One of the key challenges in the total maximum daily load(TMDl)development process is how to define the critical condition for a receiving *** main concern in using a continuous simulation approach is the absence of any guarantee that the most critical condition will be captured during the selected representative hydrologic period,given the scarcity of long-term continuous *** objectives of this paper are to clearly address the critical condition in the TMDl development process and to compare continuous and event-based approaches in defining critical condition during TMDl development for a waterbody impacted by both point and nonpoint source pollution.A practical,event-based critical flow-storm(CFS)approach was developed to explicitly addresses the critical condition as a combination of a low stream flow and a storm event of a selected magnitude,both having certain frequencies of *** paper illustrated the CFS concept and provided its theoretical basis using a derived analytical conceptual *** CFS approach clearly defined a critical condition,obtained reasonable results and could be considered as an alternative method in TMDl development.

Adding Value to Crop Production Systems by Integrating Forage Cover Crop Grazing

In addition to their value as cereal grains, wheat (Triticum aestivum l.) and triticale (× Triticosecale Wittmack) are important cool-season annual forages and cover crops. Yearling steer (Bos taurus) performance was compared in the spring following autumn establishment as for age cover crops after soybean [Glycine max (l.) Merr.] grain harvest. Replicated pastures (0.4 ha) were no-till seeded in three consecutive years into soybean stubble in autumn, fertilized, and grazed the following spring near Ithaca, NE, USA. Each pasture (n = 3) was continuously stocked in spring with four yearling steers (380 ± 38 kg) for 17, 32, and 28 d in 2005, 2006, and 2007, respectively. In 2005, average daily gain (ADG) for steers grazing triticale exceeded the ADG for wheat by 0.31 kghd-1d-1. In 2006, wheat ADG exceeded that for triticale by 0.12 kghd-1d-1. In 2007, steers grazing wheat lost weight, while steers grazing triticale gained 0.20 kghd-1d-1. Based on the 3-year average animal gains valued at $1.32 kg-1, mean net return ($ ha-1 yr-1) was $62.15 for triticale and $22.55 for wheat. Since these grazed cover crops provide ecosystem services in addition to forage, grazing could be viewed as a mechanism for recovering costs and adds additional value to the system. Based on this 3-year grazing trial, triticale was superior to wheat and likely will provide the most stable beef yearling performance across years with variable weather for the western Cornbelt USA.

Responses of early-successional songbirds to a two-stage shelterwood harvest for oak forest regeneration

Background: The early stage of forest succession following disturbance is characterized by a shift in songbird composition as well as increased avian richness due to increased herbaceous growth in the forest understory. However, regeneration of woody species eventually outcompetes the herbaceous understory, subsequently shifting vegetation communities and decreasing availability of vital foraging and nesting cover for disturbance-dependent birds, ultimately resulting in their displacement. These early stages following forest disturbance, which are declining throughout the eastern United States, are ephemeral in nature and birds depend on such disturbances for nesting and other purposes throughout their ***: We investigated the use of a two-stage shelterwood method to manage long-term persistence of seven early successional songbirds over a 13-year period in an upland hardwood forest within the southern end of the midCumberland Plateau in the eastern United ***: Canopy and midstory gaps created after initial harvest were quickly exploited by tree growth and canopy cover returned to these areas, accelerating the displacement of early-successional species. Woody stem densities increased substantially following stage two harvest as advanced tree regeneration combined with the re-opening of the overstory layer increased resource competition for early-successional plants in the understory. Carolina Wren(Thryothorus ludovicianus), Eastern Towhee(Pipilo erythrophthalmus), Indigo Bunting(Passerina cyanea), and Yellowbreasted Chat(Icteria virens) were characterized by immediate increases following initial harvest in 2001; while the American Goldfinch(Spinus tristis), Prairie Warbler(Setophaga discolor), and White-eyed Vireo(Vireo griseus) did not show an immediate response. AIM To investigate any changing trends in the etiologies of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) in Argentina during the last years. METHODS A longitudinal cohort study was conducted by 14 regional hospitals starting in 2009 through 2016. All adult patients with newly diagnosed HCC either with pathology or imaging criteria were included. Patients were classified as presenting non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFlD) either by histology or clinically, provided that all other etiologies of liver disease were ruled out, fatty liver was present on abdominal ultrasound and alcohol consumption was excluded. Complete follow-up was assessed in all included subjects since the date of HCC diagnosis until death or last medical *** A total of 708 consecutive adults with HCC were included. Six out of 14 hospitals were liver transplant centers(n = 484). The prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 27.7%. Overall, HCV was the main cause of liver disease related with HCC(37%) including cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients, followed by alcoholic liver disease 20.8%, NAFlD 11.4%, cryptogenic 9.6%, HBV 5.4% infection, cholestatic disease and autoimmune hepatitis 2.2%, and other causes 9.9%. A 6-fold increase in the percentage corresponding to NAFlDHCC was detected when the starting year, i.e., 2009 was compared to the last one, i.e., 2015(4.3% vs 25.6%; P ly, a higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus was present in NAFlD-HCC group 61.7% when compared to other than NAFlD-HCC 23.3%(P lower median AFP values at HCC diagnosis were observed between NAFlD-HCC and non-NAFlD groups(6.6 ng/m l vs 26 ng/m l; P = 0.02). 将小波神经网络优良的分类诊断能力和最小二乘加权融合方法相结合,采用油气分析实现电力变压器的故障诊断.用非线性Morlet小波基作为神经网络激励函数,形成神经元,结合双方的优点,建立了紧致型小波神经网络.采用6个同一小波,其隐层单元数目、学习率等相关训练参数不同的单个子网络,对相同变压器故障信号样本进行训练,用最小二乘加权融合法对各个子网络的输出结果进行决策信息融合,通过对融合结果的分析,得到变压器故障的识别结果.测试结果表明,系统具有较好的分类诊断能力和可靠性.

Geographic variation in larval cold tolerance and exposure across the invasion front of a widely established forest insect

Under global climate change,high and low temperature extremes can drive shifts in species *** the range of a species,thermal tolerance is based on acclimatization,plasticity,and may undergo selection,shaping resilience to temperature *** this study,we measured variation in cold temperature tolerance of early instar larvae of an invasive forest insect,lymantria dispar dispar l.(lepidoptera:Erebidae),using populations sourced from a range of climates within the current introduced range in the Eastern United *** tested for population differences in chill coma recovery(CCR)by measuring recovery time following a period of exposure to a nonlethal cold temperature in 2 cold exposure experiments.A 3rd experiment quantified growth responses after CCR to evaluate sublethal *** results indicate that cold tolerance is linked to regional climate,with individuals from populations sourced from colder climates recovering faster from chill *** this geographic gradient is seen in many species,detecting this pattern is notable for an introduced species founded from a single point-source *** demonstrate that the cold temperatures used in our experiments occur in nature during cold spells after spring egg hatch,but impacts to growth and survival appear *** expect that population differences in cold temperature performance manifest more from differences in temperature-dependent growth than acute *** intraspecific variation in cold tolerance increases our understanding of the role of climatic gradients on the physiology of an invasive species,and contributes to tools for predicting further expansion.
