Ecological immunology:do sexual attraction and immunity trade-off through a desaturase?

Given the limited availability of resources in nature,sexual attractiveness may trade off with immunocompetence,as the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis(ICHH)*** invertebrates,a direct link between trade-offs through hormonal/molecular effectors in sexual signals and immunity has not been found so ***,we assessed how variation in sexual signals affected parasite infection in two sex pheromone selected lines of the moth Chloridea virescens:an attractive line with a low ratio of 16:Ald/Z11-16:Ald and an unattractive line with a high *** infecting these lines with an apicomplexan parasite,we found that the attractive Low line was significantly more susceptible to the parasite infection than the unattractive High *** the ratio difference between these two lines is determined by a delta-11-desturase,we hypothesized that this desaturase may have a dual role,i.e.,in the quality of the sexual signal as well as an involvement in immune response,comparable to testosterone in ***,when we used CRISPR/cas9 to knockout delta-11-desturase in the attractive Low line,we found that the pheromonal phenotype did change to that of the High line,but the infection susceptibility did ***,when checking the genomic location of delta-11-desaturase in the ***,we found that mucin is adjacent to *** comparing the mucin sequences in both lines,we found four nonsynonymous SNPs in the coding sequence,as well as intronic variation between the two *** differences suggest that genetic hitchhiking may explain the variation in susceptibility to parasitic infection.

Tribological interactions between surgical suture and human tissue play an important role in the stitching *** purpose of the paper is to understanding the tribological behavior of surgical suture interacting with artificial skin,with respect to surgical suture material and structure,by means of a capstan experiment approach and a contact area *** results indicated that structure and surface topography of the surgical suture had a pronounced effect on the tribological *** apparent coefficient of friction of vicryl surgical suture was the smallest among the three surgical suture *** the sliding velocity increased,or the applied load decreased,the coefficient of friction ***,stick-slip phenomena were observed during the sliding procedure.

The application of tribological knowledge is not just restricted to optimizing mechanical and chemical engineering *** fact,effective solutions to friction and wear related questions can be found in our everyday *** important part is related to skin tribology,as the human skin is frequently one of the interacting surfaces in relative *** seem to solve these problems related to skin friction based upon a trial-and-error strategy and based upon on our sense for *** question of course rises whether or not a trained tribologist would make different choices based upon a science based strategy?In other words:Is skin friction part of the larger knowledge base that has been generated during the last decades by tribology research groups and which could be referred to as Science Friction?This paper discusses the specific nature of tribological systems that include the human skin and argues that the living nature of skin limits the use of conventional *** tribology requires in vivo,subject and anatomical location specific test *** predictive friction models can only partially be applied to predict in vivo skin *** reason for this is found in limited understanding of the contact mechanics at the asperity level of product-skin interactions.A recently developed model gives the building blocks for enhanced understanding of friction at the micro *** largely simplified power law based equations are currently available as general engineering ***,the need for friction control is illustrated by elaborating on the role of skin friction on discomfort and *** texturing and polymer brush coatings are promising directions as they provide way and means to tailor friction in sliding contacts without the need of major changes to the product.

Background::Severe burns induce volume shifts via capillary leaks, eventually requiring massive fluid resuscitation and promoting tissue edema. Albumin may help to mitigate the edema, thereby improving perfusion. This study shows that sublingual microcirculation measurements can quantify both tissue perfusion and ***::This prospective observational study was conducted between November 2018 and December 2019 in the intensive care unit of Maasstad Hospital Burn Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Patients with severe burns affecting >15% of the total body surface area were included. Fluid management was conducted in accordance with the Parkland formula. Albumin (20%) was administered at a rate of 0.5 mL/(kg·h), starting 12 h after the burn incident. Alterations in the sublingual microcirculation, including capillary perfusion and density, were measured at admission (T0) and 4 h (T4) and 12 h (T12) after admission. Sublingual depth of focus (DOF) of the microcirculation was used to quantify the tissue ***::Nine patients were recruited with a mean total body surface area of 36% ± 23%. By T12, a median of 4085 mL (interquartile range [IQR]: 3714-6756 mL) of crystalloids and 446 mL (IQR: 176-700 mL) of 20% albumin were administered. The DOF increased significantly after crystalloid administration (T4 vs. T0, mean difference [MD]=27.4 μm, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.4 to 50.9, P=0.040). Following albumin administration, DOF significantly decreased (T12 vs. T4, MD=-76.4 μm, 95% CI: -116.6 to -36.1, P=0.002). Total vessel density decreased significantly with crystalloid administration (T4 vs. T0, MD=-3.5 mm/mm 2, 95% CI: -5.7 to -1.4, P=0.004) but increased after albumin administration (T12 vs. T4, MD=6.2 mm/mm 2, 95% CI: 3.2 to 9.3, P=0.001). Landslide Loss and Damage in Sindhupalchok District, Nepal:Comparing Income Groups with Implications for Compensation and Relief

The 2014 Jure landslide in Sindhupalchok District, Nepal, caused significant loss and damage to ecosystems and livelihoods in the area. In the direct aftermath of the landslide, several disaster loss assessments were conducted, with the aim of counting casualties,injured people, and damaged houses and *** useful and necessary in their own right, such rapid assessments do not reveal the true extent and significance of the losses and damages that people in disaster areas face, including their monetary value. We address this gap, based on a comprehensive household survey(N = 234), as well as other, qualitative research tools. Our results highlight the importance of differentiating between loss and damage in absolute monetary terms as opposed to losses relative to annual income. We find a stark contrast between the high absolute losses incurred by nonpoor households, and the high relative losses—up to 14 times their annual income—experienced by poor *** results have important implications for policy that addresses loss and damage, not only of landslides but also of other disasters. Loss and damage assessments need to take the livelihood characteristics of affected households into account to identify and support those most in need of compensation and relief.

Self-healing metals possess the capability to autonomously repair structural damage during service. While self-healing concepts remain challenging to be realized in metals and metallic systems due to the small atomic volume of the mobile atoms, the slow diffusion unless at high temperatures and the strong isotropic metallic bonds, the scientific interest has increased sharply and promising progress is obtained. This article provides a comprehensive and updated review on the developments and limitations associated with the various modes of potentially healable damage induced in metals and alloys, i.e., stressinduced damage, irradiation-induced damage in bulk materials and contact damage in corrosion protective coatings. The spontaneous intrinsic healing mechanisms not requiring external assistance other than the material operating at the right temperature and an assisted healing mechanism with external intervention are reviewed. Promising strategies to achieve self-healing in metals are identified. Finally, we give some prospects for future research directions in self-healing metals.
