The effects of temporal variation in soil carbon inputs on resource allocation in an annual plant

Aims Resource allocation in plants can be strongly affected by *** plant–plant interactions,terrestrial plants compete with the soil bacterial community over *** the bacterial communities cannot synthesize their own energy sources,they are dependent on external carbon *** the effect of overall amounts of carbon(added to the soil)on plant performance,the effect of fine scale temporal variation in soil carbon inputs on the bacterial biomass and its cascading effects on plant growth are largely *** hypothesize that continuous carbon supply(small temporal variance)will result in a relatively constant bacterial biomass that will effectively compete with plants for *** the other hand,carbon pulses(large temporal variance)are expected to cause oscillations in bacterial biomass,enabling plants temporal escape from competition and possibly enabling increased *** thus predicted that continuous carbon supply would increase root allocation at the expense of decreased reproductive *** also expected this effect to be noticeable only when sufficient nutrients were present in the *** Wheat plants were grown for 64 days in pots containing either sterilized or inoculated soils,with or without slow-release fertilizer,subjected to one of the following six carbon treatments:daily(1.5mg glucose),every other day(3mg glucose),4 days(6mg glucose),8 days(12mg glucose),16 days(24mg glucose)and no carbon *** Findings Remarkably,carbon pulses(every 2–16 days)led to increased reproductive allocation at the expense of decreased root allocation in plants growing in inoculated *** with our prediction,these effects were noticeable only when sufficient nutrients were present in the ***,soil inoculation in plants subjected to low nutrient availability resulted in decreased total plant *** interpret this to mean that when the amount of available nutrients is low,these nutrients are

Nanophotonics,the field that merges photonics and nanotechnology,has in recent years revolutionized the field of optics by enabling the manipulation of light–matter interactions with subwavelength ***,despite the many advances in this field,the design,fabrication and characterization has remained widely an iterative process in which the designer guesses a structure and solves the Maxwell’s equations for *** contrast,the inverse problem,i.e.,obtaining a geometry for a desired electromagnetic response,remains a challenging and time-consuming task within the boundaries of very specific ***,we experimentally demonstrate that a novel Deep Neural Network trained with thousands of synthetic experiments is not only able to retrieve subwavelength dimensions from solely farfield measurements but is also capable of directly addressing the inverse *** approach allows the rapid design and characterization of metasurface-based optical elements as well as optimal nanostructures for targeted chemicals and biomolecules,which are critical for sensing,imaging and integrated spectroscopy applications.

Mechanisms for electric field induced color change in coupled colloidal quantum dot molecules revealed by low temperatures single particle spectroscopy

Colloidal quantum dots(QDs),the building blocks of modern displays and optoelectronic devices,have reached the highest level of size and shape control,and stability during the last 30 ***,full utilization of their potential requires integration or assembly of more than one nanocrystal as in the case of coupled quantum dots molecules(CQDM),where two core–shell QDs are fused to form two emission centers in close *** CQDMs were recently shown to switch color under an applied electric field at room *** we use cryogenic single particle spectroscopy of single CQDMs under an electric field to show that various mechanisms can contribute to the spectrum change under an applied electric field at cryogenic *** first mechanism is the control of the delocalized electron wave function when the electric field is applied along the dimer *** electric field bends the conduction band and forces the electron wave function to localize in one of the QDs yielding preferential emission of that particular *** addition,we found that QDs and CQDMs could become sensitive to surface traps under an electric *** the case of CQDMs,that can result in decreasing the intensity of one of the QDs while increasing the other QD’s ***,we show that there are surface charges which screen the applied electric field in some of the *** as well can result in electric field-induced color-tuning of *** the underlying mechanisms responsible for spectral shifts under applied electric fields is critical for the development of color-tunable devices utilizing CQDMs,including efficient displays and single photon sources.

Rate and yield of repeat upper endoscopy in patients with dyspepsia

AIM: To determine the rate and yield of repeat esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) for dyspepsia in clinical practice,whether second opinions drive its use,and whether it is performed at the expense of colorectal cancer ***: We performed a retrospective cohort study of all patients who underwent repeat EGD for dyspepsia from 1996 to 2006 at the University of California,San Francisco endoscopy ***: Of 24 780 EGDs,5460 (22%) were performed for dyspepsia in 4873 *** these,451 patients (9.3%) underwent repeat EGD for dyspepsia at a median 1.7 (interquartile range,0.8-3.1) years after initial *** icant f indings possibly related to dyspepsia were more likely at initial (29%) vs repeat EGD (18%) [odds ratio (OR),1.45;95% confidence interval (CI): 1.20-1.75,P < 0.0001],and at repeat EGD if the initial EGD had reported such f indings (26%) than if it had not (14%) (OR,1.32;95% CI: 1.08-1.62,P = 0.0015).The same endoscopist performed the repeat and initial EGD in 77% of *** patients aged 50 years or older,286/311 (92%) underwent lower ***: Repeat EGD for dyspepsia occurred at a low but substantial rate,with lower yield than initial *** endoscopy use remains a public health priority.

