Effect of Wetting-Drying Cycles on Redistribution of Lead in Some Semi-Arid Zone Soils Spiked with a Lead Salt

Mobility and bioavailability of lead （Pb） could be affected considerably by soil physicochemical properties; however, less is known about the effect of Pb levels and aging time. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Pb levels and wetting-drying （WD） cycles on distribution and bioavailability of Pb in three semi-arid zone soils treated with different levels of Pb（NO3）2. Wetting-drying cycles simulated the actual field irrigation in the semi-arid soils. A soil with a long history of Pb contamination was also taken as a reference soil. The soils were spiked with various levels of Pb and incubated under WD cycles for 160 d. Sequential extractions and batch sorption experiments were performed to assess the fractionation of Pb in the spiked soils. Redistribution index （Uts） and reduced partitioning parameter （IR） were applied to semi-quantify the distribution of Pb in the spiked soils. A small amount of Pb sorbed was desorbed by the soils, indicating a strong and irreversible binding of Pb in the studied soils. Contribution of carbonate-bound （Car） and residual （Res） Pb fl＇actions to the total Pb of the soils was more than 97%. The Car, soluble plus exchangeable （SE）, and organic matter-bound （OMB） fractions of Pb were transferred to the Res fraction under the WD cycles. The IR and Uts values were influenced by Pb loading levels and WD; therefore, the Pb lability and/or redistribution pattern could semi-quantitatively be assessed via these parameters. At the end of the experiment, the Ia and Uts values for the Pb salt-spiked soils did not show the quasi- equilibrium state. The lability of Pb in the soils decreased with increasing incubation time and showed a strong dependence on Pb levels and soil chemical composition. WD cycles significantly affected the overall lability of Pb in soils through influencing the redistribution of Pb among solid-phase components.

Effects of bee propolis supplementation on glycemic control, lipid profile and insulin resistance indices in patients with type 2 diabetes： a randomized, double-blind clinical trial

BACKGROUND： Propolis, a natural resinous substance made by bees from material extracted from plants, flowers and bee＇s wax, has shown great therapeutic effects and been widely used in food and drug industries. Recently, some researchers have studied the effect of this substance in the treatment of diabetes. OBJECTIVE： The purpose of this trial was to determine the effect of bee propolis on glycemic contro serum lipid profile and insulin resistance indices in patients with type 2 diabetes （T2D）. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS： This randomized clinical trial involved 66 patients with T2D, which were randomly divided into two groups of intervention （IG） and placebo （PG）. IG received 300 mg three times a day for a total of 900 mg/d of propolis pills, while PG received similar pills, lacking propolis, on the same schedule for 12 weeks. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Fasting blood glucose （FBG）, hemoglobin Alc （HbAlc）, total cholestero （TC）, low-density lipoprotein （LDL）, high-density lipoprotein （HDL）, triglyceride （TG）, serum insulin and insulin resistance indices were the main outcome measures. RESULTS： The mean change in FBG between the IG （（17.76 ±27.72） mg/dL decrease） and the PG （（6.48 ± 42.77） mg/dL increase） was significantly different （P = 0.01）. Change in mean HbAlc had a similar pattern to FBG. The mean change in TC between the IG （（5.16± 43.80） mg/dL increase） and the PG （（28.9 ± 27.4） mg/dL increase） was also significantly different （P = 0.01）, showing the protective role of propolis against the increase in TC. The change in mean LDL was similar to mean TC. There was no significant difference in other lipids or insulin resistance indices between the two groups. Gender Sensitive STIs/HIV/AIDS Prevention Policies: A Qualitative Study

Background: The global incidence of STIs is rising. It is estimated that 499 million new cases of curable STIs occur every year. The existence of more than one million reported cases of STIs annually in Iran shows that addressing this issue must be a priority for Iranian health authorities. While recognition of the importance of gender issues to reproductive health (RH) programs has grown significantly in the past several years, major challenges remain in implementing gender-sensitive programs. Gender mainstreaming in Iranian reproductive health program is a relatively new issue, so this study aims to explore gender sensitive STIs/HIV/AIDS prevention policies. Method: This study employed a qualitative research design. Participants were health managers, health policy makers and reproductive health providers. They were selected purposefully and then continued by snowball sampling method. 43 semi-structured in-depth interviews with 37 key informants were done. All the interviews were recorded and transcribed. The data were analyzed by content analysis method. Trustworthiness of the data was achieved by using credibility, trans-ferability and conformability. Results: Key informants clearly explained the gender sensitive STIs/ HIV/AIDS prevention policies in three main categories: 1) advocacy, 2) collaboration between different sectors and 3) community empowerment to gender sensitive STIs/HIV/AIDS prevention programs. Conclusion: Changing gender neural STIs/HIV/AIDS prevention policy to more complete gender sensitive policy needs advocacy, collaboration of sectors and community empowerment.

Effectiveness of mindfulness based cognitive therapy on weight loss, improvement of hypertension and attentional bias to eating cues in overweight people

Objectives:Prevalence rates of overweight and obesity are dramatically ever-increasing across the ***,this study was to evaluate the effect of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy(MBCT)on weight loss,hypertension,and attentional bias towards food cues in a group of women affected with this ***:A total of 45 participants were selected out of women referring to the Nutrition and Diet Therapy Clinic affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences,Iran,and then randomized into three groups of *** first experimental group was subjected to an energy-restricted diet therapy together with MBCT during 8 sessions,the second group took the diet therapy alone,and the third group received no *** mass index(BMI),hypertension,and attentional bias towards food cues were correspondingly evaluated before,at the end,and four weeks after the completion of the ***:The results of this study revealed that MBCT,along with diet therapy,had been significantly more effective in weight loss,decrease in BMI,lower systolic blood pressure(SBP),and attentional bias towards food cues compared with the diet therapy alone(P≤0.01).MBCT had no significant impact on the decline in diastolic blood pressure(DBP)in participants in the follow-up ***:This study demonstrated that MBCT along with the conventional diet therapy was more effective in weight loss,decrease in BMI,hypertension control,as well as attentional bias towards food cues than the diet therapy alone.
