Survival Rate Analysis on Breast Cancer Cases at Univesity College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria

Breast cancer is one of the leading diseases that affect women’s lives. It affects their lives in so many ways by denying them the required standard of health needed to carry out all of their daily activities for some days, weeks, months or years before eventually causing death. This research estimates the survival rate of breast cancer patients and investigates the effects of stage of tumor, gender, age, ethnic group, occupation, marital status and type of cancer upon the survival of patients. Data used for the study were extracted from the case file of patients in the Radiation Oncology Department, University College Hospital, Ibadan using a well-structured pro forma in which 74 observations were censored and 30 events occurred. The Kaplan-Meier estimator was used to estimate the overall survival probability of breast cancer patients following their recruitment into the study and determine the mean and median survival times of breast cancer patients following their time of recruitment into the study. Since there are different groups with respect to the stages of tumor at the time of diagnosis, the log-rank test was used to compare the survival curve of the stages of tumor with considering p-values below 0.05 as statistically significant. Multivariate Cox regression was used to investigate the effects of some variables on the survival of patients. The overall cumulative survival probability obtained is 0.175 (17.5%). The overall estimated mean time until death is 28.751 weeks while the median time between admission and death is 23 weeks. As the p-value (0.000032) of the log-rank test for comparing stages of tumor is less than 0.05, it is concluded that there is significant evidence of a difference in survival times for the stages of tumor. The survival function plot for the stages of tumor shows that patients with stage III tumor are less likely to survive. From the estimated mean time until death for the stages of tumor, it was deduced that stage I tumor patients

Congenital radio-ulnar synostosis (CRUS) is a rare skeletal malformation of the upper limb and the most common congenital functional disorder of the elbow joint, causing limitation in forearm rotational movements, which may lead to difficulties with some activities of daily living. We reported a 4-year-old girl with congenital bilateral proximal radio-ulnar synostosis who presented with functional discomfort due to limitation of the prono-supination movements of the forearms and abnormal gestures when handling objects. She has clinical and radiological features of congenital radio-ulnar synostosis (CRUS). However, the parents declined corrective surgery because of wrong perception of the condition to be normal. This case highlighted the poor health seeking behavior and wrong illness perception prevalent in the developing countries.

Background: The study determined the fractions of proteins in the urine and plasma of rats at different ages, measured the plasma and urine concentrations of markers of renal function, with a view to determining the influence of proteinuria on renal ***: Eighty Wistar rats were used for this study. Groups 1 and 2 each consisted of eight 1-month-old male and female rats; 3 and 4 had eight 3-month-old male and female rats; 5 and 6 had eight 6-month-old male and female rats; 7 and 8 had eight 9-month old male and female rats; and 9 and 10 had eight 12-month-old male and female ***: A fraction of the molecular weight of protein in the urine of rats aged 1, 9 and 12 months was higher than that of 3 and 6 months. The total protein concentration in the urine of male and female rats aged 9 and 12 months was significantly higher than that of rats aged 1 and 3 months. The urine creatinine concentrations of male and female rats aged 9 months were significantly higher when compared with that of 1, 3, 6 and 12 ***: Our results suggest that the 3-month-old rats seem less affected by proteinuria, because they had the least urine protein, and consistent and reduced plasma and urine concentrations of markers of renal function. The results of this study may provide a foundation for future mechanistic inquiries as to why this age group was the least affected by proteinuria.

Evaluation of influential parameters for supersonic dehydration of natural gas: Machine learning approach

The supersonic dehydration of natural gas is gaining more attention due to its numerous advantages over the conventional natural gas dehydration ***,supersonic separators have seen minimal field applications despite the multiple benefits over other gas dehydration *** has been mostly attributed to the uncertainty in ascertaining the design and operating parameters that should be monitored to ensure optimum dehydration of the supersonic separation *** this study,the decision tree machine learning model is employed in investigating the effects of design and operating parameters(inlet and outlet pressures,nozzle length,throat diameter,and pressure loss ratio)on the supersonic separator performance during dehydration of natural *** model results show that the significant parameters influencing the shock wave location are the pressure loss ratio and nozzle *** former was found to have the most significant effect on the dew point *** dehydration efficiency is mainly dependent on the pressure loss ratio,nozzle throat diameter,and the nozzle *** the machine learning model-accuracy with a 1-D iterative model,the machine learning model outperformed the 1-D iterative model with a lower mean average percentage error(MAPE)of 5.98 relative to 15.44 as obtained for the 1-D model.

