Development of new antimalarial drugs continues to be of great importance due to the resistance of the malaria parasite to currently used drugs. Glycolytic enzymes have emerged as potential targets for the development of new drugs due to the reliance of the parasite on glycolysis for energy. In this study, molecular docking was used to study the binding of some quinoline-based drugs to the glycolytic enzyme lactate dehydrogenase. The docking studies identified two potential binding sites for each ligand, one of them being the cofactor-binding site. for all ligands studied, there was the comparable binding to the cofactor-binding site as well as the secondary binding site when the cofactor was absent. All ligands showed significantly lower binding affinity than NADH for the cofactor binding site. The alternative site was the site of preference when docking was done in the presence of the cofactor. While binding to the cofactor site may support other studies suggesting potential for competitive inhibition, the fact that the binding affinities of all the ligands are significantly lower than that for NADH in this site suggests that these ligands will be ineffective competitive inhibitors. The identification of an alternative binding site with comparable affinity that is not affected by the presence of the cofactor may suggest the possibility of non-competitive inhibition that requires further exploration.

Hypolipidemic and Antioxidative Effects of African Star Apple Juice (Chrysophylum albidum) on Rats fed on Diets High in Cholesterol and Oil

This study investigated the possible hypolipidemic and antioxidative effects of Chrysophylum albidum juice in rats fed on highcholesterol and fatty diets (HfCD). The juice was expressed, pasteurized and frozen until needed. Diets were formulated by mixing at different ratios. Bio-assay of the blends was carried out for a period of 28 days. Twenty five male rats were divided into five groups of five each: a normal diet group, a high-cholesterol diet group, a high fat/Cholesterol diet with 3 ml of African Star Apple Juice group, a high fat/Cholesterol diet with 6 ml of African Star Apple Juice group, and a high fat/Cholesterol diet with 9 ml of African Star Apple Juice group. Blood serum, selected tissues and organs were collected and the serum lipid profile, organ histology and oxidative stress test were carried out at the end of the animal experimentation. The levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol and artherogenic index obtained from rats treated with African star apple juice (3 ml, 6 ml and 9 ml) decreased significantly (P ≤ 0.05), compared respectively to the HfCD rats. The results also showed that treatment with African star apple (Chrysophylum albidum) positively changed plasma antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid profiles in cholesterol-fed rats, and thus may have potential hypolipidemic and antioxidant effects, and by inference, the antiatherogenic properties in male rats. African star apple (Chrysophylum albidum) juice could protect against oxidative stress linked atherosclerosis and decrease the atherogenic index, thereby supporting the local use of Chrysophylum albidum in the management of atherosclerosis and hypertensive conditions.

The non-elementary integrals involving elementary exponential, hyperbolic and trigonometric functions, and where α,η and β are real or complex constants are evaluated in terms of the confluent hypergeometric function 1f1 and the hypergeometric function 1f2. The hyperbolic and Euler identities are used to derive some identities involving exponential, hyperbolic, trigonometric functions and the hypergeometric functions 1f1 and 1f2. Having evaluated, these non-elementary integrals, some new probability measures generalizing the gamma-type and Gaussian distributions are also obtained. The obtained generalized probability distributions may, for example, allow to perform better statistical tests than those already known (e.g. chi-square (x2) statistical tests and other statistical tests constructed based on the central limit theorem (CLT)), while avoiding the use of computational approximations (or methods) which are in general expensive and associated with numerical errors.

Research on two-dimensional(2D) materials is one of the most active fields in materials science and nanotechnology. Among the members of the 2D family, layered hydroxides(LHs) represent an exceptional case of study due to their unparalleled chemical versatility which allows the modulation of their physicochemical properties at will. Nowadays, LHs based on earth-abundant metals are key materials in the areas of energy storage and conversion, hybrid materials or magnetism. α-Co hydroxides(Simonkolleite-like structures) are promising phases with tuneable electronic and magnetic properties by ligand modification. However, even in the simple case of α-Co^(Ⅱ) hydroxychlorides, the preparation of well-defined large 2D crystals is not straightforward, hindering the development of fundamental studies. Herein, we present the synthesis of 2D hexagonal crystals with outstanding sizethickness relationship(diameter > 5 μm and thickness of 20 ± 7 nm) by a simple homogeneous synthesis taking place at room temperature. In structural terms, no differences are observed between our layered materials and those obtained hydrothermally. However, dynamic susceptibility measurements alert about different arrangements of the magnetic sublattices, which have been rationalized with structural DfT calculations. This work provides an extremely easy bottom-up method to obtain high-quality 2D crystals based on α-CoIIhydroxides,paving the way for the development of fundamental studies and applications.

