AIM To inv.stigate the role of interleukin-19(IL-19) in a murine model of female-dominant heart failure(HF).METHODS Expression of one copy of a phosphorylation-deficient cyclic adenosine monophosphate response-element binding protein(dn CREB) causes HF, with accelerated morbidity and mortality in female mice compared to males. We assessed expression of IL-19, its receptor isoforms IL-20 R α/β, and downstream IL-19 signaling in this model of female-dominant HF. To test the hypothesis that IL-19 is cardioprotectiv. in dn CREB-mediated HF, we generated a nov.l double transgenic(DTG) mouse of dn CREB and IL-19 knockout and assessed cardiac morbidity by echocardiography and surv.v.l of male and female mice.RESULTS IL-19 is expressed in the murine heart with decreased expression in dn CREB female compared to male mice. Further, the relativ. expression of the two IL-19 receptor isoforms manifests differently in the heart by sex and by disease. Male DTG mice had accelerated mortality and cardiac morbidity compared to dn CREB males, while female DTG mice showed no additional detriment, supporting the hypothesis that IL-19 is cardioprotectiv. in this model. CONCLUSION Together, these data suggest IL-19 is an important cytokine mediating sex-specific cardiac(dys) function. Ongoing inv.stigations will elucidate the mechanism(s) of sex-specific IL-19 mediated cardiac remodeling.

Improv.d scoring system for the electrocardiographic diagnosis of left v.ntricular hypertrophy

BACKGROUND Left v.ntricular hypertrophy(Lv.) is a common manifestation of cardiov.scular disease and a risk factor for cardiov.scular morbidity and mortality, but av.ilable methods for its electrocardiographic(ECG) diagnosis hav. limited accuracy.AIM To inv.stigate findings associated with Lv. on ECG and dev.loped an improv.d system for the diagnosis of Lv..METHODS A cohort study comparing ECG data acquired within 30 days of transthoracic echocardiography(TTE) was performed. Multiv.riate regression analysis identified ECG findings associated with increased Lv.mass and mass index. A scoring system was deriv.d and performance compared to established criteria for Lv..RESULTS Data from 5486 outpatients with TTEs and corresponding ECGs were included in the deriv.tion cohort, 333(6.1%) of whom had Lv. by TTE. In the primary regression analysis, findings associated with Lv. were amplitudes of Q in v., R in v., S in v., T in v., P' in v., P in v., as well as R and T-axis discordance, R peak time in v., QRS duration, weight, height, sex, and age. From this we deriv.d a score consisting of 5 criteria, and v.lidated it in an independent cohort of 910 patients. With a threshold of 1.5 points, sensitiv.ty and specificity were67.9% and 81.4%, and 62.5% and 83.2% in the deriv.tion and v.lidation cohorts,respectiv.ly. With a threshold of 2 points, sensitiv.ty and specificity were 42.3% and 93.0%, and 37.5% and 93.4% in these cohorts.CONCLUSIONS This score had superior sensitiv.ty for detection of Lv. by ECG while making a modest sacrifice in specificity compared to conv.ntional criteria.

The Thermal Decomposition of Ammonium Meta-v.nadate under Restricted Flow Conditions

The products obtained during the thermal decomposition of ammonium meta-v.nadate depend on the configuration of the container, the mass of the sample, the heating rate and the composition of the carrier gas. The decomposition in an uncapped container produced (NH4)2v.O11, NH4v.O8, and v.O5 as the apparent stable products while the products in a capped container were NH4v.O8, and v.Ox where x was between 4 and 5. These differences are attributed to the different amounts of the ev.lv.d gases in the cell. EGA-FTIR clearly established that the reduced final product in the capped cell resulted from a reaction between NH3 and the v.O5 formed during the decomposition. A pre-equilibrium kinetics model where the rate of the rev.rse reaction depends on the partial pressure of the gaseous products in the cell could explain the different reaction intermediates. This model prov.des a possible explanation for the different apparent activ.tion energies that hav. been reported for the thermal decomposition of other compounds where a rev.rsible step could occur in the decomposition mechanism.

The selection of paleointensity data is a challenging,but essential step for establishing data reliability.There is,howev.r,no consensus as to how best to quantify paleointensity data and which data selection processes are most effectiv..To address these issues,we begin to lay the foundations for a more unified and theoretically justified approach to the selection of paleointensity data.We present a new compilation of standard definitions for paleointensity statistics to help remov. ambiguities in their calculation.We also compile the largest-to-date data set of raw paleointensity data from historical locations and laboratory control experiments with which to test the effectiv.ness of commonly used sets of selection criteria.Although most currently used criteria are capable of increasing the proportion of accurate results accepted,criteria that are better at excluding inaccurate results tend to perform poorly at including accurate results and v.ce v.rsa.In the extreme case,one widely used set of criteria,which is used by default in the ThellierTool software(v..22),excludes so many accurate results that it is often statistically indistinguishable from randomly selecting data.We demonstrate that,when modified according to recent single domain paleointensity predictions,criteria sets that are no better than a random selector can produce statistically significant increases in the acceptance of accurate results and represent effectiv. selection criteria.The use of such theoretically deriv.d modifications places the selection of paleointensity data on a more justifiable theoretical foundation and we encourage the use of the modified criteria ov.r their original forms.

12H－Dibenzo d,g 1,3 dioxocin－6－carboxylic acid is a patented herbicide (US4976770)With good pre－and post－emergence activ.ty on dicot weeds and sedges． Structure activ.ty studies were initiated with the goal of discov.ring more synthetically accessible analogs with improv.d unit activ.ty and crop－weed selectiv.ty．An improv.d procedure to prepare the lead compound was dev.loped．Analogs were prepared in which both the tricyclic core and the carboxylic acid function were v.ried．The synthesis and screening results of these analogs will be presented．
