First characterization of endophytic Corynespora cassiicola isolates with variant cassiicolin genes recovered from rubber trees in Brazil

Corynespora cassiicola is the causal agent of Corynespora Leaf Fall(CLF)*** is one of the most important fungal diseases of rubber trees in Asia and Africa but disease outbreaks have not been reported in South ***,a small cysteine-rich glycoprotein secreted by the pathogenic *** isolate CCP,was previously identified as a potential disease effector in rubber ***,the cassiicolin-encoding gene(Cas1)was characterized and shown to be expressed in the early phase of *** this study,we investigated whether previously undetected strains of *** are present in South American rubber plantations by examining the fungal endophyte population found in asymptomatic rubber tree *** isolates were identified as *** encoding new forms of the cassiicolin precursor protein(Cas3 and Cas4)were identified from these *** of four isolates were able to induce symptoms on the cultivar they were isolated from in a detached leaf assay,with different kinetics and *** isolate had the same pathogenicity profile as the pathogenic isolate CCP;the other two isolates developed symptoms late during the course of infection,suggesting saprotrophic ***,no Cas3 or Cas4 transcripts could be detected upon inoculation with the endophytic isolates,whereas the reference gene Cas1 was expressed upon inoculation with the CCP *** work demonstrated that *** is present in South America in an endophytic form and that it may evolve from an endophytic to a saprophytic or even potentially pathogenic life style.

Folfirinox in elderly patients with pancreatic or colorectal cancer-tolerance and efficacy

AIM To study the tolerance and the efficiency of FOLFIRINOX in elderly patients diagnosed with colorectal or pancreatic *** This retrospective study included elderly patients aged over 70 years of age treated at Georges-Francois Leclerc Center by FOLFIRINOX for histological proved colorectal or pancreatic cancer between January 2009 and January 2015. Chemotheapy regimen consisted of oxaliplatin(85 mg/m2 in over 120 min) followed by leucovorin(400 mg/m2 in over 120 min), with the addition, after 30 min of irinotecan(180 mg/m2 in over 90 min) then 5 fluorouracil(5FU)(400 mg/m2 administred intravenous bolus), followed by 5FU(2400 mg/m2 intraveinous infusion over 46 h) repeated every 2 wk. Geriatric parameters were recorded at the beginning. Toxicities were evaluated with the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events 4.03. Tumor response was evaluated by CT scan. Treatment continued until disease progression, unacceptable toxicities or patient *** Fifty-two patients aged from 70 to 87 years were treated by FOLFIRINOX, 34 had colorectal cancer and 18 had pancreatic cancer. Most of them were in good general condition, 82.7% had a 0-1 performance status and 61.5% had a Charlson Comorbidity Index valuated by RECIST criteria showed a controlled disease for 25 patients(48.1%), a stable disease for 13 and a partial response for 12 patients. Time under treatment was higher for colorectal cancer with a median time of 2.44 mo(95%CI: 1.61-3.25). Overall survival was 43.88 mo for colorectal cancer and 12.51 mo for pancreatic cancer. Effect of Pulsed Ultraviolet Light on the Total Phenol Content of Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) Fruit

The changes in total polyphenolics in elderberry (Sambucus nigra) following treatment with various doses of pulsed ultraviolet rays (UV) were investigated. Four pulsed UV durations (5, 10, 20, 30 seconds) at three energy dosages (4500, 6000, 11,000 J/m2/pulse) were considered for the research. All treated elderberry fruits were incubated for 24 h at room temperature (25℃) following treatment to ensure enough response duration for enhanced development of polyphenols by the berries. The highest increase in total phenolics around 50% was found with 11,000 J/m2/pulse for a 10 seconds treatment while nearly 40% increase in total phenolics was found at an energy dosage of 11,000 J/m2/pulse after 5 seconds exposure. Even though most of the treatments indicated an increase in total polyphenols, some treatment expressed a decrease in phenolics content when compared to untreated fruits.

Marine Species Introduced on the French Channel-Atlantic Coasts: A Review of Main Biological Invasions and Impacts

The impacts of anthropogenisation modify permanently the distribution patterns of brackish and marine species. Globalization leads to a rapid increase of the numbers of introduced species anywhere in the world. Biological invasions often result in significant losses in the economic value, biological diversity and function of invaded ecosystems. This review presents the main pathways of introduction of non-indigenous species and the main benthic taxonomic groups being established and/or invasive along the French Channel-Atlantic coasts. A focus is put on main invasive marine species in the intertidal and subtidal zones of Brittany (France), among macroalgae (Sargassum muticum, Grateloupia turuturu, Undaria pinnatifida, Codium fragile and Gracilaria vermiculophylla), halophytes (Spartina alterniflora) and benthic invertebrates (Mollusks: Crepidula fornicata, Crassostrea gigas and Venerupis philippinarum). The species biology, introduction vectors, reproductive and dispersal capacities are considered, together with proliferation patterns along the Channel-Atlantic coasts. The ecological impacts of these species on the environment are also described, as well as the European regulations existing to limit alien species introduction and some examples of struggle against the invaders including eradication trials and biomass valorization. Last, the on-going impacts of global changes on alien species invasiveness along the Channel-Atlantic coasts are discussed.

