Quantifying the actual sediment load flux into Lake Baikal:A case study of the main tributary——The Selenga River(Russia)

The significant reduction of sediment load flux into Lake Baikal from its main tributary-the Selenga River began in the mid-1970 s,and can be explained by climate change and socio-economic *** analysis was done of changes in hydro-meteorological parameters(water discharge,sediment load,air temperature,and precipitation) and their tendencies over periods of 1946-1975(baseline) and1976-2017(warming).Changes in natural processes and human activity were negligible during the baseline *** the warming period,against the background of an increase in temperature,the water discharge had a slight decreasing trend(-13%) whereas the sediment load has significantly decreased(-53%) these are consist with the precipitation change(-9.4%).Analysis of hydro-climatic data using statistical methods showed that in the warming period the greatest reduction in river sediment runoff occurred in the interval *** this period the sediment load was 768 × 10～3 t/yr,which is less than the average value during the warming period-1048 × 10～3 t/*** sedimentation in the Selenga River delta,the actual sediment load flux from the Selenga River into Lake Baikal amounted to 515 × 10～3 t/yr,which is three times less than the average multiyear value 1535 × 10～3 t/yr for observation period(1946-2017).

Neuroscience and neurology research is dominated by experimentation with *** 75%of neurology disease-associated genes have orthologs in Drosophila mel-anogaster,the fruit fly amenable to complex neurological and behavioral ***,non-vertebrate models including Drosophila have so far been unable to significantly replace mice and rats in this field of *** reason for this situ-ation is the predominance of gene overexpression(and gene loss-of-function)meth-odologies used when establishing a Drosophila model of a given neurological disease,a strategy that does not recapitulate accurately enough the genetic disease condi-tions.I argue here the need for a systematic humanization approach,whereby the Drosophila orthologs of human disease genes are replaced with the human *** approach will identify the list of diseases and the underlying genes that can be adequately modeled in the fruit fly.I discuss the neurological disease genes to which this systematic humanization approach should be applied and provide an example of such an application,and consider its importance for subsequent disease modeling and drug discovery in Drosophila.I argue that this paradigm will not only advance our un-derstanding of the molecular etiology of a number of neurological disorders,but will also gradually enable researchers to reduce experimentation using rodent models of multiple neurological diseases and eventually replace these models.

High-temperature annealing of(201)β-Ga_(2)O_(3) substrates for reducing structural defects after diamond sawing

A commercial epi-ready(201)β-Ga_(2)O_(3) wafer was investigated upon diamond sawing into pieces measuring 2.5×3 mm^(2).The defect structure and crystallinity in the cut samples has been studied by X-ray diffraction and a selective wet etching *** density of defects was estimated from the average value of etch pits calculated,including near-edge regions,and was obtained close to 109 cm^(-2).Blocks with lattice orientation deviated by angles of 1-3 arcmin,as well as non-stoichiometric fractions with a relative strain about(1.0-1.5)×10^(-4)in the[201]direction,were *** perfection was shown to decrease significantly towards the cutting lines of the *** reduce the number of structural defects and increase the crystal perfection of the samples via increasing defect motion mobility,the thermal annealing was *** and formation of a mosaic structure coupled with dislocation wall appearance upon 3 h of annealing at 1100℃ was *** fractions characterized by non-stoichiometry phases and the block deviation *** annealing for 11 h improved the homogeneity and perfection in the *** average density of the etch pits dropped down significantly to 8×10^(6) cm^(-2).

The development of structural materials resistant to harsh radiation environments requires an in-depth understanding of the early stage of the aging *** radiation environments with high transmutation helium production rates such as in fusion and spallation applications,even materials with otherwise acceptable radiation stability may suffer from radiation embrittlement related to helium bubble *** theoretical modeling of helium-assisted cavity nucleation in pure metals and simple alloys provides some useful guidelines at the atomic scale level,these,however,do not overlap with the size resolution of available experimental *** this study,we employed slow positron beam spectroscopy to characterize the nucleation and growth of nano-scale helium bubbles in martensitic steels strengthened by thermodynamically stable nano-oxide *** combination with transmission electron microscopy,we experimentally characterized the evolution of helium bubbles from small clusters of radiation-induced vacancies to large cavities well resolvable by *** radiation resistance of oxide-dispersion strengthened steels dominates only in the early stages of bubble evolution,where positron lifetime measurements provide a missing piece of the microstructural puzzle conventionally constructed by TEM.
