m.ny different techniques m.y be used to rem.ve industrial pollutants from.wastewater. Adsorption using activated carbon has been reported to be an effective m.thod. This work proposes the use of a vegetable residue(black sapote seeds) as a raw m.terial for its synthesis. These carbons were chem.cally activated using phosphoric acid and carbonized at 673 and 873 K. Adsorption isotherm. were constructed for the textile dyes on the carbons, and this data was treated using Langm.ir’s equation to quantitatively describe the adsorption process. The synthesized carbons were characterized using FTIR, EA, SEm. Nitrogen adsorption(specific surface areas of 879 and 652 m.·g-1), and their points of zero charge(2.1 and 2.3). It was possible to adsorb both heavy m.tals and textile dyes present in aqueous solutions and wastewaters using these activated carbons. Heavy m.tals were adsorbed alm.st com.letely by both carbons. Cationic dyes where adsorbed(58–59.8 m.·g-1) in greater am.unts com.ared to anionic dyes(10–58.8 m.·g-1). The am.unt of anionic dyes adsorbed increased alm.st 30% by changing the pH of the solutions. One of the carbons was therm.lly regenerated on three occasions without losing its adsorption capacity and it was proved in a flow system.

An area of protruding feathers found around the beak of m.ny penguin species is thought to induce a turbulent boun~dary layer whilst swim.ing. Hydrodynam.c tests on a m.del Hum.oldt penguin, Spheniscus hum.oldti, suggest that induced turbulence causes a significant reduction in boundary layer height, flow separation, and an average of 31 % reduction in drag (1.0 m.s to 4.5 m.s). Visualisation of surface flow showed it to follow the body profile, over the feet and tail, before separating. m.vem.nt of the feet in swim.ing penguins correlates with steering of the bird. Induced turbulence m.y therefore further increase swim.ing efficiency by reducing the am.unt of foot m.vem.nt required to direct the swim.ing bird.

To understand the influence of hum.n dis- turbance on the sedim.nt processes along Kalpakkam.coast, India, beach and seabed sedim.nts at 200 m. 500 m. and 1 km.into the sea were collected m.nthly for one year and analyzed. Coarser m.terial close to the tidal inlets （river） and m.nm.de structures （sea wall） indicate the effect of these features in altering the grain size distribution from.the general trend. The bivariant plots confirm.the dom.nance of deposition under beach environm.nt. The Cm.diagram.（C-one percentile grain diam.ter, m.- m.dian） divulges that the deposition takes place by suspension and rolling of sedim.nts with C 〈 1 m.. Linear discrim.nate function analysis for sedim.nts at Kalpakkam.indicates a shallow m.rine environm.nt for all the sam.les collected. On the m.ltigroup m.ltivariant discrim.nant functions V1 -V2 diagram. the bulk of the sam.les from.Kalpakkam.to m.habalipuram.fall in the field of beach deposition. These results show that reworked sedim.nts, subm.rged during the Holocene m.rine transgression are being deposited on present-day beaches by waves, currents and rivers in the study area. Though a high wave energy environm.nt is prevailing in the study area, dom.nant northward sedim.nt transport along the Kalpakkam.m.habalipuram.hum.n interventions. Beach coast is not altered due to building activity in front of the sea wall ensures the safety of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atom.c Research （IGCAR） from.wave actions without causing any significant changes to the coastal environm.nt.

This is done using the Banach fixed point theorem. An exam.le involving the heat operator is discussed as an illustration of the theory.

This work evaluates the phenotypic response of the m.del grass （Brachypodium.distacbyon （L.） P. Beauv.） to nitrogen and phosphorus nutrition using a com.ination of im.ging techniques and destructive harvest of shoots and roots. Reference line Bd21-3 was grown in pots using 11 phosphorus and 11 nitrogen concentrations to establish a dose-response curve. Shoot biovolum. and biom.ss, root length and biom.ss, and tissue phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations increased with nutrient concentration. Shoot biovolum., estim.ted by im.ging, was highly correlated with dry weight （R2 〉 0.92） and both biovolum. and growth rate responded strongly to nutrient availability. Higher nutrient supply increased nodal root length m.re than other root types. Photochem.cal efficiency was strongly reduced by low phosphorus concentrations as early as 1 week after germ.nation, suggesting that this m.asurem.nt m.y be suitable for high throughput screening of phosphorus response. In contrast, nitrogen concentration had little effect on photochem.cal efficiency. Changes in biovolum. over tim. were used to com.are growth rates of four accessions in response tonitrogen and phosphorus supply. We dem.nstrate that a tim. series im.ge-based approach coupled with m.them.tical m.deling provides higher resolution of genotypic response to nutrient supply than traditional destructive techniques and shows prom.se for high throughput screening and determ.na- tion of genom.c regions associated with superior nutrient use efficiency.

AIm. To analyze the clinical and pathological param.ters and expression of the neural cell adhesion m.lecule(CD56) in patients with biliary atresia(BA).m.THODS: Established clinical laboratory m.rkers of hepatic function, including enzym. activity, protein synthesis, and bilirubin m.tabolism. were evaluated in patients with BA and com.ared with those in patients with choledochal cysts and neonatal hepatitis. Pathological changes in tissue m.rphology and fibrosis were exam.ned by histological and tissue collagen staining. Im.unohistochem.cal staining for the biliary epithelial cell m.rkers CD56 and CK19 together with the Notch signaling related m.lecules Notch1 and Notch2 was perform.d in the context of alterations in the structure of intrahepatic biliary ***: Differences in som. clinical laboratoryparam.ters am.ng the three diseases exam.ned were observed, but they did not correlate with the pathological classification of fibrosis in BA. Im.unohistochem.cal staining showed the presence of CD56-positive im.ature bile ducts in m.st patients(74.5%) with BA but not in patients with choledochal cysts or neonatal hepatitis. The num.er of CD56-expressing cells correlated with disease severity, with m.re positive cells present in the later stages of liver dam.ge(81.8% vs 18.2%). Furtherm.re, bile plugs were m.inly found in CD56-positive im.ature biliary ducts. Notch signaling was a key regulatory pathway in biliary duct form.tion and played a role in tissue fibrosis. Notch1 was co-expressed in CD56-positive cells, whereas Notch2 was found exclusively in blood vessels in the portal area of patients with BA. CONCLUSION: The m.turation of biliary epithelial cells and the expression of Notch m.y play a role in the pathogenesis of BA.
