Qualitativ. and quantitativ. studies on changes of coastal geomorphology and shoreline of Karnataka, India hav. been carried out using toposheets of Surv.y of India and satellite imageries (IRS-P6 and IRS-1D). Changes during 30 years period are studied at each station. Significant morphological changes in landforms like spit, channel Island, coastal plain, tidal flat, lateritic plain, alluv.al plain and sand bar within and adjcent to estuarine riv.r mouths of Kali, Sharav.thi, Kollur-Chakkara - Haladi and Udyav.ra Riv.rs are observ.d. The study indicates that gradual erosion is observ.d at i) Karwar spit along the northern side of the Kali riv.r mouth, ii) the spit at the southern side of the Sharav.thi riv.r mouth and iii) at some regions of Kundapur.

Coastlines are undergoing constant geomorphologic changes with respect to the incident wav. *** on wav.s measured at 9 m water depth,simulation of near shore wav. transformation is done using REFDIF-1numerical model and the near shore breaker parameters are estimated at two micro-tidal beaches along central west coast of *** results are v.lidated with measured *** the breaker parameters,long-shore current and long-shore sediment transport rates(LSTR) are computed by using semi-empirical *** long-shore current and LSTR are showing dramatic v.riations with respect to *** direction of LSTR is observ.d towards north since the approach wav.s are from south-west direction during pre-monsoon and post *** monsoon season,wav.s are from west south-west and resulted in southerly *** estimated annual net and gross LSTR by Cambridge Env.ronmental Research Consultants(CERC) at two locations are in the same order whereas LSTR estimated by Walton & Bruno and Kamphuis equations are showing different estimations because of difference in surf-zone width and foreshore slope between the two *** micro-tidal beaches with length less than 6 km,Kamphuis equation is giv.ng agreeable estimation of *** analysis of LSTR estimate shows that coastal inclination is the prominent factor in determining LSTR than incident wav. angle.

Spatio-temporal cross-shore profiles and textural characteristics are the key parameters for understanding dynamics of the inter-tidal sedimentary *** study describes short-term dynamics of the inter-tidal sedimentary env.ronment at beaches along the micro-tidal *** a correlation is estimated in cross-shore morphodynamics and textural characteristics of surface *** sedimentary env.ronment is examined for a complete annual cycle using monthly collected cross-shore profiles and sediment *** Dev.ag beach(northern side) and Rav.ndranath Tagore beach(southern side) at the Kali riv.r mouth,Karwar,west coast of India are characterized from extremely gentle to av.rage slope,and broadly composed of unimodal *** sedimentary env.ronment is significantly composed of textures hav.ng fine to medium sand,well to moderately sorted,fine to coarse skewed,and platykurtic to leptokurtic in *** the annual cycle a rev.rsal pattern is observ.d between the two adjacent beaches,where a slower rate of sediment accretion is observ.d at Dev.ag beach while Rav.ndranath Tagore beach exhibited *** beach dynamics along with the propagation of south-west(SW) and south-west-west(SWW) wav.s towards the coast significantly exhibit a dominance of northward sediment transport with the existence of a northerly alongshore *** addition,the study rev.als that an eroded beach may not be significantly identified composed of coarse *** poor correlation in morpho-sedimentary characteristics rev.als the prediction of grain characteristics based on beach profile and v.ce-v.rsa is unrealistic.

Grain character analysis of beach sediments along three selected beaches(Pav.nkurv.,Kundapura and Padukare)of Karnataka coast,west coast of India is carried out in the present *** objectiv. was to identify the textural behav.or of beach sediments during an annual cycle from March 2008 to February *** characteristics such as central tendency,sorting,kurtosis and skewness were estimated using GRADISTAT and *** maximum(62%)sediment samples were medium sand with unimodal and bimodal characters at all the three *** median v.lues v.ried in between-0.04φand 2.74φwith an av.rage v.lue of 1.61φ.The beaches were characterized as well sorted,moderately well sorted and moderately sorted sediment *** were identified as fine skewed to coarse skewed with platykurtic,mesokurtic and leptokurtic characters. Grain characteristics v.ried spatially and temporally along with beach orientation,foreshore slope and wav. action.A negativ. correlation between mean and sorting is identified for maximum number samples along the study region but not v.ry *** study shows that the sedimentary env.ronment at Kundapura were influenced by relativ.ly high wav. action compared to Padukare and Pav.nkurv. beach and the beaches were under erosion or non-deposition with strong winnowing process.

A composite fall-slippage model is proposed in this study for the Tertiary sedimentary coastal cliffs of v.rkala in the western coastal tract of Peninsular India which are retreating landwards due to the combination of sev.ral *** fall model in the present study accounts both spring seepage and wav. action,resulting in undercutting and this fall affects only the topmost laterite and the just below sandstone in the *** in this area affects all the litho-units and hence the geologic characteristics of all the litho-units are considered for dev.loping the slippage *** mathematically deriv.d model can be used in other cliffs exhibiting the same morphology as well as the one controlled by the same influencing *** model differs from other models in incorporating multi-lithounits as well as *** cliffs form a part of the aspiring geopark in the Global Geopark Network and hence a study on the cliff recession is a pressing requirement.
