Biophotonics is an emerging multidisciplinary research area, embracing all light-based technologies applied to the life sciences and medicine [1-6]. The expression itself is the combination of the Greek syllables ＂bios＂ standing for life and ＂phos＂ standing for light. Photonics is the technical term for all methodologies and technologies utilizing photons over the whole spectrum from X-ray over the ultraviolet, visible and the infrared to the terahertz region, and its interaction with any matter. Beyond this definition, biophotonics is a scientific discipline of remarkable societal importance. As a part of photonics, it has proved to be an important enabling technology for accelerated progress in medicine and biotechnology. It can do so, because it originated at the interface of the most innovative academic disciplines of the last century, i.e., photonics, biotechnology and nanotechnologies. This field of research brings together scientists from different professions, such as physicists, biologists, pharmacists, medical doctors, etc. To work on common projects, they need to understand the ideas and the techniques of their counterparts.

Nanostructured Metal Aggregate-Assisted Lasing in Rhodamine 6G Solutions

We report on the experimental demonstration of considerable lowering of stimulated luminescence (lasing) threshold in R6G laser dye solution doped with metal agglomerates (Ag, Al, Ni) upon second harmonic of Nd:YAG-laser illumination. Due to strong structural coupling between individual nanoparticles, they may form fractal agglomerates providing an extreme optical pump-field enhancement near their complicated surface. For the first time, we have observed more than twofold increase in lasing efficiency of metal aggregated dye solution as compared to non-agglomerated monomeric metal nanocolloids. No random laser manifestation or surface plasmon-polariton resonances excitations were observed.

evaluation of the earth＇s Magnetospheric Magnetic Field Models by Means of Cosmic Ray Data

At present, there are no reliable methods to evaluate uncertainty of model representation of magnetic field （MF） in the whole volume of the earth＇s magnetosphere. Cosmic ray intensity distribution on the earth surface contains information on the space distribution of magnetospheric MF through which charged particles propagate. Feasibility and limitations of cosmic ray data to be a tool for the validation of magnetospheric MF models have been analyzed. The authors＇ approach is based on the fact that time variations of magnetospheric cosmic ray are related to the changes in geomagnetic cutoff rigidities. The obtained cutoff rigidity changes by the trajectory tracing method in the MF model with those obtained on the base of experimental cosmic ray data have also been compared. The obtained results have shown that cosmic ray data can be successfully used for validation of models in presenting the dynamic structure of magnetospheric MF at mid latitudes.

Medication beliefs predict medication adherence in ambulatory patients with decompensated cirrhosis

AIM To investigate the impact of medication beliefs, illness perceptions and quality of life on medication adherence in people with decompensated *** One hundred adults with decompensated cirrhosis completed a structured questionnaire when they attended for routine outpatient hepatology review. Measures of self-reported medication adherence(Morisky Medication Adherence Scale), beliefs surrounding medications(Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire), perceptions of illness and medicines(Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire), and quality of life(Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire) were examined. Clinical data were obtained via patient history and review of medical records. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and stepwise backwards regression techniques were used to construct the multivariable logistic regression model. Statistical significance was set at alpha = *** Medication adherence was " High " in 42 % o f participants, "Medium" in 37%, and "Low" in 21%. Compared to patients with "High" adherence, those with "Medium" or "Low" adherence were more likely to report difficulty affording their medications(P er perception of treatment helpfulness(P = 0.003) and stronger medication concerns relative to medication necessity beliefs(P = 0.003). People with "Low" adherence also experienced greater symptom burden and poorer quality of life, including more frequent abdominal pain(P = 0.023), shortness of breath(P = 0.030), and emotional disturbances(P = 0.050). Multivariable analysis identified having stronger medication concerns relative to necessity beliefs(Necessity-Concerns Differential ≤ 5, OR = 3.66, 95%CI: 1.18-11.40) and more frequent shortness of breath(shortness of breath score ≤ 3, OR = 3.87,95%CI: 1.22-12.25) as independent predictors of "Low"*** The association between "Low" adherence and patients having strong concerns or doubting the necessity or helpfulness of their medications should be explor

The state of the art in optical biosensing is focused on reaching high sensitivity at a single wavelength by using any type of optical *** common strategy,however,disregards the promising possibility of simultaneous measurements of a bioanalyte’s refractive index over a broadband spectral ***,we address this issue by introducing the approach of in-fibre multispectral optical sensing(IMOS).The operating principle relies on detecting changes in the transmission of a hollow-core microstructured optical fibre when a bioanalyte is streamed through it via liquid *** offers a unique opportunity to measure the refractive index at 42 wavelengths,with a sensitivity up to ~3000 nm per refractive index unit(RIU)and a figure of merit reaching 99 RIU^(−1) in the visible and near-infra-red spectral *** apply this technique to determine the concentration and refractive index dispersion for bovine serum albumin and show that the accuracy meets clinical needs.

