Micromorphology of Surface Crusts in the Knersvlakte,South Africa

Soils in the Knersvlakte are particularly prone to crusting and have lower inherent infiltrability than other soils across western southern Africa. Micromorphological techniques were used to examine the structure and porosity of soil crusts in the Knersvlakte to ascertain why crusting is so intense in this region. Quantile regression using boundary lines was employed to examine the relationships between infiltrability and soil properties for all samples （n = 67）. This analysis showed that infiltrability is potentially maximal at low water- dispersible ＇clay plus silt＇ content and low silt content （r^2 = 0.72 and 0.64; respectively, n = 67）（Figure 2）. The strength of crusts, pH, EC, clay mineralogy, and water-dispersible clay, silt and ＇clay plus silt＇ content were compared, and a pore analysis using optical microscopy was undertaken on images of six soil thin sections （n = 6）（circular and parallel polarizers）. Pore analysis was further undertaken on five horizontal slices of equal dimensions taken through each soil thin section. The porosity samples with low infiltrability （〈 100 mm·hr^-1, n = 4） had greater crust strength, lower porosity （both total and in the least porous slice） and greater water-dispersible ＇day plus silt＇ and silt content than the porosity samples with high infiltrability （〉 100mm·hr^-1, n = 2）. The porosity samples with low infiltrability showed a trend of lower pH and greater water dispersible clay percentage. Porosity varied within the porosity samples due to the presence of dense clay/silt bands （〈 0.5 mm in width） with relatively few air vesicles. The porosity samples with horizontal slices of low porosity （but large numbers of air vesicles） had low infiltrability, while those without slices of low porosity （and relatively few air vesicles） had high infiltrability. EUV continuum radiation（10–30 nm） arising only from very low energy pulsed pinch gas discharges comprising some hydrogen was first observed at Black Light Power, Inc. and reproduced at the Harvard Center for Astrophysics（Cf A）. The source was determined to be due to the transition of H to the lower-energy hydrogen or hydrino state H（1/4） whose emission matches that observed wherein alternative sources were eliminated. The identity of the catalyst that accepts 3 · 27.2 eV from the H to cause the H to H（1/4） transition was determined to HOH versus 3H. The mechanism was elucidated using different oxide-coated electrodes that were selective in forming HOH versus plasma forming metal atoms as well as from the intensity profile that was a mismatch for the multi-body reaction required during 3H catalysis. The HOH catalyst was further shown to give EUV radiation of the same nature by igniting a solid fuel comprising a source of H and HOH catalyst by passing a low voltage, high current through the fuel to produce explosive plasma. No chemical reaction can release such high-energy light. No high field existed to form highly ionized ions that could give radiation in this EUV region that persisted even without power input. This plasma source serves as strong evidence for the existence of the transition of H to hydrino H（1/4） by HOH as the catalyst and a corresponding new power source wherein initial extraordinarily brilliant light-emitting prototypes are already producing photovoltaic generated electrical power. The hydrino product of a catalyst reaction of atomic hydrogen was analyzed by multiple spectroscopic techniques. Moreover, the m H catalyst was identified to be active in astronomical sources such as the Sun, stars and interstellar medium wherein the characteristics of hydrino match those of the dark matter of the Universe.

Pericytes have the potential to be developed as a cell therapy for the treatment of wounds;however,the efficacy of any cell therapy relies on the successful delivery of intact and functioning ***,the effect of delivering pericytes on wound repair was assessed alongside the development of a surface-functionalized pericyte *** polymerization(PP)was used to functionalize the surface of silicone patches with heptylamine(HA)or acrylic acid(AA)*** pericytes were subsequently delivered to murine excisional wounds by intradermal inj.ction or using the pericyte-laden patches and the comparative effects on wound healing,inflammation and revascularization *** AA surface provided the superior transfer of the cells to de-epidermized *** murine wounds treated either with pericytes inj.cted directly into the wound or with the pericyte-laden AA patches showed improved healing with decreased neutrophil infiltration and reduced numbers of macrophages in the *** delivery also enhanced angiogenesis through a mechanism independent of VEGF ***,when delivered to wounds,improved healing responses by dampening inflammation and promoting *** of pericytes using PP-AA-functionalized patches was equally as effective as direct inj.ction of pericytes into ***-functionalized dressings may therefore be a clinically relevant approach for the treatment of wounds.

