Paradigm and Ecological Implication of Changing Agricultural Land-use:A Case study from Govind Wildlife sanctuary,Central Himalaya,India

The paper scrutinizes that the changes in any sub-system(***,livestock and forest) have direct impact on biophysical and social processes in village ecosystem of the central Himalayan *** view of this,we studied the changes in spatial patterns of agricultural land use and dependency of agroecosystem on forest and animal husbandry over a period of two *** on data analysis it was found that the cultivation of some traditional crops has either been abandoned in the area or declined by 25%-85% due to introduction of cash crops viz.,potato,kidney bean and apple farming with acreage increased up to 51%-72% in the last three *** population of different categories has declined drastically by 17%-75%,and has resulted shortage of farmyard manure,deterioration of soil quality and fertility which leads to un-sustainability of agriculture *** changes in agrobiodiversity have led to the dramatic increase in soil loss and runoff from the croplands together with the increase pressure on *** economic evaluation of each crop showed higher monetary benefit from cash crops as compared to traditional *** all the evaluated crops,the monetary output/input ratio was found highest(3.04) for kidney bean and lowest(1.26) for *** in land use and management have improved household income but at the cost of forest degradation,less productive animal husbandry and loss of agrodiversity in the ***,there is an urgent need to bring desirable changes in agricultural policy,research,land use and efficient management of the resources for maintaining sustainability in agro and Himalayan forest ecosystem.

The Potential Contribution of Wildlife sanctuary to Forest Conservation: A Case study from Binsar Wildlife sanctuary

Forest vegetation of a protected area(Binsar Wildlife sanctuary) in Kumaun region(west Himalaya) was analysed for structure,composition and representativeness across three different altitudinal belts,lower(1,600-1,800 m a.s.l.),middle(1,900-2,100 m a.s.l.) and upper(2,200-2,400 m a.s.l.) during 2009-2011 using standard phytosociological *** aspects(east,west,north and south) in each altitudinal belt were chosen for sampling to depict maximum representation of vegetation in the *** structure and regeneration behaviour was analysed seasonally for two years to show the establishment and growth of tree species.A total of 147 plant species were recorded from the entire region of which 27 tree species were selected for detailed *** number was recorded at upper(18 species),and lowest at lower altitudinal belt(15 species).The relative proportion of species richness showed higher contribution of tree layer at each altitudinal *** population structure,based on the number of individuals,revealed a greater proportion of seedling layer at each altitudinal *** relative proportion of seedlings increases significantly along altitudinal belts(psite trends were observed in sapling and tree *** density of sapling and seedling species varied non-significantly across seasons(p>0.05).The density values decreased in summer and increased during rainy *** far as the regeneration status is concerned,middle and upper altitudinal belts showed maximum number of species with fair regeneration as compared to lower altitudinal *** density diameter distribution of tree species showed highest species density and richness in the smallest girth class and decreased in the succeeding girth *** study suggests that patterns of regeneration behaviour would determine future structural and compositional changes in the forest *** is suggested that the compositional changes vis-à-vis role of ‘New' and ‘Not

Climate change impact in the Western Himalaya:people's perception and adaptive strategies

The Himalaya represents a vast mountain system and globally valued for its significant role in regulation of global as well as regional climate that has direct impact on biodiversity and ecosystem services crucial for sustenance of millions of people in Himalaya and adjoining areas. However, mountain regions worldwide are impacted by climate change and at the same time represent distinctive area for the assessment of climate related impacts. Climate change impacts in Himalayan region have its implications on food production, natural ecosystems,retreat of glacier, water supply, human and animal health and overall human well being. The livelihood and food security of the people inhabited in region largely depend on climate sensitive sectors ***, livestock, forestry and their interlinkages with each other, and has the potential to break down food and nutritional security as well as livelihood support systems. People's perception and understanding of climate can be an important asset when it comes to adaptation to climate change impact;however it is not taken into consideration for the development of policy design and implementation of modern mitigation and adaptation strategies by governments and other civil society *** knowledge of local people and farming communities for rural landscape management and sustainable use of bioresources is gaining credence as a key strategy to cope up with the climate ***, the present study analyzes the indigenous knowledge of local people and their perceptions on climate change, and also documented adaptation approaches at local level in mountain ecosystem of western Himalaya. The study could be useful to policy makers to design appropriate adaptation strategies to cope up with the impacts of climate change.

We consider the problem of extracting a low-energy spin Hamiltonian from a triangular Kondo Lattice Model(KLM).The non-analytic dependence of the effective spin-spin interactions on the Kondo exchange excludes the use of perturbation theory beyond the second *** then introduce a Machine Learning(ML)assisted protocol to extract effective two-and four-spin *** resulting spin model reproduces the phase diagram of the original KLM as a function of magnetic field and single-ion anisotropy and reveals the effective four-spin interactions that stabilize the field-induced skyrmion crystal ***,this model enables the computation of static and dynamical properties with a much lower numerical cost relative to the original KLM.A comparison of the dynamical spin structure factor in the fully polarized phase computed with both models reveals a good agreement for the magnon dispersion even though this information was not included in the training data set.