The paper reports the properties of supershort avalanche electron beam(SAEB) and x-ray formed in different gases at pressures from 1 torr up to 1 *** is shown that at a nanosecond discharge in the atmospheric pressure air and SAEB current recording through a small area of the foil the pulse duration behind the foil is no more than 25 ps,but from all surface of foil is about 100 *** A1 foil of thickness 10μm, the number of electrons from the entire foil anode in the atmospheric pressure air was 6.2·10 per pulse and this corresponds to a SAEB amplitude of～100 A at a 100-ps triangular pulse *** is shown that the highest amplitudes of SAEB with pulse duration about 100 ps are attained in helium,hydrogen, and nitrogen at a pressure of about 60,30,and 10 torr,*** the extracted data, estimates show that with the generator SLEP used,optimization of all parameters of the gas diode makes possible a SAEB current amplitude of about 500 A at a helium pressure of 60 torr. As the mode of the beam generation is changed due to the decrease in pressure from the above noted values,one can gradually control the fWHM of the beam current pulse between 100 and 500 ps in all gases studied.

Aims Changes in habitat characteristics and species composition in suc-cessional gradients could determine temporal variation in phenol-ogy of second-growth *** evaluated phenological patterns in tree species occurring in successional forests in southern Brazil,aiming to assess community changes along *** tested for general patterns and phenophase seasonality of trees of forests in successional stages and for differences in occurrence,concentra-tion,frequency and duration of *** Vegetative(flushing and leaf-fall)and reproductive(flowering and fruiting)phenophases of 149 individuals of 29 tree species were monitored monthly,for 2 years,in a successional gradient:early-(~10 years),mid-(~30 years)and late-successional(>80 years)forests in southern *** findings forests in the successional gradient exhibited shared frequency and duration of phenological phases,probably due to climatic or historical constraints in ***,we found differences in the rate of occurrence and concentration of phenological phases,suggesting that habitat changes caused by succession and species turnover are additional factors affecting phenological patterns in tropical forests.

All modes of operation of a two-capacitor generator based on overflow of the charge accumulated in capacitors through the load resistance between two capacitors with antiphase modulated capacitances by means of in-plane or out-of-plane shift of the electrode plates under action of a mechanical force are analyzed paying the especial attention to fabrication of the generators with small sizes. Numerical solutions for all the modes are obtained, and they are found to be universal. Analytical estimates of the maximum power of the generator as a function of the capacitances modulation factor are derived. Experimental investigations of a two-capacitor rotational electric generator show that its characteristics are consistent with the analysis performed and that this analysis can be used to describe all specific features of operation of particular generators. Applications of the devices in micro-design for feeding the remote sensors are discussed.

Wear tests were carried out to study the effect of the hardness and roughness with various counterface materials on UHMWPE wear behaviour. The materials used as counterfaces were based on varieties of CoCrMo: 1) forged (hand-polished) CoCrMo, 2) forged (mass-finished) CoCrMo, and 3) cast (mass-finished) CoCrMo. Additionally, two coatings were proposed: 1) a CoCrMo coating applied to the forged CoCrMo alloy by means of physical vapour deposition (PVD), and 2) a ZrO2 coating applied to the forged CoCrMo alloy by means of plasma-assisted chemical vapour deposition (PACVD). The reciprocating pin-on-flat (RPOf) device for pin-on-disk wear testing was used for this study. The worn surfaces were observed using optical, atomic force and scanning electron microscopes.
