Background: Despite the conservative treatm.nt of tibio-fem.ral osteoarthritis through realignm.nt osteotom.es, the rate of total knee replacem.nts following an osteotom. is increasing. The aim.of this study was to identify the factors associated with the progression of knee osteoarthritis after a m.dial closing-wedge distal fem.ral osteotom.. m.thods: Hospital-based observational study on 20 patients who underwent a m.dial closing-wedge distal fem.ral osteotom. evaluating the progression of osteoarthritis using the Kellgren and Laurence classification. The Wilcoxon test was used to com.are the variation in the progressive stage of the Kellgren and Laurence classification of knee osteoarthritis preoperatively and at the final follow up. Univariate analysis m.de it possible to determ.ne the factors associated with progression. The final significance threshold for statistical tests was set at 5% (p Results: Overall, the m.an follow-up of 46 m.nths ± 6.6 m.nths, with a m.an age of 43 years (range: 27 - 69 years) and a fem.le predom.nance (m. F = 3/7). The progression of tibiofem.ral osteoarthritis following a m.dial closing-wedge distal fem.ral osteotom. is associated with valgus or varum.m.lalignm.nt been a m.derate valgus (OR 6.2 [1.5 - 42.7] at 95% CI;p-value = 0.02), a correction of the m.chanical deviation angle with a valgus alignm.nt (OR 2.7 [0.9 - 8.3] at 95% CI), and loss of correction (OR 3.8 [1.3 - 11.6] at 95% CI;p -value) for the lateral com.artm.nt while varus alignm.nt (OR 1.7 [0.9 - 8.3] 95% CI, p-value = 0.05) and with rupture of the lateral cortex (OR 2.8 [1.7 - 11.5] 95% CI, p-value = 0.02) were those of the m.dial com.artm.nt. Conclusion: Distal fem.r closing wedge osteotom. does not definitively interrupt the progression of valgus knee osteoarthritis. The factors associated with the progression of this pathology are m.difiable. Taking them.into account when perform.ng this surgical technique could im.rove the osteotom. survival curve.

Objective:To identify possible stone-prom.ting m.crobes,we com.ared the profiles of m.crobes grown from.stones of patients with and without m.tabolic syndrom.(m.tS).The association between m.tS and urinary stone disease is well established,but the exact pathophysiologic relationship rem.ins *** evidence suggests urinary tract dysbiosis m.y lead to increased nephrolithiasis ***:At the tim. of percutaneous nephrolithotom.,bladder urine and stone fragm.nts were collected from.patients with and without *** sam.le types were subjected to expanded quantitative urine culture(EQUC)and 16 S ribosom.l RNA gene ***:Fifty-seven patients included 12 controls(21.1%)and 45 m.tS patients(78.9%).Both cohorts were sim.lar with respect to dem.graphics and non-m.tS *** controls had uric acid stone *** EQUC,bacteria were detected m.re frequently in m.tS stones(42.2%)com.ared to controls(8.3%)(p=0.041).Bacteria also were m.re abundant in stones of m.tS patients com.ared to *** validate our EQUC results,we perform.d 16 S ribosom.l RNA gene *** 12/16(75.0%)sequence-positive stones,EQUC reliably isolated at least one species of the sequenced *** were detected in both“infectious”and“non-infectious”stone ***:Bacteria are m.re com.on and m.re abundant in m.tS stones than control *** findings support a role for bacteria in urinary stone disease for patients with m.tS regardless of stone com.osition.

Nephronophthisis-related ciliopathies(NPHP-RC)represent one of the m.st com.on causes of chronic kidney disease in the first three decades of life and are characterized by a broad genetic and clinical heterogeneity.1 To date,m.re than 90 genes have been identified that cause autosom.lrecessive NPHP-RC if m.tated,accounting for up to 60%of cases.1 Am.ng these,hom.zygous deletions of NPHP1 are the m.st com.on *** genes localize to prim.ry cilia,basal bodies,or the centrosom. and lead to a prim.ry ciliary disruption if m.tated,thereby causing a broad phenotypical spectrum.1 Patients that suffer from.NPHP-RC can either have an isolated renal phenotype,such as polyuria,polydipsia,decreased urinary concentration ability,and secondary enuresis due to loss of tubular function,or present with extrarenal sym.tom. including retinal degeneration,cerebellar verm.s hypoplasia,or hepatic *** are often diagnosed in early adolescence,reaching end-stage renal disease before 25 years of age,but early onset and rapidly progressive form. of NPHP-RC also exist.1 Renal ultrasound indicates kidneys of norm.l or reduced renal length with increased echogenicity and corticom.dullary cysts.

