Shortly after their inception, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors(SNSPDs) became the leading quantum light detection technology. With the capability of detecting single-photons with near-unity efficiency,high time resolution, low dark count rate, and fast recovery time, SNSPDs outperform conventional single-photon detection techniques. However, detecting lower energy single photons(70% system detection efficiency(SDE) at 2 μm and sub-15 ps timing jitter. Furthermore, detectors from the same batch demonstrated unity internal detection efficiency at 3 μm and 80% internal efficiency at 4 μm, paving the road for an efficient mid-infrared single-photon detection technology with unparalleled time resolution and without mK cooling requirements. We also systematically studied the dark count rates(DCRs) of our detectors coupled to different types of mid-infrared optical fibers and blackbody radiation filters. This offers insight into the trade-off between bandwidth and DCRs for mid-infrared SNSPDs. To conclude, this paper significantly extends the working wavelength range for SNSPDs made from polycrystalline NbTiN to 1.5–4 μm, and we expect quantum optics experiments and applications in the mid-infrared range to benefit from this far-reaching technology.

Many recent studies of ecological speciation have focused on “magic trait” scenarios, in which divergent selection on viability traits leads inextricably to corresponding divergence in mechanisms, especially mate recognition systems, that facilitate assortative mating. Speciation however may also proceed via other scenarios, such as when populations experience directly selected or random divergence in mate recognition systems. The relative contributions of magic trait versus other scenarios for speciation remain virtually unexplored. The present study aims to test the relative contribution of the magic trait scenario in the divergence of populations of the medium ground finchGeospiza fortisof Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos. First, we assess differences inG. fortissong between a northern population (Borrero Bay) and a southeastern population (El Garrapatero), differences that we propose (along with other within-island geographic song variations) have arisen via scenarios that do not involve a magic trait scenario. Pairwise comparisons of raw and composite (PC) song parameters, as well as discriminant functions analyses, reveal significant patterns of song divergence between sites. Second, we test the ability of territorial males at Borrero Bay to discriminate songs from the two sites. We find thatG. fortismales can discriminate within-island song variants, responding more strongly to local than to “foreign” songs, along 3 raw and 1 composite response measures. Third, we compare these findings to prior data sets on song divergence and discrimination in Santa CruzG. fortis. These comparisons suggest that song divergence and discrimination are shaped less strongly by geographic sources than by morphological (beak-related) sources. We thus argue that interpopulation song divergence and discrimination, fundamental elements of assortative mating in Darwin’s finches, can be fostered in early stages of divergence under magic trait as well as alternative scenarios for speciatio

The intraosseous benign notochordal cell tumor (BNCT) is an intravertebral lesion derived from notochordal tissue. The notochord develops in humans during the third week of embryonic life and persists in adults as the nucleus pulposus of the vertebral disks. The most common locations of such tumors are the saccrococcygeal region and the skull base. Most tumors are asymptomatic and small. Magnetic resonance imaging is useful in their detection and precise localization. Histologically, these lesions consist of sheets of adipocyte-like vacuolated or less vacuolated eosinophilic tumor cells with eccentrically located round nuclei without myxoid matrix. The tumor cells express the epithelial markers, vimentin and S100 protein. Main differential diagnosis is chordoma. Intraosseous BNCT do not require any surgical management and should be recognized by pathologists to prevent unnecessary radical surgery. These lesions should be followed-up with conventional MRI.

As we know more about Zika virus(ZIKV), as well as its linkage to birth defects(microcephaly) and autoimmune neurological syndromes, we realize the importance of developing an efficient vaccine against it. Zika virus disease has affected many countries and is becoming a major public health concern. To deal with the infection of ZIKV, plenty of experiments have been done on selection of neutralizing antibodies that can target the envelope(E) protein on the surface of the virion. However, the existence of antibody-dependent enhancement(ADE) effect might limit the use of them as therapeutic candidates. In this review, we classify the neutralizing antibodies against ZIKV based on the epitopes and summarize the resolved structural information on antibody/antigen complex from X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy(cryo-EM), which might be useful for further development of potent neutralizing antibodies and vaccines toward clinical use.

