Rotav.rus gastroenteritis is a major public health concern globally, estimated to cause 215,000 deaths among children v.loping countries. In 2013, it was estimated that Nigeria was the second country with the highest number of rotav.rus deaths. Monitoring of circulating rotav.rus strains in Enugu, Nigeria is part of on-going rotav.rus surv.illance before the introduction of rotav.rus v.ccination. A total of 2694 stool samples were collected from enrolled under 5 years old children with diarrhoea between January 2011 and December 2016 and tested the v.rus using an antigen enzyme immunoassay. Randomly selected rotav.rus positiv. samples were further characterized by rotav.rus genotype methods to identify the G and P types circulating during the study period. Rotav.rus was detected in 1242 (46%) of the 2694 samples collected ov.r the six years period. Of these, 867 were randomly selected for genotyping. G and P types could be assigned for 832 samples (96%), while 31 (3.6%) could only be assigned either genotype G or P (partially typed) and 4 (0.4%) could not be assigned genotype G and P (untypeable). The most common G-genotypes detected during the entire study period were G12, G1 and G3 accounting for 27.6%, 21.0% and 16.3% respectiv.ly. Mixed G and P-genotypes were commonly detected. Ninety-one of the samples, representing 10.8% (91/839) had mixed G-genotype whilst 130 of the samples representing 15.2% (130/852) had mixed P-genotype. The most common P-genotypes detected were P[8], P[6] and P[4] representing 38.3%, 35.4% and 9.1% respectiv.ly. The predominant strain detected was G12P[8] (22.3%) followed by G3P[6] (14.5%), G1P[8] (9.2%) and G1P[6] (8.0%). These data are useful for making an informed decision about the introduction of rotav.rus v.ccine into the national routine immunization program and to monitor the impact of the v.ccine post licensure.

Effect of pineapple peel extract on total phospholipids and lipid peroxidation in brain tissues of rats

Objectiv.:To inv.stigate the ability of the methanolic extract of pineapple peel to attenuate alcohol-induced changes in total phospholipids and lipid peroxidation in brain tissues. Methods:Oxidativ. stress was induced by oral administration of ethanol(20%w/v. at a dosage of 5 mL/kg bw in *** 28 days of treatment,the rats were fasted ov.rnight and sacrificed by cerv.cal *** tissues were assayed for total phospholipid(TP) content and malondialdehyde(MDA).Results:Administration of alcohol significantly caused a reduction in TP *** with pineapple peel extract significantly increased the TP content. Significant high lev.ls of MDA was observ.d in alcohol-fed rats,treatment with pineapple peel extract significantly reduced the MDA ***:Results obtained from this study indicates that pineapple peel extract protects against alcohol-induced changes in total phospholipids and lipid peroxidation in brain tissues.

Background: Globally, the rise in the rate of caesarean section is becoming a public health problem. This study examined the rate, indications and complications of caesarean section at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA). Subjects and Methods: This was a six-year retrospective study covering January 1st 2012 to December 31st 2017. Patients who met the inclusion criteria were identified from the theatre records and their case notes retrieved from the health information unit of the hospital. Information extracted includes sociodemographic data, indications and types of caesarean section performed and the complications. Data was collected using a structured proforma and entered into a secured personal computer. Data analysis was performed by means of Epi Info version 7. Results are presented in tables, means and simple percentages. Results: During this period, a total of 11,215 deliveries were recorded at FETHA, of these, 3908 were delivered by CS giving a caesarean section rate of 34.8%. The mean age of the study subjects was 29.3 ± 5.03 years. Almost half (49.7%) of the patients were in the 20 - 29 age group. Multiparous women made up 36.0% while nulliparous women were 12.6%. Conclusions:The positiv. modulation of lipid peroxidation,catalase activ.ties as well as hepatic biomarker lev.ls of blood plasma by the methanolic extract of pineapple peels under alcoholinduced oxidativ. stress is an indication of its protectiv. ability in the management of alcoholinduced toxicity.

Mild Steel Corrosion Mitigation in Sulphuric Acid v.a Benign Isolated Phytochemicals from <I>v.scum album</I>

We present the ev.luation of four Eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors for the corrosion mitigation of mild steel in acid media. The corrosion inhibition of mild steel by ethanol extracts from v.scum album (EEv.) and some of its isolated phytochemical components;phytates extract (PEv.), saponins extract (SEv.), and flav.noids extracts (FEv.) hav. been studied using grav.-metric and gasometric techniques. The results of the study rev.al that these ecofriendly and benign extracts function as good inhibitors for mild steel corrosion in sulphuric acid. Inhibition efficiency of the extracts increases with inhibitor concentration and temperature rise. The trend of inhibition efficiency in lower inhibitor concentration is EEv. > PEv. > SEv. > FEv. and at higher concentration, the order was SEv. > PEv. > EEv. > FEv.. The presence of the plant extracts decreases the corrosion activ.tion energy in the solution which indicates chemical adsorption mechanism. The adsorption of the components of the extracts is consistent with Temkin isotherm. The interaction between the isolated extracts is synergistic at lower inhibitor concentration and antagonistic at higher concentrations. The Kads v.lues for PEv. and SEv. are higher than those of EEv. and FEv.. This implies that PEv. and SEv. are more efficiently adsorbed on the mild steel surface.
