Examining data visualization pitfalls in scientific publications

Data visualization blends art and science to convey stories from data via graphical *** different problems,applications,requirements,and design goals,it is challenging to combine these two components at their full *** the art component involves creating visually appealing and easily interpreted graphics for users,the science component requires accurate representations of a large amount of input *** a lack of the science component,visualization cannot serve its role of creating correct representations of the actual data,thus leading to wrong perception,interpretation,and *** might be even worse if incorrect visual representations were intentionally produced to deceive the *** address common pitfalls in graphical representations,this paper focuses on identifying and understanding the root causes of misinformation in graphical *** reviewed the misleading data visualization examples in the scientific publications collected from indexing databases and then projected them onto the fundamental units of visual communication such as color,shape,size,and spatial ***,a text mining technique was applied to extract practical insights from common visualization ***’s Q test and McNemar’s test were conducted to examine if there is any difference in the proportions of common errors among color,shape,size,and spatial *** findings showed that the pie chart is the most misused graphical representation,and size is the most critical *** was also observed that there were statistically significant differences in the proportion of errors among color,shape,size,and spatial orientation.

Examination of n-t_(9) conditions required by N=50,82,126 waiting points in r-process

We examined the conditions of neutron density(n) and temperature(t9) required for the N = 50, 82,and 126 isotopes to be waiting points(WP) in the r-process. the nuclear mass based on experimental data presented in the AME2020 database(AME and AME ± Δ) and that predicted using FRDM,WS4, DZ10, and KtUY models were employed in our estimations. We found that the conditions required by the N = 50 WP significantly overlap with those required by the N = 82 ones, except for the WS4 model. In addition, the upper(or lower) bounds of the n-t9 conditions based on the models are different from each other due to the deviations in the two-neutron separation *** standard deviations in the nuclear mass of 108 isotopes in the three N = 50, 82, and 126 groups are about rms = 0.192 and 0.434 Me V for the pairs of KtUY-AME and WS4-KtUY models,respectively. We found that these mass uncertainties result in a large discrepancy in the nn-t_(9) conditions, leading to significant differences in the conditions for simultaneously appearing all the three peaks in the r-process abundance. the newly updated FRDM and WS4 calculations can give the overall conditions for the appearance of all the peaks but vice versa for their old versions in a previous study. the change in the final r-process isotopic abundance due to the mass uncertainty is from a few factors to three orders of magnitude. therefore, accurate nuclear masses of the r-process key nuclei, especially for 76 Fe,81Cu,127Rh,132Cd,192Dy, and 197tm, are highly recommended to be measured in radioactive-ion beam facilities for a better understanding of the r-process evolution.

Bubble entrapment during the recoil of an impacting droplet

When a droplet impacts a(super-)hydrophobic surface,there is a range of Weber numbers within which bubble entrapment will occur during droplet recoil due to closure of the air cavity developed when the droplet spreads out during the *** this study,we studied bubble entrapment using a microelectromechanical system(MEMS)-based acoustic sensor fabricated on a *** found that bubble entrapment is followed by an acoustic vibration that can be detected by the ***,the frequency of the vibration is inversely proportional to the radius of the droplet,which indicates that this vibration is the resonant oscillation of the ***,the MEMS-based acoustic sensor can be used not only to detect but also to measure the size of the entrapped ***,we demonstrated that it is possible to prevent bubble formation by allowing the air to escape to the underside of the droplet contact *** can be done by creating through-holes on the substrate or decorating the substrate with sufficiently large textures.

Constitutive modeling of ultra?fine?grained titanium flow stress for machining temperature prediction

this work investigates the machining temperatures of ultra-fine-grained titanium(UFG ti),prepared by equal channel angular extrusion,through analytical *** ti has great usefulness in biomedical applications because of its high mechanical strength,sufficient manufacturability,and high *** temperatures were predicted using a physics-based predictive model based on material constitutive relation and mechanics of the orthogonal cutting *** minimization between the stress calculated using Johnson–Cook constitutive model and the same stress calculated using mechanics model yields the estimation of machining temperatures at two deformation *** agreements are observed upon validation to the values reported in the *** machinability of UFG ti is investigated by comparing its machining temperature to that of ti–6Al–4V alloy under the same cutting *** lower temperatures are observed in machining UFG *** computational efficiency of the presented model is investigated by comparing its average computational time(~0.5 s)to that of a widely used modified chip formation model(8900 s)with comparable prediction *** work extends the applicability of the presented temperature model to a broader class of materials,specifically ultra-fine-grained *** high computational efficiency allows the in situ temperature prediction and optimization of temperature condition with process parameters planning.