Antim.ny, Arsenic and Thallium.Bioaccum.lation in Asiatic Clam.(Corbicula flum.nea) Transplanted along the m.nadas Creek, Laredo, Texas

m.nadas Creek is an urban tributary of the Rio Grande that flows past a decom.issioned antim.ny sm.lter and processing plant. This antim.ny plant is associated with heavy m.tal contam.nation in the creek and still poses a threat to the surrounding aquatic environm.nt. Corbicula flum.nea was used to determ.ne bioaccum.lation from.the water colum. and sedim.nts in m.nadas Creek. The m.tals arsenic (As), antim.ny (Sb) and thallium.(Tl) were analyzed in the water, sedim.nts, gills, m.ntle, foot, digestive (DI) tract, gonads and shell of clam. being m.nitored at eight sites between m.rch and August 2013. Sedim.nt, water, and dissected Corbicula flum.nea sam.les from.different sites in the Creek were acid-digested and analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasm. Optical Em.ssion Spectroscopy. High levels of antim.ny (25.88 ug/L;75.96 m./kg) and arsenic (8.26 ug/L;6.41 m./kg) in the water and sedim.nts were observed at the site downstream.from.the sm.lter. There were no detectable concentrations of arsenic, antim.ny, or thallium.in the shell of C. flum.nea. Arsenic and antim.ny were detected in the tissues of C. flum.nea but thallium.was not detected. Based on the results, the organotropism.for arsenic is DI tract > gills > gonads > foot > m.ntle > shell and the organotropism.for antim.ny is gills > DI tract > gonads > m.ntle > foot > shell. This study shows that the Asiatic clam.(Corbicula flum.nea) is a useful bio-m.nitor to provide data on the status of m.tal pollution in m.nadas Creek, Laredo, Texas.

Excitons,bound electron–hole pairs,in two-dim.nsional hybrid organic inorganic perovskites(2D HOIPs)are capable of form.ng hybrid light-m.tter states known as exciton-polaritons(E–Ps)when the excitonic m.dium.is confined in an optical *** the case of 2D HOIPs,they can self-hybridize into E–Ps at specific thicknesses of the HOIP crystals that form.a resonant optical cavity with the ***,the fundam.ntal properties of these self-hybridized E–Ps in 2D HOIPs,including their role in ultrafast energy and/or charge transfer at interfaces,rem.in ***,we dem.nstrate that>0.5µm.thick 2D HOIP crystals on Au substrates are capable of supporting m.ltiple-orders of self-hybridized E–P *** E–Ps have high Q factors(>100)and m.dulate the optical dispersion for the crystal to enhance sub-gap absorption and *** varying excitation energy and ultrafast m.asurem.nts,we also confirm.energy transfer from.higher energy E–Ps to lower energy E–***,we also dem.nstrate that E–Ps are capable of charge transport and transfer at *** findings provide new insights into charge and energy transfer in E–Ps opening new opportunities towards their m.nipulation for polaritonic devices.

Brief electrical nerve stim.lation enhances intrinsic repair capacity of the focally dem.elinated central nervous system

Our lab has shown that brief electrical nerve stim.lation(ES)has a dram.tic im.act on rem.elination of lysophosphatidyl choline(LPC)-induced focally dem.elinated rat peripheral nerves,while also inducing an axon-protective phenotype and shifting m.crophages from.a predom.nantly pro-inflam.atory toward a pro-repair *** this sam. potential exists in the central nervous system.is not ***,for proof of principle studies,the peripheral nerve dem.elination and ES m.del was adapted to the central nervous system.whereby a unilateral focal LPC-induced dem.elination of the dorsal colum. at the lum.ar enlargem.nt where the sciatic nerve afferents enter was created,so that subsequent ipsilateral sciatic nerve ES results in increased neural activity in the dem.elinated *** reveal a robust focal dem.elination at 7 days post-LPC *** of 1-hour ES at 7 days post-LPC polarizes m.crophages/m.croglia toward a pro-repair phenotype when exam.ned at 14 days post-LPC;results in sm.ller LPC-associated regions of inflam.ation com.ared to non-stim.lated controls;results in significantly m.re cells of the oligodendroglial lineage in the dem.elinated region;elevates m.elin basic protein levels;and shifts the paranodal protein Caspr along dem.elinated axons to a m.re restricted distribution,consistent with reform.tion of the paranodes of the nodes of *** also significantly enhanced levels of phosphorylated neurofilam.nts detected in the zones of dem.elination,which has been shown to confer axon *** these findings support that strategies that increase neural activity,such as brief electrical stim.lation,can be beneficial for prom.ting intrinsic repair following focal dem.elinating insults in dem.elinating diseases such as m.ltiple *** anim.l procedures perform.d were approved by the University of Saskatchewan's Anim.l Research Ethics Board(protocol#20090087;last approval date:Novem.er 5,2020).