Franchisees Can Claim to Be Entrepreneurially Skilled or Not Three-Pronged Perceptions

Entrepreneurial skills determine the success or failure of a business operator. Researchers in the field of franchising, however, believe that to succeed as a franchisee, a business operator does not have to have high entrepreneurial skill levels. This study, titled ＂Whether Franchisees Can Claim to be Entrepreneurially Skilled--Three-Pronged Perceptions＂, surveyed 32 franchisees, 45 experts, and 64 independent entrepreneurs. It hypothesized that：（1） Independent entrepreneurs have higher skill levels than franchisees; （2） independent entrepreneurs＇ performance is better than franchisees＇ due to the differences in skill levels. Each of the franchisees and independent entrepreneurs was asked to rate themselves on a Likert scale against a list of traits or characteristics believed to determine levels of entrepreneurship. The experts were requested to rank within the scale whether independent entrepreneurs excel in entrepreneurial skills at the expense of franchisees. Franchisees ranked themselves at 3.5, on average, while independent entrepreneurs ranked themselves at 4.2 in the scale 1-5, with 5 indicating highest skill. On this basis, Hypothesis 1 is proved correct, i.e. independent entrepreneurs have higher entrepreneurial skill levels and at least they perceive themselves so. Experts, with an average rating of 3.4 within the scale, also seem to agree that independent entrepreneurs excel in entrepreneurial skills at the expense of franchisees. Using sales revenue and sales per employee as measure of performance, the study established average sales for franchised units at P275,038, while those for independent entrepreneurs were P86,437. Sales per employee ranged between P6 118 and P23,170 for franchised units, and between P8,207 and P 14,281 for independent entrepreneurs. Galerkin Method for Numerical Solution of Volterra Integro-Differential Equations with Certain Orthogonal Basis Function

This paper concerns the implementation of the orthogonal polynomials using the Galerkin method for solving Volterra integro-differential and Fredholm integro-differential equations. The constructed orthogonal polynomials are used as basis functions in the assumed solution employed. Numerical examples for some selected problems are provided and the results obtained show that the Galerkin method with orthogonal polynomials as basis functions performed creditably well in terms of absolute errors obtained.

Asymptotic Consistency of the James-Stein Shrinkage Estimator

The study explores the asymptotic consistency of the James-Stein shrinkage estimator obtained by shrinking a maximum likelihood estimator. We use Hansen’s approach to show that the James-Stein shrinkage estimator converges asymptotically to some multivariate normal distribution with shrinkage effect values. We establish that the rate of convergence is of order and rate , hence the James-Stein shrinkage estimator is -consistent. Then visualise its consistency by studying the asymptotic behaviour using simulating plots in R for the mean squared error of the maximum likelihood estimator and the shrinkage estimator. The latter graphically shows lower mean squared error as compared to that of the maximum likelihood estimator.

The accumulation of anthocyanins is a well-known response to abiotic stresses in many plant ***,the effects of anthocyanin accumulation on light absorbance and photosynthesis are ***,we addressed this question using a promoter replacement line of tomato constitutively expressing a MYB transcription factor(ANTHOCYANIN1,ANT1)that leads to anthocyanin ***1-overexpressing plants displayed traits associated with shade avoidance response:thinner leaves,lower seed germination rate,suppressed side branching,increased chlorophyll concentration,and lower photosynthesis rates than the wild ***-rich leaves exhibited higher absorbance of light in the blue and red ends of the spectrum,while higher anthocyanin content in leaves provided photoprotection to high *** of gene expression and primary metabolites content showed that anthocyanin accumulation produces a reconfiguration of transcriptional and metabolic networks that is consistent with,but not identical to those described for the shade avoidance *** results provide novel insights about howanthocyanins accumulation affects the trade-off between photoprotection and growth.
