The capability of embedded piezoelectric wafer active sensors(PWAS)to perform in-situ nondestructive evaluation(NDE)for structural health monitoring(SHm)of reinforced concrete(RC)structures strengthened with fiber reinforced polymer(FRP)composite overlays is ***,the disbond detection method were developed on coupon specimens consisting of concrete blocks covered with an FRP composite *** was found that the presence of a disbond crack drastically changes the electromecfianical(E/m)impedance spectrum lneasurcd at the PWAS *** spectral changes depend on the distance between the PWAS and the crack ***,large scale experiments were conducted on a RC beam strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP)composite *** beam was subject to an accelerated fatigue load regime in a three-point bending configuration up to a total of 807,415 *** these fatigue tests,the CFRP overlay experienced disbonding beginning at about 500,000 *** PWAS were able to detect the disbonding before it could be reliably seen by visual *** correlation between the PWAS readings and the position and extent of disbond damage was *** preliminary results demonstrate the potential of PWAS technology for SHm of RC structures strengthened with FRP composite overlays.

Comparative Analysis of Indoor Levels of Suspended Particulates and Nitrogen Dioxide a Few Hours later after an Asthmatic Attack

Suspended particulates （TSP） and nitrogen dioxide （NO2） are known respiratory irritants linked to asthma aggravation. This pilot study was designed to investigate the role of these pollutants on the frequency of asthmatic attack on two of the inhabitants of a household. The surveillance of TSP and NO2 in this household commenced a few hours later, after one of the occupants suffered an attack. The TSP load determination was done using a High Volume Gravimetric sampler and a light scattering method via a Haz-Dust 10 μm particulate monitor. Palmes Diffusion tubes for NO2 and a portable Crowcon Gasman toxic gas detector were utilized for NO2 screening. In the first day of monitoring in the living room, the in situ particulate sampler （Haz-Dust） recorded a mean TSP level of 26,000 μg·m^-3. A confirmatory test with the eight hour average Gravimetric sampler gave 25,833 μg·m^-3. With the use of the Gasman toxic gas detector for NO2, the NO2 concentration for the first few hours of sampling was lower than 188 μg·m^-3, the detection limit of this instrument. However, the exact NO2 concentrations for the 7 day monitoring after the attack were 27.50 μg·m^-3 （kitchen） and 12.03 μg·m^-3 （living room） as recorded by the Palmes diffusion tubes.

Dear Editor,Despite substantial advances in neonatal medicine, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) continues to be a serious therapeutic challenge⑴.Visual acuity loss in patients with ROP has been associated with structural retinal abnormalities (including retinal detachment, retinal folds, and pigmentary retinopathy), cataract, glaucoma, and amblyopia due to refractive error or strabismus[2].

Background and Aims:In the REALm (Randomized, Obser-vational Study of Entecavir to Assess Long-Term Outcomes Associated with Nucleoside/Nucleotide monotherapy for Pa-tients with Chronic HBV Infection) study, 12,378 patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection received up to 10 years of randomized therapy with entecavir or another HBV nucleos(t)ide analogue. monitored clinical outcome events (COEs) included malignant neoplasms, HBV disease progres-sion events, and deaths. An external event adjudication com-mittee (EAC) was convened to provide real-time review of reported COEs to optimize data quality, and minimize poten-tial adverse effects of the large cohort, interdisciplinary out-come assessments, geographic scope, and long duration. methods:The EAC comprised an international group of hep-atologists and oncologists with expertise in diagnosis of tar-geted COEs. The EAC reviewed and adjudicated COEs according to prospectively defined diagnostic criteria cap-tured in the EAC charter. Operational processes, including da-ta collection and query procedures, were implemented to optimize efficiency of data recovery to maximize capture of adjudicated COEs, the primary study outcome measure. Results: A total of 1724 COEs were reported and 1465 of these events were adjudicated by the EAC as reported by the investigators (85.0% overall concordance). Concordance by COE type varied: deaths, 99.6%;hepatocellular carcino-ma (HCC), 83.3%;non-HCC malignancies, 88.0%;non-HCC HBV disease progression, 68.2%. Reasons for lack of con-cordance were most commonly lack of adequate supporting data to support an adjudicated diagnosis or evidence that the event pre-dated the study. Conclusions: The REALm EAC performed a critical role in ensuring data quality and consis-tency;EAC performance was facilitated by well-defined diag-nostic criteria, effective data capture, and efficient operational processes. Esophageal squamous cell cancer in a highly endemic region