Resistor-Capacitor Circuit as a Dynamic System

The paper considers the response to the accumulated energy in the resistor (R)-capacitor (C) circuit. In the (RC) circuit, the capacitor C is initially charged with the “capacitive” voltage U0. At that moment t=0, the P circuit switch turns on. By using Kirchhoff’s laws on the elements, a homogeneous differential equation of the first order with constant coefficients is obtained with the initial condition UC(0)=U0. The solution of the differential equation is presented in exponential form UC(t)=U0⋅e−t/τ. Qualitative analysis RC of the circuit gives a phase portrait on the line. From the phase portrait on the line, it can be seen that the charge UC(t)→UC∗=0when t→∞stabilizes, regardless of the initial conditions. It is shown that from UC(t)=U0⋅e−t/τa dynamic system defined by the function φ(t,UC)=UC⋅e−t/τcan be formed from. It has also been shown that, from the formed dynamic system, an autonomous system (circuit equation RC) can be found whose solution describes the formed dynamic system. It is also shown that the dynamic system φ(t,UC)=UC⋅e−t/τhas one attractive fixed point UC=0.

The Argumentation for Contemporary Peacemaking Efforts According to Jewish Tradition

Peace is a key concept in the Jewish tradition; it has a long history. It is also an extremely broad concept. The present article takes on the subject of contemporary peace between Israel and her neighbors, addressing the issue from the vantage point of Judaism. While opinions on many issues are divided in Judaism today, all streams within the Jewish tradition uphold the concept of peace. Even so, each stream supports a somewhat different version of this ideal, subject to different limitations or reservations. One of the most serious challenges which Judaism today faces in connection with the State of Israel is the issue of exchanging territories for peace. The goal of the present paper is to show that while most approaches rooted in traditional Judaism have opposed such an exchange, Israel＇s religious political parties have endorsed it, advancing different arguments in support of their view. The method followed in the present paper is to study the arguments which have been used in support of peace agreements based on return or exchange of land. In light of the arguments put forth in the paper, to be counted among the accomplishments is a greater degree of openness--even on the part of the religious sector in Israel--toward the effort to achieve peace between Israel and her neighbors.

Revisiting Contemporary Judaism in Modem Israel

Today＇s society in Israel is divided and tom on many issues, including religion, and Jewish and Israeli identity, yet occasionally, a single event emerges which combines several divisions. One such issue is the ＂identity crisis＂ also known as the question of ＂Who is a Jew？＂. This is a thorny complex problem, and one which has not yet been awarded a clear-cut constitutional solution. For example, it continues to be debated whether the religious definition should be the decisive factor, that is, should a Jew defined as an individual born to a mother who is Jewish or has been converted according to halacha, or whether Israeli identity is the more critical element and whether any individual born in or immigrated to Israel who served in the army, works and pays taxes in Israel, and identifies with the state＇s values should be identified as a Jew？ In this paper, the author wishes to focus on equally complicated issue, although one has attracted less attention. This is the issue of halachic polarization or extremism that characterizes Judaism in modem Israel. Following a brief historical explanation, the author defines the problem at hand, and propose a solution.

Autotransplantation of a premolar to the maxillary anterior region in young children- how long should the donor root be? A case report

Autotransplantation of premolars to anterior region after incisor loss due to trauma is accepted as the best restoration procedure with very long follow-ups. There are two main protocols: Premolars with only two thirds of the root or premolars with complete root development. Premolars with two thirds of the root completed remain vital and show complete pulp obliteration while premolars with closed apex require root canal treatment. The problem arises when the child is very young and the root of the donor premolar is developed for only one third. This case report describes the outcome of an autotransplantation of a lower first premolar with only a third of developed root to the anterior region. The donor tooth was extracted with his follicle and placed instead of tooth No. 21. For the first month esthetics was restored with a glass-fibers ribbon attached to tooth No. 11 and composite material. After a month, the crown erupted and was reshaped to mimic an incisor with composite. Orthodontic movement was performed after 5 mo, in order to alleviate the gingival contour. The final restoration was performed after 15 mo. Follow up showed full root development with normal mobility, continuous periodontal ligament and complete pulp obliteration. A multidisciplinary approach and meticulous preparation are necessary for a positive result in autotransplantation of premolars with only a third of root development to the anterior region and this case report show that this method can be performed in very young children.
