Objective:The objective of this work is to study the effects of porosity on mechanical and piezoelectric properties of polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)films for biomedical *** Statement:By investigating the piezoelectric properties of PVDF and the porosity effect on its electromechanical performance,there is potential for further development of PVDF as a hemodynamic sensor that can lead to further technological advancements in the biomedical field,benefiting patients and physicians ***:PVDF thin films have shown potential in the application of hemodynamic flow sensing and monitoring the effects on blood flow caused by prosthetic valve implantation via the transcatheter aortic valve replacement *** piezoelectric performance of PVDF films can be influenced by the porosity of the ***:In this study,strain tracking was performed on thin film PVDF specimens with various levels of porosity and pore sizes to determine the mechanical properties of the *** mechanical properties were used to model the PVDF material in COMSOL multiphysics software,in which compression test simulations were performed to determine the piezoelectric coefficient d33 of the ***:A decline in the elastic modulus was found to be highly inversely correlated with porosity of the specimens and the simulation results show that elastic modulus had a much greater effect on the piezoelectric properties than Poisson’s ***:A combination of experimental and computational techniques was able to characterize and correlate the mechanical properties of PVDF films of varying porosities to their piezoelectric properties.

Exacerbated VEGF up-regulation accompanies diabetes-aggravated hemorrhage in mice after experimental cerebral ischemia and delayed reperfusion

Reperfusion therapy is the preferred treatment for ischemic stroke,but is hindered by its short treatment window,especially in patients with diabetes whose reperfusion after prolonged ischemia is often accompanied by exacerbated *** mechanisms underlying exacerbated hemorrhage are not fully *** study aimed to identify this mechanism by inducing prolonged 2-hour transient intraluminal middle cerebral artery occlusion in diabetic Ins2Akita/+mice to mimic patients with diabetes undergoing delayed mechanical *** results showed that at as early as 2 hours after reperfusion,Ins2Akita/+mice exhibited rapid development of neurological deficits,increased infarct and hemorrhagic transformation,together with exacerbated down-regulation of tight-junction protein ZO-1 and upregulation of blood-brain barrier-disrupting matrix metallopeptidase 2 and matrix metallopeptidase 9 when compared with normoglycemic Ins2+/+*** indicated that diabetes led to the rapid compromise of vessel integrity immediately after reperfusion,and consequently earlier death and further aggravation of hemorrhagic transformation 22 hours after *** observation was associated with earlier and stronger up-regulation of pro-angiogenic vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)and its downstream phospho-Erk1/2 at 2 hours after reperfusion,which was suggestive of premature angiogenesis induced by early VEGF up-regulation,resulting in rapid vessel disintegration in diabetic *** reticulum stress-related pro-apoptotic C/EBP homologous protein was overexpressed in challenged Ins2Akita/+mice,which suggests that the exacerbated VEGF up-regulation may be caused by overwhelming endoplasmic reticulum stress under diabetic *** conclusion,the results mimicked complications in patients with diabetes undergoing delayed mechanical thrombectomy,and diabetes-induced accelerated VEGF up-regulation is likely to underlie exacerbated hemorrhagic transformat

Evolutionary Algorithms in Software Defined Networks: Techniques, Applications, and Issues

A software defined networking(SDN) system has a logically centralized control plane that maintains a global network view and enables network-wide management, optimization, and innovation. Network-wide management and optimization problems are typicallyvery complex with a huge solution space, large number of variables, and multiple objectives. Heuristic algorithms can solve theseproblems in an acceptable time but are usually limited to some particular problem circumstances. On the other hand, evolutionaryalgorithms(EAs), which are general stochastic algorithms inspired by the natural biological evolution and/or social behavior of species, can theoretically be used to solve any complex optimization problems including those found in SDNs. This paper reviewsfour types of EAs that are widely applied in current SDNs: Genetic Algorithms(GAs), Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO), Ant Colony Optimization(ACO), and Simulated Annealing(SA) by discussing their techniques, summarizing their representative applications, and highlighting their issues and future works. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first that compares the tech-niques and categorizes the applications of these four EAs in SDNs.

Delineation of Biological Tumor Volume from Positron Emission Tomography Images in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Objective: To develop an auto-segmentation method for delineating the biological tumor volume of nasopharyngeal carcinoma from positron emission tomography images. Methods: A phantom consisting of a water tank with fixed background fluorodeoxyglucose [18F-FDG] activity and spheres with diameters ranging from 2.1 to 5 cm with varying activities of FDG were used to simulate tumors of different sizes and FDG uptake. The phantom was scanned with a PET/CT scan at different sphere to background intensity ratios. An optimum fixed percentage threshold (FT) approach and a signal-to-background ratio (SBR) approach were developed to estimate the true size of the spheres from the PET images. Both approaches were further evaluated in patient images for validation. Twenty-two patients with NPC from stage T1 to T4 were included. The PET based biological tumor volumes (BTV) were delineated with both FT (BTVFT) and SBR (BTVSBR) approaches and compared with the gross tumor volume localized from MRI (GTVMR). The mean volumes of BTVFT and BTVSBR were compared and the degree of overlap between GTVMR and both BTVs was evaluated. Paired t-tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: The optimal FT value was 36.5% of maximal intensity, and SBR approach was represented by an inverse linear regression model. The estimated volume of spheres segmented by both approaches shows no significant difference from the true volume of spheres (p > 0.05), but the average absolute errors were smaller from SBR approach than FT approach (p = 0.008). GTVMR was larger than both BTVFT (p = 0.003) and BTVSBR (p SBR with GTVMR is significantly larger than with BTVFT (0.52 and 0.42 respectively, p MR for radiotherapy planning purpose.

Background and Objective:Hong kong,like many parts of Asia,faces a high burden of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)caused by high endemic rates of hepatitis B virus *** kong clinicians have developed a high level of expertise in HCC treatment across surgical,transarterial,ablative,radiotherapeutic and systemic *** publication summarizes the latest evidence-based recommendations on how these modalities should be ***:In two meetings held in 2020,a multidisciplinary panel of surgeons,oncologists and interventional radiologists performed a narrative review of evidence on the management of HCC,with an emphasis on treatment of HCC not amenable to surgical *** attention was paid to new evidence published since the previous version of these statements in *** Content and Findings:The expert panel has formulated 60 consensus statements to guide the staging and treatment of unresectable *** the previous version of these statements,considerable additions have been made to the recommendations on use of targeted therapies and immunotherapies because of the large volume of new ***:Our consensus statements offer guidance on how to select HCC patients for surgical or non-surgical treatment and for choosing among non-surgical modalities for patients who are not candidates for *** particular,there is a need for more evidence to aid physicians in the selection of second-line systemic therapies,as currently most data are limited to patients with disease progression on first-line sorafenib.

In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry(eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter; neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. Under development by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020 s.