Biodiesels produced from various feedstocks have been considered as alternative fuels used in internal combustion engines without major *** research focuses on producing biodiesel from waste cooking oil(WCOSD)by the catalytic cracking method using MgO as the catalyst and comparing the engine operating characteristics of the test engine when using WCOSD and traditional diesel(CD)as test *** a result,the brake power of the test engine fueled WCOSD,and traditional diesel is ***,the engine fuel consumption in the case of using WCOSD is slight increases in some operating ***,the nitrogen oxides emissions of the test engine fueled WCOSD are higher than those of CD at all tested *** trend is opposite for hydrocarbon emission as the HC emission of the engine fueled by WCOSD reduces 26.3%on *** smoke emission of the test engine in case of using WCOSD is lower 17%on average than that of ***,the carbon monoxide emissions are lower at the low and medium loads and higher at the full *** results show that the new biodiesel has the same characteristics as those of commercial biodiesel and can be used as fuel for diesel engines.

theoretical basis of a beneficial role for vitamin D in viral hepatitis

Abnormal bone metabolism and dysfunction of the calcium-parathyroid hormone-vitamin D axis have been reported in patients with viral hepatitis. Some studies suggested a relationship between vitamin D and viral hepatitis. Genetic studies have provided an opportunity to identify the proteins that link vitamin D to the pathology of viral hepatitis (i.e., the major histocompatibility complex class Ⅱ molecules, the vitamin D receptor, cytochrome P 450 , the renin-angiotensin system, apolipoprotein E, liver X receptor, toll-like receptor, and the proteins regulated by the Sp1 promoter gene). Vitamin D also exerts its effects on viral hepatitis via non-genomic factors, i.e., matrix metalloproteinase, endothelial vascular growth factor, prostaglandins, cyclooxygenase-2, and oxidative stress. In conclusion, vitamin D could have a beneficial role in viral hepatitis. Calcitriol is best used for viral hepatitis because it is the active form of the vitamin D 3 metabolite.

Adaptive data fusion framework for modeling of non-uniform aerodynamic data

Multi-fidelity Data Fusion(MDF)frameworks have emerged as a prominent approach to producing economical but accurate surrogate models for aerodynamic data modeling by integrating data with different fidelity ***,most existing MDF frameworks assume a uniform data structure between sampling data sources;thus,producing an accurate solution at the required level,for cases of non-uniform data structures is *** address this challenge,an Adaptive Multi-fidelity Data Fusion(AMDF)framework is proposed to produce a composite surrogate model which can efficiently model multi-fidelity data featuring non-uniform ***,the design space of the input data with non-uniform data structures is decomposed into subdomains containing simplified ***,different MDF frameworks and a rule-based selection process are adopted to construct multiple local models for the subdomain *** the other hand,the Enhanced Local Fidelity Modeling(ELFM)method is proposed to combine the generated local models into a unique and continuous global ***,the resulting model inherits the features of local models and approximates a complete database for the whole design *** validation of the proposed framework is performed to demonstrate its approximation capabilities in(A)four multi-dimensional analytical problems and(B)a practical engineering case study of constructing an F16C fighter aircraft’s aerodynamic *** comparisons of the generated models using the proposed AMDF framework and conventional MDF approaches using a single global modeling algorithm are performed to reveal the adaptability of the proposed approach for fusing multi-fidelity data featuring non-uniform ***,the results indicated that the proposed framework outperforms the state-of-the-art MDF approach in the cases of non-uniform data.

In this paper,by combining the inertial technique and the gradient descent method with Polyak's stepsizes,we propose a novel inertial self-adaptive gradient algorithm to solve the split feasi-bility problem in Hilbert spaces and prove some strong and weak convergence theorems of our method under standard *** examine the performance of our method on the sparse recovery prob-lem beside an example in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space with synthetic data and give some numerical results to show the potential applicability of the proposed method and comparisons with related methods emphasize it further.
