Simulations of a logistic-type model with delays for Chagas disease with insecticide spraying

This work studies and numerically simulates a logistic-type model for the dynamics of Chagas disease, which is caused by the parasite T. cruzi and affects millions of humans and domestic mammals throughout rural areas in Central and South America. A basic model for the disease dynamics that includes insecticide spraying was developed in Spagnuolo et al. (2010) [27] and consists of a delay-differential equation for the vectors and three nonlinear ordinary differential equations for the populations of the infected vectors, infected humans and infected domestic mammals. In this work, the vector equation is modified by using a logistic term with zero, one or two delays or time lags. The aim of this study is three-fold: to numerically study the effects of using different numbers of delays on the model behavior; to find if twice yearly insecticide spraying schedules improve vector control; and to study the sensitivity of the system to the delays in the case of two delays, by introducing randomness in the delays. It is found that the vector equation with different number of delays has very different solutions. The “best” day of spraying is the middle of Spring and twice annual sprayings cause only minor improvements in disease control. Finally, the model is found to be insensitive to the values of the delays, when the delays are randomly distributed within rather narrow intervals or ranges centered on the parameter values used in Coffield et al. (2014) [8].

Are demographics associated with mucoepidermoid or acinic cell carcinoma parotid malignancies in children?

Objective:To identify possible associations between patient demographics and parotid cancer histological type in pediatric ***:Pediatric patients(ages:birth-18.0 years)in the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results(SEER)database were included from 1973 to 2014 based on a diagnosis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma or acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland using the ICD O-3 codes of C07.9 and 8430 or *** were classified into the following cohorts:<14 and 14-18 years of age based on the mean age at ***:Three hundred and three pediatric patients were diagnosed with mucoepidermoid carcinoma or acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland within the SEER 18 *** pediatric patients 14-18 years of age were 7.68 times more likely to have an acinic cell carcinoma(adjusted OR:7.68[95%Cl:2.01-29.44]).When stratified by histological type,58.9%of female pediatric patients≥14 years of age had an acinic cell carcinoma as compared to 37.3%of male pediatric patients≥14 years of age,36.5%of female pediatric patients<14 years of age,and 34.0%of male pediatric patients<14 years of age(P=0.01).Conclusions:Based on this study,pediatric female patients between the ages of 14 and 18 years are the most likely cohort to have acinic cell *** results of this study may assist providers during the work up of a pediatric patient with a suspected parotid malignancy.

Is the incidence of anaplastic thyroid cancer increasing: A population based epidemiology study

Objective:To provide an understanding of the incidence of anaplastic thyroid cancer within the United ***:Patients in the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results (SEER) database were included from 1973 to 2014 based on a diagnosis of anaplastic thyroid cancer using ICDO-3 *** were categorized into cohorts based on their year of ***:1527 patients were diagnosed with anaplastic thyroid cancer within the SEER 18 *** age-adjusted incidence rate was 0.2 per 1,000,000 people (95% CI:0.0-0.5) in 1973 and was 1.2 per 1,000,000 people (95% Cl:0.8-1.6) in 2014 (average annual percent change:3.0% [95% CI:2.2%-3.7%]).Patients tended to be of older age (mean age:70.5 [range 15.0-102.0]),of female sex (62.8%),and Caucasian (81.1%).Finally,survival over time remained the same,as median disease specific survival months was 4.00 (95% CI:2.26-5.74) from 1995 to 1999 and 4.00 (95% Cl:3.26-4.74) from 2010 to ***:The incidence rate of anaplastic thyroid cancer has increased from 1973 to ***,median survival in months did not greatly change *** on this increasing incidence,physicians must act appropriately to identify patients with anaplastic thyroid cancer as it possesses a high morbidity and mortality.

To be useful for most scientific and medical applications,compact particle accelerators will require much higher average current than enabled by current *** this purpose,we propose a photonic crystal architecture for a dielectric laser accelerator,referred to as a multi-input multi-output silicon accelerator(MIMOSA),that enables simultancous acceleration of multiple electron beams,increasing the total electron throughput by at least I order of *** achieve this,we show that the photonic crystal must support a mode at the I point in reciprocal space,with a normalized frequency equal to the normalized speed of the phase-matched *** show that the figure of merit of the MIMOSA can be inferred from the eigenmodes of the corresponding infinitely periodic structure,which provides a powerful approach to design such ***,we extend the MIMOSA architecture to electron deflectors and other clectron manipulation *** additional functionalities,combined with the increased electron throughput of these devices,permit all-optical on-chip manipulation of electron beams in a fully integrated architecture compatible with current fabrication technologies,which opens the way to unconventional electron beam shaping,imaging,and radiationg encration.

The “Iterated Weakest Link” Model of Adaptive Security Investment

We devise a model for security investment that reflects dynamic interaction between a defender, who faces uncertainty, and an attacker, who repeatedly targets the weakest link. Using the model, we derive and compare optimal security investment over multiple periods, exploring the delicate balance between proactive and reactive security investment. We show how the best strategy depends on the defender’s knowledge about prospective attacks and the recoverability of costs when upgrading defenses reactively. Our model explains why security under-investment is sometimes rational even when effective defenses are available and can be deployed independently of other parties’ choices. Finally, we connect the model to real-world security problems by examining two case studies where empirical data are available: computers compromised for use in online crime and payment card security.