The positron emission particle tracking （PEPT） technique has been widely used in science and engineering to obtain detailed information on the motion and flow fields of fluids or granular materials in multiphase systems, for example, fluids in rock cracks, chemical reactors and food processors; dynamic behaviour of granular materials in chemical reactors, granulators, mixers, dryers, rotating kilns and ball mills. The information obtained by the PEPT technique can be used to optimise the design, operational conditions for a wide range of industrial process systems, and to evaluate modelling work. The technique is based on tracking radioactively labelled particles （up to three particles） by detecting the pairs of backto-back 511 keV γ-rays arising from annihilation of emitted positrons. It therefore involves a positron camera, location algorithms for calculating the tracer location and speed, and tracer labelling techniques. This paper will review the particle tracking technique from tracking algorithm, tracer labelling to their application.

This paper examines a selection of OB （organizational behaviour） textbooks from 1992 to 2012. Using both content analysis and semiotic language analysis, the purpose of this paper is to illustrate how sports images in textbooks--although used to ostensibly explain organizational behaviour concepts--can have implications for addressing issues of gender, race, ethnicity, disabilities, and intersectionality. We conclude that sports images and metaphors （along with other asides, examples, and illustrations） need to be used carefully and reflectively.

A coal mine in New South Wales is longwall mining 300 m wide panels at a depth of 160–180 m directly below a 16–20 m thick conglomerate strata. As part of a strategy to use hydraulic fracturing to manage potential windblast and periodic caving hazards associated with these conglomerate strata,the in-situ stresses in the conglomerate were measured using ANZI strain cells and the overcoring method of stress relief. Changes in stress associated with abutment loading and placement of hydraulic fractures were also measured using ANZI strain cells installed from the surface and from underground. Overcore stress measurements have indicated that the vertical stress is the lowest principal stress so that hydraulic fractures placed ahead of mining form horizontally and so provide effective pre-conditioning to promote caving of the conglomerate strata. Monitoring of stress changes in the overburden strata during longwall retreat was undertaken at two different locations at the mine. The monitoring indicated stress changes were evident 150 m ahead of the longwall face and abutment loading reached a maximum increase of about7.5 MPa. The stresses ahead of mining change gradually with distance to the approaching longwall and in a direction consistent with the horizontal in-situ stresses. There was no evidence in the stress change monitoring results to indicate significant cyclical forward abutment loading ahead of the face. The forward abutment load determined from the stress change monitoring is consistent with the weight of overburden strata overhanging the goaf indicated by subsidence monitoring.

Gastroesophageal cancers are leading causes of cancer *** attempts at adopting molecularly based treatment approaches have been slow and ineffective even though we begin to identify specific targetable gene mutations and *** is dear that we should no longer treat all gastroesophageal cancers as a homogeneous disease,which is what we do when we use nonspecific ***,we currently cannot monitor successful gene/pathway targeting,nor understand how/when tumors develop resistance,nor predict which patients will derive maximal *** improve outcomes,we must precisely detail the heterogeneity of these tumors to then individualize cancer therapy as well as develop novel avenues to study and predict treatment effects in individual *** this end,patient-derived organoids,in which tumor cells from individual patients are grown in a Petri dish,are a new versatile system that allows for timely expandability,detailed molecular characterization,and genetic manipulation with the promise of enabling predictive assessment of treatment *** this review,we will explore the development and basic techniques for organoid generation,and discuss the current and potential future applications of this exciting technology to study the basic science of carcinogenesis and to predict/guide cancer patient care in the clinics.

Folate and vitamin B12 in idiopathic male infertility

Although methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, a folate enzyme gene, has been associated with idiopathic male infertility, few studies have examined other folate-related metabolites and genes. We investigated whether idiopathic male infertility is associated with variants in folate, vitamin B12 （B12） and total homocysteine （tHcy）-related genes and measured these metabolites in blood. We conducted a case-control study that included 153 men with idiopathic infertility and 184 fertile male controls recruited at the Fertility Center and Antenatal Care Center, University Hospital, Malmo and Lund, Sweden. Serum folate, red cell folate （RCF）, serum B12, plasma tHcy and semen quality were measured. Subj.cts were genotyped for 20 common variants in 12 genes related to folate/B12/ homocysteine metabolism. Metabolite concentrations and genotype distributions were compared between cases and controls using linear and logistic regression with adj.stment for covariates. The phosphatidylethanolamine N-methyltransferase （PEMT） M 175V and TCblR rs173665 polymorphisms were significantly associated with infertility （P=0.01 and P=0.009, respectively）, but not with semen quality. Among non-users of supplements, infertile men had lower serum folate concentrations than fertile men （12.89 vs. 14.73 nmoll^- 1 P=0.02）, but there were no significant differences in RCF, B 12 or tHcy. Folate, B 12 and tHcy concentrations were not correlated with any semen parameters. This study provides little support for low folate or B12 status in the pathogenesis of idiopathic male infertility. Although additional data are needed to confirm these initial findings, our results suggest that PEMTand TCbIR, genes involved in choline and B12 metabolism, merit further investigation in idiopathic male infertility.
