Blood-brain barrier and cerebral blood flow: Age differences in hemorrhagic stroke

Neonatal stroke is similar to the stroke that occurs in adults and produces a significant morbidity and long-term neurologic and cognitive *** are important differences in the factors,clinical events and outcomes associated with the stroke in infants and ***,mechanisms underlying age differences in the stroke development remain largely ***,treatment guidelines for neonatal stroke must extrapolate from the adult data that is often not suitable for *** new information about differences between neonatal and adult stroke is essential for identification of significant areas for future treatment and effective prevention of neonatal ***,we studied the development of stress-induced hemorrhagic stroke and possible mechanisms underlying these processes in newborn and adult *** histological methods and magnetic resonance imaging,we found age differences in the type of intracranial *** rats demonstrated small superficial bleedings in the cortex while adult rats had more severe deep bleedings in the *** Doppler optical coherent tomography,we found higher stress-reactivity of the sagittal sinus to deleterious effects of stress in newborn *** rats suggesting that the cerebral veins are more vulnerable to negative stress factors in neonatal *** brain in ***,adult but not newborn rats demonstrated the stroke-induced breakdown of blood brain barrier(BBB)*** one of possible mechanisms underlying the higher resistance to stress-related stroke injures of cerebral vessels in newborn rats compared with adult animals is the greater expression of two main tight junction proteins of BBB(occludin and claudin-5)in neonatal *** brain in rats.

Reducing the Dose of Local Anesthetic Reduces the Duration of Analgesia—Myth or Reality: A Double-Blind Randomized Study

Background: The aim of the study is to determine the effect of a reduction in dose of local anesthetic blockade on the development of the sciatic nerve. Methods: Forty blocks of sciatic nerve were used in a double-blind randomized research, under ultrasonic guidance, using an electric stimulator with the peripheral nerves. Forty patients were divided into 2 equal groups. In the first group, a sciatic nerve block was performed with 5 ml of 0.75% ropivacaine solution (37.5 mg);in the second group, 10 ml of 0.75% ropivacaine solution (75 mg) was used. The assessment of the time required for developing sensory and motor blocks was carried out from the beginning of local anesthetic solution injection in the fascial sheath of the sciatic nerve. Results: Demographic data of patients were identical in the two sample groups. The time required for achieving a complete sensory block in groups treated with 5 and 10 ml ropivacaine was 45 (40;48) and 30 (28;30) min, respectively, (р 0.05. Conclusions: Complete blockade of the sciatic nerve is developed using 5 ml of 0.75% ropivacaine. Reducing the dose of ropivacaine prolongs the latent period of the LA during the blockade of the sciatic nerve. Time of postoperative analgesia was not significantly changed.

Medical images classification for skin cancer using quantitative image features with optical coherence tomography

Optical coherence tomography(OCT)is employed in the diagnosis of skin ***,quantitative image features extracted from OCT images might be used as indicators to classify the skin *** the present paper,we investigated intensity-based,texture-based and fractalbased features for automatically classifying the melanomas,basal cell carcinomas and pigment *** estimating equations were used to test for differences between the skin tumors.A modified p value ofered statistically *** increase of mean and median of intensity and significant decrease of mean and median of absolute gradient were observed in basal cell carcinomas and pigment nevi as compared with *** decrease of contrast,entropy and fractal dimension was also observed in basal cell carcinomas and pigment nevi as compared with *** results suggest that the selected quantitative image features of OCT images could provide useful information to differentiate basal cell carcinomas and pigment nevi from the *** research is warranted to determine how this approach may be used to improve the classification of skin tumors.

Gold nanorods with a hematoporphyrin-loaded silica shell for dual-modality photodynamic and photothermal treatment of tumors in vivo

Nanocomposites （NCs） consisting of a gold nanorod core and a mesoporous silica shell doped with hematoporphyrin （HP） have been fabricated in order to improve the efficiency of cancer treatment by combining photothermal and photodynamic therapies （PDT ＋ PTT） in vivo. In addition to the long-wavelength plasmon resonance near 810-830 nm, the fabricated NCs exhibited a 400-nm absorbance peak corresponding to bound HP, generated singlet oxygen under 633-nm excitation near the 632.5-nm Q-band, and produced heat under a 808-nm near-infrared （NIR） laser irradiation. These modalities were used for a combined PDT ＋ PTT treatment of large （about 3 cm3） solid tumors in vivo with a xenorafted tumor rat model. NCs were directly injected into tumors and irradiated simultaneously with 633-nm and 808-nm lasers to stimulate the combined photodynamic and photothermal activities of NCs. The efficiency of the combined therapy was evaluated by optical coherence tomography, histological analysis, and by measurements of the tumor volume growth during a 21-day period. The NC-mediated PDT led to weak changes in tissue histology and to a moderate 20% decrease in the tumor volume. In contrast, the combined PDT ＋ PTT treatment resulted in the large-area tumor necrosis and led to dramatic decrease in the tumor volume.

The present article examines a range of attempts to give a definition to the term ‘philosophy', undertaken in Chinese works on the history of Chinese philosophy in the early 20 th century. Focus of the article is on the writings of Xie Wuliang, Hu Shih, Zhong Tai and Feng Youlan. These researchers were pioneers in formulating the first histories of Chinese philosophy, and in their works, they tried to figure out the problem field of philosophy and identify the place and role of the Chinese thought in the global philosophy. Modern understanding of philosophy in China is based on the definitions provided for in these writings.

The effect of Greenhouse Ozone on Human

The article compares the IR absorption spectra of the gases of the earth’s atmosphere with frequencies, close to the frequency of the maximum of thermal radiation of human. It is shown that such a gas is ozone. Being in the transparency window of the atmosphere, it emits absorbed thermal radiation from the earth. This radiation, in turn, gets to maximum heat absorption (radiation) of a human, and being with it in resonance, fuels him with energy. In larger cities this nourishment is weakened because of the smog due to the strong scattering of earth radiation and ozone. Thus, the “greenhouse ozone” as a natural source of infrared radiation has beneficial effect on human.

Traveling Wave Solutions of the Quintic Complex One-Dimensional Ginzburg-Landau equation

A subset of traveling wave solutions of the quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (QCGLe) is presented in compact form. The approach consists of the following parts: 1) Reduction of the QCGLe to a system of two ordinary differential equations (ODes) by a traveling wave ansatz;2) Solution of the system for two (ad hoc) cases relating phase and amplitude;3) Presentation of the solution for both cases in compact form;4) Presentation of constraints for bounded and for singular positive solutions by analysing the analytical properties of the solution by means of a phase diagram approach. The results are exemplified numerically.

Mixing enhancement in a Coaxial Jet Mixer

experimental investigations of mixing in a coaxial jet mixer have been carried out applying Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) methods simultaneously. A developed turbulent jet of an aqueous solution of Rhodamine 6G issued from the nozzle was mixed with co-flow water. Velocity and scalar fields were studied quite far downstream flow to control the formation of a quasi homogeneous mixture. The intensity of mixing was varied by mouthpieces with rectangular and triangular vortex generators of different sizes installed in the nozzle. The formation length of the quasi homogeneous mixture was reduced about 10 jet diameters by the tabs. The triangular tabs were more effective than the rectangular ones.
