Five wild plant species belonging to different families (Chenopodium album, Plantago major, Elytrigia elongata, Filipendula ulmaria and Nigella sativa) widely spread in Russian Federation and the former USSR were evaluated for their ability to inhibit growth of two important human food-borne pathogens (Escherichia coli O157:H7 and listeria monocytogenes strain EGD-e) and eight plant pathogens (Alternaria alternata, Alternaria tenuissima, Bipolaris sorokiniana, Stagonospora nodorum, Fusarium solani, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium culmorum and Phytophtora infestans). To isolate biologically active compounds from seeds, a step-wise procedure including extraction with hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol, and 10% acetic acid followed by reversed-phase HPlC was developed. Using disc-diffusion assay, the highest activity against E. coli O157:H7 was observed with extracts from F. ulmaria (hexane and ethyl acetate extracts and the unbound RP-HPlC fraction) and P. major (ethyl acetate extract and the unbound RP-HPlC fraction);E. elongate (the unbound RP-HPlC fraction) was less active. The extracts from P. major and E. elongate (the unbound RP-HPlC fractions) were equally highly active against l. monocytogenes, while those of F. ulmaria (the unbound RP-HPlC fraction) and N. sativa (hexane and ethyl acetate extracts) were less active against this pathogen. The dynamics of l. monocytogenes EGD-е and E. coli O157:H7 growth in the presence of two most potent extracts (RP-HPlC-unbound fractions of P. major and E. elongate and the hexane extract of F. ulmaria) was studied.

Analysis of the frequencies of chromosomes carrying various classes of porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERVs) and combinations of these classes was performed in the swine species Sus scrofa l. by using maps constructed in two principal component coordinates. Four population clusters can be recognized in the maps. Cluster 1 is formed by wild boars,cluster 2 by domestic meat breeds, cluster 3 by meat-and-lard (universal) breeds, and cluster 4 by miniature pigs. The maps indicate that modern domesticated swine meat breeds are the closest to the wild type. Meat-and-lard domestic swine breeds are more distant from wild boars, and miniature pigs are diverged the most. The maps showed that microevolution processes associated with PERV carriership frequency had two basic dimensions, or vectors: the vector of fat deposition variation and the “minus” selection vector (determination of commercial traits). Thus, PERVs may cause variation in pig physiology.

AIM:To describe our single-centre experience in liver transplantation(lT)with the infusion of high perioperative thymoglobulin *** optimal dosage and timing of thymoglobulin[antithymocyte globulin(ATG)]administration during lT remains *** release syndrome,haemolytic anaemia,thrombocytopenia,neutropenia,fever and serum sickness are potential adverse effects associated with ATG ***:Between December 2009 and December 2010,16 adult non-randomized patients(ATG group),receiving a liver graft from a deceased donor,received an intraoperative infusion(4-6 h infusion)of thymoglobulin(3 mg/kg,ATG:Thymoglobuline).These patients were compared(case control approach)with 16 patients who had a liver transplant without ATG treatment(control group)to evaluate the possible effects of intraoperative ATG *** matching parameters were:Sex,recipient age(±5 years),lT indication including viral status,MElD score(±5 points),international normalized ratio and platelet count(as close as possible).The exclusion criteria for both groups included the following:Multi-organ or living donor transplant,immunosuppressive therapy before transplantation,contraindications to the administration of any thymocyte globulin,human immunodeficiency virus seropositivity,thrombocytopenia[plateletl]or leukopenia[white blood cellsl].The perioperative side effects(haemodynamic alterations,core temperature variations,colloids and crystalloids requirements,and surgical time)possibly related to ATG infusion and the thromboelastographic(TEG)evaluation of the ATG effects on coagulation,blood loss and blood product transfusion were analysed during the operation and the first three postoperative ***:Intraoperative ATG administration was associated with longer surgical procedures[560±88 min vs 480±83 min(control group),P=0.013],an intraoperative core temperature more than 37℃(50%of ATG patients vs 6.2%of control patients,P=0.015),major intraoperative bloo

AIM To evaluate the effect of a 12-mo supervised aerobic and resistance training, on renal function and exercise capacity compared to usual care *** Ninety-nine kidney transplant recipients(KTRs) were assigned to interventional exercise(Group A; n = 52) and a usual care cohort(Group B; n = 47). Blood and urine chemistry, exercise capacity, muscular strength, anthropometric measures and health-related quality of life(HRQo l) were assessed at baseline, and after 6 and 12 mo. Group A underwent a supervised training three times per week for 12 mo. Group B received only general recommendations about home-based physical *** Eighty-five KTRs completed the study(Group A, n = 44; Group B, n = 41). After 12 mo, renal function remained stable in both groups. Group A significantly increased maximum workload(+13 W, P = 0.0003), V'O2 peak(+3.1 ml/kg per minute, P = 0.0099), muscular strength in plantar flexor(+12 kg, P = 0.0368), height in the countermovement jump(+1.9 cm, P = 0.0293) and decreased in Body Mass Index(-0.5 kg/m^2, P = 0.0013). HRQo l significantly improved in physical function(P = 0.0019), physical-role limitations(P = 0.0321) and social functioning scales(P = 0.0346). Noimprovements were found in Group *** Twelve-month of supervised aerobic and resistance training improves the physiological variables related to physical fitness and cardiovascular risks without consequences on renal function. Recommendations alone are not sufficient to induce changes in exercise capacity of KTRs. Our study is an example of collaborative working between transplant centres, sports medicine and exercise facilities.