AIm: To identify risk factors associated with esophageal cancer in Zambia and association between dietary intake and urinary 8-iso prostaglandin F2α(8-iso PGF2α).mETHODS: We conducted a prospective, case control study at the University Teaching Hospital. Subjects included both individuals admitted to the hospital and those presenting for an outpatient upper endoscopy. Esophageal cancer cases were compared to age and sex-matched controls. Cases were defined as patients with biopsy proven esophageal cancer; controls were defined as subjects without endoscopic evidence ofesophageal cancer. Clinical and dietary data were collected using a standard questionnaire, developed a priori. Blood was collected for human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) serology. Urine was collected, and 8-iso PGF2α was measured primarily by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and expressed as a ratio to ***: Forty five controls(mean age 54.2 ± 15.3, 31 male) and 27 cases(mean age 54.6 ± 16.4, 17 males) were studied. Body mass index was lower in cases(median 16.8) than controls(median 23.2), P = 0.01. Histopathologically, 25/27(93%) were squamous cell carcinoma and 2/27(7%) adenocarcinoma. more cases smoked cigarettes(OR = 11.24, 95%CI: 1.37-92.4, P = 0.02) but alcohol consumption and HIV seropositivity did not differ significantly(P = 0.14 for both). Fruit, vegetables and fish consumption did not differ significantly between groups(P = 0.11, 0.12, and 0.10, respectively). mean isoprostane level was significantly higher in cases(0.03 ng/mg creatinine) than controls(0.01 ng/mg creatinine)(OR = 2.35, 95%CI: 1.19-4.65, P = 0.014).CONCLUSION: Smoking and isoprostane levels were significantly associated with esophageal cancer in Zambians, but diet, HIV status, and alcohol consumption were not.

Finite-Size Conformational Transitions: A Unifying Concept Underlying Chromosome Dynamics

Investigating average thermodynamic quantities is not sufficient to understand conformational transitions of a finite-size polymer. We propose that such transitions are better described in terms of the probability distribution of some finite-size order parameter, and the evolution of this distribution as a control parameter varies. We demonstrate this claim for the coil-globule transition of a linear polymer and its mapping onto a two-state model. In a biological context, polymer models delineate the physical constraints experienced by the genome at different levels of organization,from DNA to chromatin to chromosome. We apply our finite-size approach to the formation of plectonemes in a DNA segment submitted to an applied torque and the ensuing helix-coil transition that can be numerically observed, with a coexistence of the helix and coil states in a range of parameters. Polymer models are also essential to analyze recent in vivo experiments providing the frequency of pairwise contacts between genomic loci. The probability distribution of these contacts yields quantitative information on the conformational fluctuations of chromosome regions. The changes observed in the shape of the distribution when the cell type or the physiological conditions vary may reveal an epigenetic modulation of the conformational constraints experienced by the chromosomes.

AIm: To assess whether DNA methylation patterns in chronic alcoholics are different from non-alcoholic sibling controls. mETHODS: We examined the methylation patterns in DNA samples from 25 chronic alcoholics and 22 matched siblings as controls (one per family). DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and analyzed for differences in the methylation patterns after bisulfite-conversion. We used the Illumina GoldenGate methylation Cancer Panel I (Illumina, San Diego, CA), which probes the methylation profile at 1505 CpG sites from 807 cancer related genes. We excluded the 84 X-chromosome CpG sites and 134 autosomal CpG sites that failed to show a within sample reliability score of at least 95% for all samples, leaving 1287 autosomal CpG sites (associated with 743 autosomal genes) with reliable signals for all samples. A methylation score was calculated as the average methylation for the 1287 CpG sites examined. Differences were assessed by a two-sample t-test. We also examined the average sib pair differences in methylation scores at each of the 1287 sites. All analyses were performed using SPSS, version 9.0, P methylation levels at the 1287 CpG sites averaged 28.2% for both alcoholics and controls. The mean difference in methylation scores between alcoholic and non-alcoholic sibs by CpG site was mall inter-individual variances; and only 5 CpG sites had an average sib difference > 5%. Subgroup analysis showed that methylation scores were significantly lower for the alcoholic-dependent subjects who smoked compared to their non-smoking unaffected siblings. Specifically, among smokers who are alcoholic, global methylation indices were significantly lower than in non-alcoholic sib controls, whereas among non-smoking alcoholics, the global indices were significantly higher (P = 0.008). Air or inert atmosphere irradiation of liquid normal alkanes C5-C8 and benzene by electron beam was carried out. Oxidation （in the air） or isomerization （in the inert gases） of liquid normal alkanes under electron beam was shown. Action of electron beam on benzene molecules in the air or in the inert atmosphere leads to biphenyl, terphenyl and polymers. Irradiation by the bunch of electrons of mixture hexane with 10% benzene reduced to firm fractions （fullerene＇s similar structures） in a deposit.