Intralesional injection of triamcinolone(TMC)preparations is an effective therapy for cystic acne ***,invasive delivery techniques limit the use of this modality to a relatively narrow class of *** permeability can be enhanced through creating a lattice of microzones(islets)of light-induced limited thermal damage in the upper layers of *** this paper,we directly compared safety and efficacy of delivering TMC acetonide with this novel technique versus conventional intralesional injection for treatment of inflammatory acne lesions.A combination of an intense pulsed light system and a specially designed appliqu´e with a pattern of absorbing centers has been used to create the lattice of islets of damage(LID).Quantitative analysis has included estimation of the following parameters:redness,diameter,and height of acne *** photography has been used to document dynamics of lesion development at successive visits(two hours,24 hours and one week post-treatment).Seven subjects have participated in the *** difference in lesion dynamics between the treatment and control groups was observed at two-hours *** 24-hours/one-week follow-ups,TMC-injected and TMC-LID-delivered groups have demonstrated 82%/93%and 80%/89%improvement in height of lesions in comparison to control(60%/68%).Delivery of TMC with the newly proposed LID technique is at least as effective as intralesional injection for treating inflammatory acne *** of skin permeability using LID approach is a promising technique for accelerating delivery of various compounds to their target areas in the skin.

Peculiarities of Structural Transformations in HAZ Metal of Rail Steel M76 Joint Produced by Flash-Butt Welding

The railway transport is one of the main types of communications in the world. Analysis of service conditions of the most critical elements of the railway transport rolling stock （mils, wheels and tyres） shows that one of the main factors determining their reliability and service life is the structural-phase state of steel, which is formed in the process of its producing. Complication of service conditions leads to the more severe requirements, specified by the consumers, where the high level of strength and hardness should be combined with high values of ductility and toughness. Realization of these requirements is possible only at the integrated approach to the improvement of technology of their production on the basis of profound knowledge in kinetics of austenite decay processes of structure formation and its contribution to the mechanical properties. With the formation of mainly bainite-martensite structures in the HAZ （heat-affected zone） metal of welded joints of these steels and saturation of this region with diffusive hydrogen their susceptibility to the cold cracking is increased. In this connection this work presents the results of investigations of effect of the WTC （welding thermal cycles） on the nature of structural transformations, hardness, static strength and resistance to the formation of cold cracks in HAZ metal of high-strength carbon rail steel M76. For this purpose, the structure and kinetics of transformation of an overcooled austenite was studied using the advanced methods of physical materials science by the modeling of phase transformations in the Gleeble 3800 unit. It was found that the cause of reduction in mechanical properties of welded joints of steel M76 is the formation of regions with a completely martensite structure in the amount of up to 5%. Results of investigations will be applied for the optimizing the technology and conditions of FBW of the advanced rail steels. 10 Ref., 4 Tables, 11 Figures.

Graphene as a two-dimensional material is prone to hydrocarbon contaminations,which can significantly alter its intrinsic electrical ***,we implement a facile hydrogenation-dehydrogenation strategy to remove hydrocarbon contaminations and preserve the excellent transport properties of monolayer *** electron microscopy we quantitatively characterized the improved cleanness of hydrogenated graphene compared to untreated *** situ spectroscopic investigations revealed that the hydrogenation treatment promoted the adsorption of water at the graphene surface,resulting in a protective layer against the re-deposition of hydrocarbon ***,the further dehydrogenation of hydrogenated graphene rendered a more pristine-like basal plane with improved carrier mobility compared to untreated pristine *** findings provide a practical post-growth cleaning protocol for graphene with maintained surface cleanness and lattice integrity to systematically carry a range of surface chemistry in the form of a well-performing and reproducible transistor.

Differential Diagnosis of Thyrotoxic Myopathy

Along with hereditary myopathies, there are many exogenic (the same a not hereditary) muscle affections due to the pathology of endocrine gland’s functioning. These forms of muscle pathology are called endocrine myopathies. In the cases of thyroid gland hyperfunction (the same a thyrotoxicosis), different regions of neuromuscular system may be involved in the pathological process. Thyrotoxic myopathy (TM) which is a subject of this investigation, occupies one of the first places between thyrotoxic (the same a thyrotoxicosis) neuromuscular affections. Meanwhile, for a long time in literature there was no clarity about the degree of muscle weakness and atrophy to diagnose TM in a patient. It’s because of the fact that the majority of patients complain of increased fatigue and general weakness due to thyrotoxicosis. In present time TM diagnostics is very rare. TM is a phenocopy (the clinical similar) of many neuromuscular diseases. However in literature, the data about peculiarities of clinical picture of TM is almost completely absent, it isn’t known about the frequency of affection of the isolated muscles or muscle groups, the topography of muscle weakness and successive involvement of isolated muscles in the pathological process during different stages of thyrotoxicosis and myopathy. The questions of differential diagnosis with similar neuromuscular disorders are described very poorly. In present article, we accent our attention at the clinical differentiation of the TM with other neuromuscular diseases, namely muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, polymyositis, Addison’s disease, proximal spinal muscular atrophy, steroid myopathy and neurosis. In our opinion, the early diagnosis of TM may help the diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis in patients who have no classical clinical signs of this disease, i.e. in patients with latent thyrotoxicosis.
