Assessment of liver ablation using cone beam computed tomography

AIM: To investigate the feasibility and accuracy of cone beam computed tomography(CBCT) in assessing the ablation zone after liver tumor ***: Twenty-three patients(17 men and 6 women, range: 45-85 years old, mean age 65 years) with malignant liver tumors underwent ultrasoundguided percutaneous tumor ablation [radiofrequency(n = 14), microwave(n = 9)] followed by intravenous contrast-enhanced CBCT. Baseline multidetector computed tomography(MDCT) and peri-procedural CBCT images were compared. CBCT image quality was assessed as poor, good, or excellent. Image fusion was performed to assess tumor coverage, and quality of fusion was rated as bad, good, or excellent. Ablation zone volumes on peri-procedural CBCT and post-procedural MDCT were compared using the nonparametric paired Wilcoxon ***: Rate of primary ablation effectiveness was 100%. There were no complications related to ablation. Local tumor recurrence and new liver tumors were found 3 mo after initial treatment in one patient(4%). The ablation zone was identified in 21/23(91.3%) patients on CBCT. The fusion of baseline MDCT and peri-procedural CBCT images was feasible in all patients and showed satisfactory tumor coverage(at least 5-mm margin). CBCT image quality was poor, good, and excellent in 2(9%), 8(35%), and 13(56%), patients respectively. Registration quality between periprocedural CBCT and post-procedural MDCT images was good to excellent in 17/23(74%) patients. The median ablation volume on peri-procedural CBCT and post-procedural MDCT was 30 cm3(range: 4-95 cm3) and 30 cm3(range: 4-124 cm3), respectively(P-value > 0.2). There was a good correlation(r = 0.79) between the volumes of the two techniques. CONCLUSION: Contrast-enhanced CBCT after tumor ablation of the liver allows early assessment of the ablation zone.

First steps on technological and genetic improvement of European abalone (<i>Haliotis tuberculata</i>) based on investigations in full-sib families

The European abalone Haliotis tuberculata is of economical importance in Europe, and recently in France where most of the consumed abalones remained wild animals fished on the coast. Recently, the creation of hatcheries allowed the production of cultured animals, and aquaculture is in progress. To optimize selective breeding programs, different studies were performed on adults and on their progenies. First, ten adult families, assumed to be bi-parental and produced in 2007 were analyzed. As these families were developed at the beginning of the hatchery production, the parentage of the individual necessitated to be tested. The progenies parentage assignment was done by using eight microsatellite DNA loci. In fine, the heritability was estimated from the analysis of variance of seven full-sib families which include from 23 to 27 progenies. Heritability estimate was the higher for length, width and weight (0.37, 0.29 and 0.40 respectively). A high correlation was also shown between these heritable traits which can be useful during animal breeding. Shell color traits were also analyzed, using image treatment procedure. Two traits were selected according to the global color of the shell: red color and hue. The distribution of these traits evidenced a polygenic genetic control of shell color and measure of heritability evidenced a high to medium value for red color (Cr) and Hue(H) (0.33 and 0.20 respectively). No correlation was shown between growth and this parameter. In a second time, juveniles families produced in 2010 were studied from parents issued of the first selection. A correlation between size and density at juvenile stage was established but a statistical analysis demonstrated, by using density as co-variable a significant effect of family on size. In these conditions, growth is highly heritable (0.74). This study is a first step toward the use of genetic markers for selection, but also a step toward the breeding improvement of European abalone.

A Placebo-Controlled Study Demonstrates the Long-Lasting Anti-Aging Benefits of a Cream Containing Retinol, DihydroxyMethylChromone (DMC) and Hyaluronic Acid

Retinol is an ingredient used in cosmetic products for reducing the appearance of the signs of aging and photo-damage. Currently, most of these products contain 0.1% of retinol. However, at this concentration, some irritation can occur. We have evaluated in vitro and in a clinical study the potential efficacy of a combination of actives to improve the facial skin aging signs while using low concentration of retinol. We demonstrated, in vitro, that a chromone derivative, 5,7-di-hydroxy-2-methyl chromone (DMC), is able to enhance the collagen synthesis in culture of normal human dermal fibroblasts. The enhancement of retinol anti-wrinkle efficacy by DMC was confirmed in a small scale clinical trial. Specifically, a product associating low concentration of retinol (0.04%) and DMC (0.1%) in combination with low molecular weight hyaluronic acid fragments (50,000 Dalton of average molecular weight) has been applied topically for 8 weeks. Clinical results show significant improvement of various signs of facial skin aging such as wrinkles, pigmentary spots, tone unevenness, dullness and the overall photo-damage score. Improvements were still visible 4 weeks after the cessation of the test product application. This study demonstrates that significant lasting improvement of facial skin aging can be obtained with well tolerated low concentration of retinol when adequately formulated with other anti-aging ingredients.

