Invasive black spiny-tailed iguanas(Ctenosaura similis)on Gasparilla Island,Florida,USA

The native range of Ctenosaura similis extends from southern mexico through Panama. From an initial introduction of 3 animals in 1979, the species now numbers in the thousands on Gasparilla Island in southwest Florida. In response to complaints of property damage from residents and threats to native species, local officials and the US Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services began a removal program in 2008. Through 2011, trappers removed 9467 ctenosaurs. The number removed declined from 32 iguanas/day in 2008 to 1.9 iguanas/day in 2011 despite no easing of the control effort. We necropsied 2757 ctenosaurs to document aspects of their natural history. Females outnumbered males overall, although the largest size class (>300 mm snout-vent length) included 32 males and just 2 females. Reproduction was seasonal. We found oviducal eggs in females from early Apr to early Jun, approximately 2 months later than C. similis in its native range. We trapped hatchlings from late Jul to early Oct coincident with the summer rainy season. Clutch size increased with female body size, with 62 being the largest clutch size recorded. In general, the biology of the invasive population on Gasparilla Island resembles native C. similis populations in Central America, except for the lack of large individuals. We suggest that shorter day length and colder temperatures create environmental conditions that are suboptimal for individual growth compared to those in the native range.

Role of bacterial and genetic factors in gastric cancer in Costa Rica

AIm： To evaluate several risk factors for gastric cancer （GC） in Costa Rican regions with contrasting GC incidence rate （GCIR）. mETHODS： According to GCIR, 191 Helicobacter pylori （H pylori）-positive patients were classified into groups A （high GCIR, n = 101） and B （low GCIR, n = 90）. Human DNA obtained from biopsy specimens was used in the determination of polymorphisms of the genes coding for interleukin （IL）-1β and IL-10 by PCRRFLP, and IL-1RN by PCR. H pylori DNA extractions obtained from clinical isolates of 83 patients were used for PCR-based genotyping of H pylori cagA, vacA and babA2. Human DNA from gastric biopsies of 52 GC patients was utilized for comparative purposes. RESULTS： Cytokine polymorphisms showed no association with GCIR variability. However, gastric atrophy, intestinal metaplasia and strains with different vacA genotypes in the same stomach （mixed strain infection） were more frequently found in group A than in group B, and cagA and vacA s1b were significantly associated with high GCIR （P = 0.026 and 0.041, respectively）. IL- 1β＋3954_T/C （OR 2.1, 1.0-4.3）, IL-1RN^＊2/L （OR 3.5, 1.7-7.3） and IL-10-592_C/A （OR 3.2, 1.5-6.8） were individually associated with GC, and a combination of these cytokine polymorphisms with Hpylori vacA slb and ml further increased the risk （OR 7.2, 1.4-36.4）. CONCLUSION： Although a proinflammatory cytokine genetic profile showed an increased risk for developing GC, the characteristics of Hpylori infection, in particular the status of cagA and vacA genotype distribution seemed to play a major role in GCIR variability in Costa Rica.

Acetaminophen and zinc phosphide for lethal management of invasive lizards Ctenosaura similis

Reducing populations of invasive lizards through trapping and shooting is feasible in many cases but effective inte-grated management relies on a variety of tools, including toxicants. In Florida, using wild-caught non-native black spiny-tailed iguanas Ctenosaura similis, we screened acetaminophen and zinc phosphide to determine their suitability for effective population management of this prolific invasive species. Of the animals that received acetaminophen, none died except at the highest test dose, 240 mg per lizard, which is not practical for field use. Zinc phosphide produced 100% mortality at dose levels as little as 25 mg per lizard, equivalent to about 0.5% in bait which is lower than currently used in commercial baits for commensal rodent con-trol. We conclude that zinc phosphide has potential as a useful tool for reducing populations of invasive lizards such as the black spiny-tailed iguana provided target-selective delivery methods are developed [Current Zoology 57 （5）： 625~529, 2011].

Outdoor fresh air ventilation plays a significant role in reducing airborne transmission of diseases in indoor *** classrooms are considerably challenged during the COVID-19 pandemic because of the increasing need for in-person education,untimely and incompleted vaccinations,high occupancy density,and uncertain ventilation *** schools started to use CO_(2)meters to indicate air quality,but how to interpret the data remains *** uncertainties are also involved,including manual readings,student numbers and schedules,uncertain CO_(2)generation rates,and variable indoor and ambient *** study proposed a Bayesian inference approach with sensitivity analysis to understand CO_(2)readings in four primary schools by identifying uncertainties and calibrating key *** outdoor ventilation rate,CO_(2)generation rate,and occupancy level were identified as the top sensitive parameters for indoor CO_(2)*** occupancy schedule becomes critical when the CO_(2)data are limited,whereas a 15-min measurement interval could capture dynamic CO_(2)profiles well even without the occupancy *** CO_(2)recording should be avoided because it failed to capture peak values and overestimated the ventilation *** the four primary school rooms,the calibrated ventilation rate with a 95%confidence level for fall condition is 1.96±0.31 ACH for Room#1(165 m^(3)and 20 occupancies)with mechanical ventilation,and for the rest of the naturally ventilated rooms,it is 0.40±0.08 ACH for Room#2(236 m^(3)and 21 occupancies),0.30±0.04 or 0.79±0.06 ACH depending on occupancy schedules for Room#3(236 m^(3)and 19 occupancies),0.40±0.32,0.48±0.37,0.72±0.39 ACH for Room#4(231 m^(3)and 8–9 occupancies)for three consecutive days.