The Rif Mountain located in Northern Morocco represents the westernmost extremity of the Peri-Mediterranean Alpine orogenic *** belt is classically subdivided into:1)Internal zones(or Internal Rif which is an allochthonous metamorphic domain known worldwide thanks to the presence of large peridotite outcrops);2)flysch zones(sediments corresponding to the original cover of the Maghrebian Tethys);and 3)External zones(or External Rif representing the North African margin remnants).The External Rif is itself subdivided into Prerif,Mesorif and Intrarif domains from the South to the North and is composed by Upper Triassic to Cenozoic sediments structured in a nappe *** rock intrusions were reported in this External Rif since the preliminary geological studies even if they were wrongly mapped as"granites".Later careful fieldwork and mapping studies specified nevertheless their gabbroic nature.A more recent petrological and geochemical study of a few outcrops of those gabbroic intrusions conducted the corresponding authors,encouraged by the presence of ultramafic rocks(Beni Malek serpentines)in the eastern part of the External Rif to consider those gabbros as oceanic and so,associated to"an ophiolitic suture".Nevertheless,a recent and extended survey on the architecture and the rifting history of the Mesozoic margin of the Maghrebian Tethys focusing mainly on the Mesorif domain favor another *** detailed petrography of those mafic intrusions(mainly gabbros+dolerites and rarely extrusive rocks);their geochemical fingerprints and mainly their geochronological data(ages around 200 Ma based on U-Pb zircon LA-ICP dating)all together indicate clearly that those mafic intrusions are rather a"newly discovered"manifestation of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province activity"CAMP"in the External Rif *** CAMP magmatism has been largely well described and characterized in all the other geological domains of Morocco(Anti-Atlas,High Atlas,Middle Atlas

Old-age inflammatory bowel disease onset:A different problem?

Inflammatory bowel disease （IBD） in patients aged 60 accounts for 10%-15% of cases of the disease. Diganostic methods are the same as for other age groups. Care has to be taken to distinguish an IBD colitis from other forms of colitis that can mimick clinically, endoscopically and even histologically the IBD entity. The clinical pattern in ulcerative colitis （UC） is proctitis and left-sided UC, while granulomatous colitis with an inflammatory pattern is more common in Crohn’s disease （CD）. The treatment options are those used in younger patients, but a series of considerations related to potential pharmacological interactions and side effects of the drugs must be taken into account. The safety profile of conventional immunomodulators and biological therapy is acceptable but more data are required on the safety of use of these drugs in the elderly population. Biological therapy has risen question on the possibility of increased side effects, however this needs to be confirmed. Adherence to performing all the test prior to biologic treatment administration is very important. The overall response to treatment is similar in the different patient age groups but elderly patients have fewer recurrences. The number of hospitalizations in patients 65 years is greater than in younger group, accounting for 25% of all admissions for IBD. Mortality is similar in UC and slightly higher in CD, but significantly increased in hospitalized patients. Failure of medicaltreatment continues to be the most common indication for surgery in patients aged 60 years. Age is not considered a contraindication for performing restorative proctocolectomy with an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis. However, incontinence evaluation should be taken into account an individualized options should be considered

Generalist versusSpecialist Herbivores on the Invasive Senecio inaequidensand a Native Related Species: What Makes the Difference?

We compared herbivory pressure in the native Jacobaea vulgaris (formely Senecio jacobaea) and the alien invasive S. inaequidens in sites where they co-occur in Belgium. We predicted that the alien species experiences relaxed herbivory pressure by specialist herbivores (enemy release hypothesis ERH) whereas it is still attacked by generalist herbivores. Impacts of two generalist (gastropods and rabbits) and one specialist (the caterpillar Tyria jacobaeae) herbivores were assessed with field observations and exclusion experiments. The generalist herbivores had a higher impact on the biomass and survival of the seedlings of the alien S. inaequidens than on the native J. vulgaris. On the contrary, the specialist Tyria jacobaeae attacked exclusively the adults of the native species, supporting one of the main predictions of the ERH. These results are discussed in relation to differences in pyrrolizidine alkaloid profiles between the two species.

Comparison of the Bacterial Microbiota in a Bale of Collected Cardboard Determined by 454 Pyrosequencing and Clone Library

Biofouling, the accumulation of microorganisms, is a major problem in paper mills processing paper and cardboard. This leads to the production of lower quality recycled products. Several studies have focused on the microbial content in the paper mill and the final products. Our aim was to determine the microbial biota in a bale of collected cardboard prior to entering the paper mill. Total genomic DNA was isolated and analyzed using two different methods for comparison purposes: 454 pyrosequencing and clone library. A total of 3268 V6-V8 454 pyrosequencing reads and 322 cloned V6-V8 16S rRNA nucleotide sequences were obtained. Both methods showed the presence of three major bacterial genera: Bacillus, Solibacillus and Paenibacillus, all members of the spore-forming phylum Firmicutes. Pyrosequencing, however, revealed a richer and more diverse bacterial community than clone library. It showed the presence of additional minor Firmicute genera and of a small number of Proteobacteria. The sorting at the recycling plant, the storing, and the processing at the paper mill, the end uses, will all contribute to the bacterial microbiota present in a bale of collected cardboard as revealed here.

The Impact of Cooking of Beef on the Supply of Heme and Non-Heme Iron for Humans

Red meat contains a high proportion of heme iron (HI) which is absorbed at a far higher extent into the blood than the non-heme iron (NHI) found in plants. However, HI and NHI are expelled in the juice during cooking while a fraction of HI is converted into NHI, thus decreasing iron bioavailability. This paper relies on experiments and the use of modeling. The kinetics of the conversion of HI into NHI was measured and modeled in juice extracted from uncooked beef meat, and beef cubes were cooked to measure the variations of HI/NHI contents. In meat, HI/NHI ratio decreased from 2.0 when it was raw to less than 1.0 for the longest heat treatments and highest temperatures. The model was used to predict the effect of cooking conditions on the variations of the iron supplied by beef meat. The lowest contribution of meat to iron supply was found for under-pressure cooking at temperatures above 100°C.