Magnetic resonance imaging may predict deep remission in patients with perianal fistulizing Crohn's disease

AIM To evaluate the imaging course of Crohn's disease(CD) patients with perianal fistulas on long-term maintenance anti-tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α therapy and identify predictors of deep *** All patients with perianal CD treated with anti-TNF-α therapy at our tertiary care center were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) and clinical assessment. Two MR examinations were performed: at initiation of anti-TNF-α treatment and then at least 2 years after. Clinical assessment(remission, response and non-response) was based on Present's criteria. Rectoscopic patterns, MRI Van Assche score, and MRI fistula activity signs(T2 signal and contrast enhancement) were collected for the two MR examinations. Fistula healing was defined as the absence of T2 hyperintensity and contrast enhancement on MRI. Deep remission was defined as the association of both clinical remission, absence of anal canal ulcers and healing on MRI. Characteristics and imaging patterns of patients with and without deep remission were compared by univariate and multivariate *** Forty-nine consecutive patients(31 females and 18 males) were included. They ranged in age from 14-70 years(mean, 33 years). MRI and clinical assessment were performed after a mean period of exposure to anti-TNF-α therapy of 40 ± 3.7 mo. Clinical remission, response and non-response were observed in 53.1%, 20.4%, and 26.5% of patients, respectively. Deep remission was observed in 32.7% of patients. Among the 26 patients in clinical remission, 10 had persisting inflammation of fistulas on MRI(T2 hyperintensity, n = 7; contrast enhancement, n = 10). Univariate analysis showed that deep remission was associated with the absence of rectal involvement and the absence of switch of anti-TNF-α treatment or surgery requirement. In this work, manufacturing tools for thermoplastic (TP) composites have been developed. The chosen process involves the stacking alternately of oriented dry fabrics and TP films and does not use semi-products in order to reduce material costs. This study was specifically directed towards optimizing the impregnation of continuous glass and carbon fibres reinforcing two TP amorphous matrices, the polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) and polyetherimide (PEI), to obtain semi-finished products employed for aeronautical structures. The impregnation quality of inter and intra-yarns is analyzed and validated by optical and scanning micrographic observations conducted with an optical and a Scanning Electron Microscopies (SEM), respectively. The study showed that besides the process parameters and porosity distribution in the core of warp yarns, the impregnation quality depends on the surface properties of constituents. Desizing treatment has been carried out to improve the wettability of fibres by the TP matrices.

Soil moisture content as a predictor of soil disturbance caused by wheeled forest harvesting machines on soils of the Western Carpathians

Limiting surface soil disturbance caused by forest harvesting machines is an important task and is influenced by the selection of efficient and reliable predictors of such disturbance. Our objective was to determine whether soil moisture content affects soil load bearing capacity and the formation of ruts. Measurements were conducted in six forest stands where various machines operated. We measured the formation of ruts along skid trails in connection with varying soil moisture content. Soil moisture content was determined through the gravimetric sampling method. Our results showed that severe（rut depth16–25 cm） to very severe disturbance（rut depth [26 cm）occurred in forest stands where the instantaneous soil moisture exceeded its plasticity limits defined through Atterberg limits. Atterberg limits of soil plasticity ranged from 26 to 32 % in individual stands. Regression and correlation analysis confirmed a moderately strong relationship（R = 0.52; p ／ 0.05） between soil moisture content and average rut depth. This confirmed that soil moisture is a suitable and effective predictor of soil disturbance.

Staged liver resection for colorectal metastases:a valuable strategy or a waste of time?

BACKGROUND:The use of staged liver resections for colorectal metastases has been increasing in recent *** aim of this study was to determine the practices and outcomes of those surgeons attending the Australia and New Zealand Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary Association(ANZHPBA)meeting in 2008 who perform staged resections. METHODS:A questionnaire was sent to all members of the ANZHPBA and the international faculty who were invited to attend the annual meeting held in Coolum,Queensland, Australia in October 2008. RESULTS:There were 30 responses from 7 centres across the UK,Germany and ***-eight patients completed *** study population was predominantly male (n=20,67%),with an average age of 59.4 *** patients had bilobar disease.A right-sided first resection was planned in 39%of *** percent of patients underwent portal vein embolization prior to first resection.A second operation was performed at an average of 2.8 months from the first ***,50%(n=14)of patients eventually achieved a complete(R0)staged *** complications after the first resection were seen in 32%patients(n=9).Twenty- three patients underwent a second liver ***-five complications after the second resection were present in 57% (n=13). CONCLUSIONS:Two-stage liver resections are beneficial if both stages are completed and an R0 resection is achieved. While there is increased morbidity and mortality,we believe that staged liver resection for colorectal metastases is a valuable strategy in selected cases.

Melanin is a biopolymer implicated in the protection of cellular membranes and DNA produced by melanocytes. This pigment has a dual role and should be considered as a photo-protector and as a photosensitizer due to its interaction with UV. The design of multifunctional and biologically responsive coatings is of major interest in modern biomaterials science. The aim of this study is not only to characterize the deposition of multilayered polyelectrolytes films made from polydopamine particles and polyamines like poly-(L-lysine hydrobromide) (PLL), but also to evaluate melanoma cells activity in terms of proliferation and their capacity to stimulate melanin secretion. One could expect that the presence of a melanin like material in the film may have a positive or a negative feedback on the melanin biosynthesis and consequently on melanoma development. Some comparisons are also done with pure polydopamine grains in suspension in the cell culture medium, to investigate if the immobilization of the polydopamine grains has an influence on their bioactivity.

Double ischemic ileal stenosis secondary to mesenteric injury after blunt abdominal trauma

The authors describe a rare case in which blunt abdominal trauma resulted in mesenteric injury with delayed double ischemic ileal stenosis. Abdominal computed tomography demonstrated stenotic ileal loop with mural thickening. At surgery, a double stenotic bowel loop was found adjacent to a healed defect in the mesentery. Histological examination of the two resected segments showed fibrotic and ischemic lesions within the mesentery. Ischemic intestinal stenosis from mesenteric injury should be considered in the differential diagnosis in patients suffering from intestinal occlusion with a history of blunt abdominal ***.
