Get.ing t.e Most.Out.of Every t.aining Day: t.e Influence of Inst.uct.rs on Self-Regulat.d Learning During Firefight.r Leadership Courses

Leadership courses in t.e fire services are highly challenging, and t.ey can seriously exhaust.t.ainees and hamper t.eir selfregulat.d learning effort.(for example, set.ing goals, focusing at.ent.on, seeking feedback). We t.eorize t.at.experiences of failure or overload can curt.il t.ainees' available energy resources on subsequent.t.aining days, which, in t.rn, should affect.t.ainees' learning effort.. Given inst.uct.rs' cent.al role in leadership courses, we hypot.esize t.at.support.ve and humble inst.uct.r behaviors decrease experiences of failure and overload and, t.us, increase self-regulat.d learning. Moreover, we argue t.at.support.ve inst.uct.r behavior may amplify t.e posit.ve effect. of high energy resources, while humble behavior may alleviat. t.e negat.ve impact.of low resource levels. We t.st.d preregist.red hypot.eses wit. 118 firefight.rs part.cipat.ng in t.o-week leadership courses at.a German fire academy. t.e part.cipant. complet.d short.web-based quest.onnaires before and aft.r classes each day. Mult.level analyses confirmed t.at.perceived daily support.ve and humble inst.uct.r behavior predict.d t.ainees' report. of daily self-regulat.d learning act.vit.. Not.bly, t.is effect.was independent.from posit.ve effect. of t.ainees' report.d energy resources in t.e morning. Support.ve and humble behavior did not.moderat. t.e eff ect.of energy resources. Our findings suggest.t.at.inst.uct.rs play a crucial role in facilit.t.ng effect.ve learning under challenging t.aining condit.ons. Furt.ermore, we offer implicat.ons for leaders in fire services, who oft.n conduct.t.ainings wit. t.eir subordinat.s.

Burkina Faso, which is undergoing rapid urbanizat.on, faces major nat.ral t.reat., part.cularly flooding, as demonst.at.d by t.e severe floods of 2009 t.at.caused loss of life, injury, st.uct.ral damage and economic losses in Ouagadougou. t.e aim of t.is research is t. develop a web map highlight.ng t.e municipalit.’s flood-prone areas, wit. a view t. informing and raising awareness of flood risk reduct.on. Using t.e Leaflet.JavaScript.mapping library, t.e st.dy uses Ht.L, CSS and JavaScript.t. implement.web mapping t.chnology. Dat. on Ouagadougou’s flood zones is generat.d by a mult.-crit.ria analysis combining Saat.’s AHP met.od and GIS in QGIS, int.grat.ng seven (7) paramet.rs including hydrography, alt.t.de, slope, rainfall, soil t.pes, land use and soil moist.re index. QGIS processes and maps t.e t.emes, Post.reSQL wit. Post.IS serves as t.e DBMS and GeoServer funct.ons as t.e map server. t.e Web GIS plat.orm allows users t. visualize t.e different.flood risks, from very low t. very high, or t.e high-risk areas specific t. Ouagadougou. t.e AHP calculat.ons classify t.e municipalit. int. five flood vulnerabilit. zones: very low (24.48%), low (27.93%), medium (23.01%), high (17.11%) and very high (7.47%). Effect.ve risk management.requires communicat.on and awareness-raising. t.is online mapping applicat.on serves as a t.ol for communicat.on, management.and flood prevent.on in Ouagadougou, helping t. mit.gat. flood-relat.d nat.ral disast.rs.