In adults, adipose tissue is abundant and can be easily sampled using liposuction. Largely involved in obesity and associated metabolic disorders, it is now described as a reservoir of immature stromal cells. These cells, called adipose-derived stromal cells (ADSCs) must be distinguished from the crude stromal vascular fraction (SVF) obtained after digestion of adipose tissue. ADSCs share many features with mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow, including paracrine activity, but they also display some specific features, including a greater angiogenic potential. Their angiogenic properties as well as their paracrine activity suggest a putative tumor-promoting role for ADSCs although contradictory data have been published on this issue. Both SVF cells and ADSCs are currently being investigated in clinical trials in several fields (chronic inflammation, ischemic diseases, etc. ). Apart from a phase Ⅲ trial on the treatment of fistula,most of these are in phaseⅠand use autologous cells. In the near future, the end results of these trials should provide a great deal of data on the safety of ADSC use.

Dear Editor,Infertility affects about 15%of couples of childbearing age.i About half of these cases can be attributed predominantly to a male factor,such as a quantitative or qualitative impairment in *** etiology of male infertility is related to anatomic,genetic,and environmental causes,being sometimes multifactorial and of unknown or idiopathic *** present,genetic screening for nonobstructive azoospermia(NOA)is generally limited to karyotyping for the identification of chromosome abnormalities such as 47,XXY,46,X,der(X)t(X;Y)(p22.3;p11.2),chromosome rearrangements,and Y chromosome ***-genome analyses have shown that over 100 gene variants are associated with a male infertility phenotype,and the list continues to grow;hence,a large number of genes are involved in *** continuing identification of genes responsible for male infertility in general and azoospermia,in particular,is a major challenge in both research and the diagnosis ofmale infertility.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a late-onset neurodegenerative disease selectively affecting motor neurons, leading to pro-gressive paralysis. Although most cases are sporadic,-10% are familial. Similar proteins are found in aggregates in sporadicand familial ALS, and over the last decade, research has been focused on the underlying nature of this common ***, TDP-43 inclusions are found in almost all ALS patients, while Fus inclusions have been reported in some familial ALSpatients. Both TDP-43 and FUS possess ‘low-complexity domains' (LCDs) and are considered as ‘intrinsically disordered proteins',which form liquid droplets in vitro due to the weak interactions caused by the LCDs. Dysfunctional ‘liquid-lquid phase separa-tion'(LLPS) emerged as a new mechanism linking AlS-related proteins to pathogenesis. Here, we review the current state ofknowledge on ALS-related gene products associated with a proteinopathy and discuss their status as lLPS proteins. n addition,we highlight the therapeutic potential of targeting LLPS for treating ALS.

Development of a Training Textbook for Countermeasures to “Verbal Abuse, Physical Assault, and Harassment in Pediatric Medical Settings”

Background: Recently, abuse, assault, and harassment in pediatric medical settings have become more serious. We extracted typical problems from a nationwide simultaneous survey on abuse in the pediatric medical field and developed a training textbook to simulate or discuss these issues with colleagues. This study aimed to confirm the validity and usability of the contents of this training textbook. Methods: The textbook was mailed to the heads of 51 medical institutions affiliated with the Society of Ambulatory and General Pediatrics of Japan (SAGPJ) and the participants of the SAGPJ online workshop, who were asked to evaluate the textbook using a three-point scale to answer the following questions and provide opinions and impressions about the textbook. Q1. Do you think the whole content and structure of this textbook are useful? Q2. Would you use this textbook as a training textbook for all staff at your facility? A simple tabulation was performed on the evaluation using a three-point scale, while content analysis was performed on the opinions and impressions of the participants. Results: In response to Q1 and Q2, all 63 staff members from 55 facilities answered “3: Yes.” Opinions and impressions on the training textbook included “I think it can be used for workplace training” and “it is useful for exchanging various opinions among staff members and gaining a common opinion.” Conclusion: We developed a training textbook on abuse, assault, and harassment in pediatric medical settings based on a nationwide survey and confirmed the validity and usability of its contents.