Using the win ratio to compare laparoscopic versus open liver resection for colorectal cancer liver metastases

Background:We sought to assess the overall benefit of laparoscopic versus open hepatectomy for treatment of colorectal liver metastases(CRLms)using the win ratio,a novel methodological ***:CRLm patients undergoing curative-intent resection in 2001-2018 were identified from an international multi-institutional *** were paired and matched based on age,number and size of lesions,lymph node status and receipt of preoperative *** win ratio was calculated based on margin status,severity of postoperative complications,90-day mortality,time to recurrence,and time to ***:Among 962 patients,the majority underwent open hepatectomy(n=832,86.5%),while a minority underwent laparoscopic hepatectomy(n=130,13.5%).Among matched patient-to-patient pairs,the odds of the patient undergoing laparoscopic resection“winning”were 1.77[WR:1.77,95%confidence interval(CI):1.42-2.34].The win ratio favored laparoscopic hepatectomy independent of low(WR:2.94,95%CI:1.20-6.39),medium(WR:1.56,95%CI:1.16-2.10)or high(WR:7.25,95%CI:1.13-32.0)tumor burden,as well as unilobar(WR:1.71,95%CI:1.25-2.31)or bilobar(WR:4.57,95%CI:2.36-8.64)*** odds of“winning”were particularly pronounced relative to short-term outcomes(i.e.,90-day mortality and severity of postoperative complications)(WR:4.06,95%CI:2.33-7.78).Conclusions:Patients undergoing laparoscopic hepatectomy had 77%increased odds of“winning”.Laparoscopic liver resection should be strongly considered as a preferred approach to resection in CRLm patients.

STING regulates BCR signaling in normal and malignant B cells

STING is an endoplasmic reticulum(ER)-resident protein critical for sensing cytoplasmic DNA and promoting the production of type Ⅰ interferons;however,the role of STING in B cell receptor(BCR)signaling remains *** generated STING V154m knock-in mice and showed that B cells carrying constitutively activated STING specifically degraded membrane-bound Igm,Ig a and Igβ via SEL1L/HRD1-mediated ER-associated degradation(ERAD).B cells with activated STING were thus less capable of responding to BCR activation by phosphorylating Igα and Syk than those without activated *** immunized with T-independent antigens,STING V154m mice produced significantly fewer antigen-specific plasma cells and antibodies than immunized wild-type(WT)*** further generated B cell-specific STING^(KO) mice and showed that STING^(KO) B cells indeed responded to activation by transducing stronger BCR signals than their STING-proficient *** B cell-specific STING^(KO) mice were T-independently immunized,they produced significantly more antigen-specific plasma cells and antibodies than immunized STIN^(WT)*** both human and m ouse IGHV-unmutated malignant chronic lymphocytic leukemia(CLL)cells downregulated the expression of STING,we explored whether STING downregulation could contribute to the well-established robust BCR signaling phenotype in malignant CLL *** generated a STING-deficient CLL mouse model and showed that STING-deficient CLL cells were indeed more responsive to BCR activation than their STING-proficient *** results revealed a novel B cell-intrinsic role of STING in negatively regulating BCR signaling in both normal and malignant B cells.

Early pregnancy maternal cardiovascular profiling in the prediction of hypertensive disease in pregnancy

Prediction of hypertensive disease in pregnancy remains challenging. Risk factor based screening utilizing history, physical characteristics, uterine artery Doppler and serum markers have been used with varying success. As hypertension in pregnancy appears to be associated with changes in the maternal vasculature, we have investigated the utility of maternal arterial elasticity measurement, prior to 20 weeks gestation, in the prediction of hypertensive disease in pregnancy. A HDI/Pulsewave CR2000 Research Cardiovascular Profiling System was used to obtain radial artery pulse pressure waveforms from 623 Caucasian women at the time of their first antenatal visit. Outcome data were available in 610 cases and these comprised the study group. The results showed that women who subsequently developed gestational hypertension (n = 20) had higher baseline systolic, diastolic and pulse pressure values (though within the normal range) but similar arterial elasticity to those patients who did not develop hypertension. Women who later developed pre-eclampsia (n = 23) had, in addition, reduced large artery elasticity and increased systemic vascular resistance compared with women who did not develop hypertension. The measurement of maternal radial artery elasticity in early pregnancy may provide an additional refinement in screening for hypertensive disease, particularly pre-eclampsia, in pregnancy.
