouds,such as Amazon elastic compute cloud(EC2),provide hundreds of computing instances optimized for different purposes and clients’***,there is a need for algorithms and methods for optimized computing instance selection for specific tasks such as video encoding and transcoding ***,the encoding speed directly depends on the selected encoding parameters and the complexity characteristics of video *** this paper,we first benchmarked the video encoding performance of Amazon EC2 spot instances using multiple×264 codec encoding parameters and video sequences of varying ***,we proposed a novel fast approach to optimize Amazon EC2 spot instances and minimize video encoding ***,we evaluated how the optimized selection of EC2 spot instances can affect the encoding *** results show that our approach,on average,can reduce the encoding costs by at least 15.8%and up to 47.8%when compared to a random selection of EC2 spot instances.

One of the major tasks of monitoring production well operations is to determine bottom-hole flowing *** overwhelming majority of wells in the Perm Krai are serviced using borehole pumps,which makes it difficult to take direct bottom-hole flowing pressure *** bottomhole filtration pressure(BHFP)in these wells is very often determined by recalculating the parameters measured at the well mouth(annulus pressure,dynamic fluid level depth).The recalculation is done by procedures based on analytically determining the characteristics of the gas-liquid mixture in the wellbore,which is very inconsistent to perform due to the mixture's complex *** article proposes an essentially different approach to BHFP measurements that relies on the mathematical processing of the findings of more than 4000 parallel mouth and deep investigations of the oil production wells of a large oil-production *** a result,multivariate mathematical models are elaborated that allow reliably determining the BHFP of oil-production wells in operation.

Reticulated vitreous carbon （RVC） foams were manufactured by multiple replications of a polyurethane foam template structure using ethanolic solutions of phenolic resin. The aims were to create an algorithm of fine tuning the precursor foam density and ensure an open-cell reticulated porous structure in a wide density range. The precursor foams were pyrolyzed in inert atmospheres at 700℃, 1100℃and 2000℃, and RVC foams with fully open cells and tunable bulk densities within 0.09-0.42 g/cm3 were synthesized. The foams were characterized in terms of porous structure, carbon lattice parameters, mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, electric conductivity, and corrosive resistance. The reported manufacturing approach is suitable for designing the foam microstructure, including the strut design with a graded microstructure.

The search for new materials requires effective methods for scanning the space of atomic configurations,in which the number is *** we present an extensive application of a topological network model of solid-state transformations,which enables one to reduce this infinite number to a countable number of the regions corresponding to topologically different crystalline *** have used this model to successfully generate carbon allotropes starting from a very restricted set of initial structures;the generation procedure has required only three steps to scan the configuration space around the *** a result,we have obtained all known carbon structures within the specified set of restrictions and discovered 224 allotropes with lattice energy ranging in 0.16–1.76 eV atom^(−1) above diamond including a phase,which is denser and probably harder than *** have shown that this phase has a quite different topological structure compared to the hard allotropes from the diamond polytypic *** have applied the tiling approach to explore the topology of the generated phases in more detail and found that many phases possessing high hardness are built from the tiles confined by six-membered *** have computed the mechanical properties for the generated allotropes and found simple dependences between their density,bulk,and shear moduli.
