Burden of COVID-19 in a Hemodialysis Center in Sub-Saharan Africa

Background: The current COVID-19 pandemic remains a great challenge to healthcare workers, especially caregivers of patients with chronic diseases. Despite the advances in knowledge on COVID-19, data on COVID-19 in haemodialysis (HD) remains rare in Africa. Methods: We conducted a review of records from 2020 May 13th to 2021 June 24th in the HD center of Yaoundé General Hospital. All staff and patients in the HD unit were included. Sociodemographic, clinical, laboratory, and radiological data and patient outcome data were collected. All statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 21.0 software (Chicago, IL). Results: In all 30 HD patients and 3 staff members were positive for COVID-19 during the period. The median age of the infected population was 56 years (37.25 - 62). The median dialysis vintage was 42 months (24 - 96). Hypertension (73.3%) and diabetes (36.6%) were frequent comorbidities. About 10% (n = 3) were asymptomatic whereas those who were symptomatic had a mean duration of symptoms of 7 ± 5.6 days. Fatigue (23/30), fever (21/30), cough (14/30) and diarrhoea (11/30) were the main symptoms. Oxygen saturation was low in 36.6% (n = 11) ranging from 82% - 89%. About 50% were admitted in hospital for social isolation;there was no admission in intensive care unit. Three patients (10%) died: 2 for respiratory distress and 1 for severe anaemia. Laboratory test was done in 60% (n = 18) of case and revealed in 72.2% (n = 13) patients low lymphocytes count (median 896/mm3 [800 - 1513]) and anaemia in 77.7% (median 8.5 g/dl [7.5 - 9.8]). Conclusions: HD patients are highly susceptible and HD centres are high risk areas during the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.

The chemical study of Rumex abyssinicus Jacp (Polygonaceae) led to the isolation of a new ceramide named (R)-2'-hydroxy-N-[(2S,3S,4R,16E)-1,3,4-trihydroxyhexacos-16-en-2-yl]hexadecanamide (rumexamide) (1) together with sixteen known compounds: bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (2), chrysophanol (3), physcion (4), citreorosein (5), emodin (6), chrysophanein (7), physcionin (8), lupeol (9), 3β,28-dihydroxylup-20(29)-ene (10), 3β-dihydroxylup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid (11), oleanolic acid (12), ergosta-6,22-diene-3,5,8-triol (13), stigmastane-3,6-dione (14), a mixture of β-sitosterol (15) and stigmasterol (16), and stigmasterol 3-O-β-D-glucoside (17). Their structures were determined by interpretation of their spectroscopic 1D NMR (1H and 13C NMR), 2D NMR (COSY 1H-1H, HSQC and HMBC) data in conjunction with mass spectrometry (TOFeSIMS and HR-TOFeSIMS) and by comparison with those reported in the literature. Among all the known compounds, twelve (2, 5, 8-17) were firstly isolated from Rumex abyssinicus, seven (2, 10-14 and 17) from the genus Rumex and three (13, 14, 17) from family Polygonaceae. This work aims to screen mutant rice lines tolerant to Striga *** rainfed sensitive rice varieties B22 and F154 were *** survival rates of the two parents were significantly lower respectively(9.74a and 11.83a)than those of mutant lines(55.36c to 74.36b);Striga plants emergence/pot were significantly higher for the parents(13.96c and14.89c)compared to the mutants(0.12a to 1.5b);the infection rate of parents(7.37b;7.86b)was higher compared to the mutants(2.27a to 2.74a);fertility rate/plant of parents was lower(20.98%b;22.29%b)but much higher than mutants(72.19%b to 78.35%b);the average panicle number/plant of parents was significantly lower(0.5a;1a)than those of mutants(1.5b to 2.4bc)and the 100 g grain weight of parents are lower(2.35a;2.56a)than those of mutants(3.19b to 3.23b).The culture of those mutant lines may increase rice production and contribute to enhancing food security in Madagascar.
