Assessments on slope instabilities triggered by engineering excavations near a small settlement(Turkey)

Analysis of ARMPS2010 database with LaModel and an updated abutment angle equation

The Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability(ARMPS) program was developed by the national Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(nIOSH) to help the United States coal mining industry to design safe retreat room-and-pillar panels. ARMPS calculates the magnitude of the in-situ and mining-induced loads by using geometrical computations and empirical rules. In particular, the program uses the "abutment angle" concept in calculating the magnitude of the abutment load on pillars adjacent to a gob. In this paper, stress measurements from United States and Australian mines with different overburden geologies with varying hard rock percentages were back analyzed. The results of the analyses indicated that for depths less than 200 m, the ARMPS empirical derivation of a 21° abutment angle was supported by the case histories;however, at depths greater than 200 m, the abutment angle was found to be significantly less than 21°. In this paper, a new equation employing the panel width to overburden depth ratio is constructed for the calculation of accurate abutment angles for deeper mining cases. The new abutment angle equation was tested using both ARMPS2010 and La Model for the entire case history database of ARMPS2010. The new abutment angle equation to estimate the magnitude of the mining-induced loads used together with the La Model program was found to give good classification accuracies compared to ARMPS2010 for deep cover cases.

Determinations of ^(171)Er half-life and some ^(171)Tm transition energies

The neutrons have been captured by Erbium nuclei which were received by using clinical electron linear accelerator. In this experiment, the possibility of the neutron capture process has been observed because of emitted neutrons appearing in the experimental area. In particular,neutron capture of ^(170)Er nucleus has been observed. After the neutron capture of ^(170)Er nucleus, the unstable ^(171)Er has been formed and decayed into the ^(171)Tm. By using this reaction path, some transition energies of ^(171)Tm obtained from the residual activity measurements and the half-life of ^(171)Er have been determined, and they are in agreement with adopted values in the literature.

Elevated serum neopterin levels in children with functional constipation: association with systemic proinflammatory cytokines

Background Functional constipation is a clinical problem with an incompletely understood etiology. Functional bowel diseases have been shown to be related to inflammation in many studies in adults. In this study, we aimed to evaluate leuko-cytes, C-reactive protein, proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, and neopterin levels in children with functional constipation. Methods Seventy-six children with constipation and 71 healthy controls (mean age 7.12 ± 3.46 years and 7.32 ± 4.33 years, respectively, P = 0.991) were included in the study. Leukocytes, C-reactive protein, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TnF-α) and neopterin levels were assessed in patients and healthy controls. Parameters were measured in the serum using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methods. Results Mean IL-6 (20.31 ± 12.05 vs. 16.2 ± 10.25 pg/mL, respectively, P = 0.003), IL-12 (181.42 ± 133.45 vs. 135.6 ± 83.67 pg/mL, respectively, P = 0.018) and neopterin levels (2.08 ± 1.12 vs. 1.52 ± 1.02 pg/mL, respectively, P = 0.001) were significantly higher in constipated children than healthy controls. Leukocyte and thrombocyte counts, C-reactive protein, and IL-1β, IL-10 and TnF-α levels did not show any difference between the two groups. Conclusions In this study, IL-6, IL-12 and neopterin levels of constipated patients were found to be higher than those of controls. These results indicate the presence of subclinical inflammation in children with functional constipation.

Preservation initiatives for the truncated pyramid-shaped traditional houses of Siirt, Turkey

The traditional houses of the residential areas in and around Siirt in the southeastern region of Turkey are notable because of their interesting forms. The most successful examples are the ＂truncated pyramidal-shaped houses＂ that have existed for centuries and are unique to the locality; however, these forms are demolished rapidly. In this study, the structures of small- scale settlements in Siirt province and its environs have been evaluated to highlight the cultural aspects of the region. The subject of this research is to investigate the design principles of the rural houses constructed in vernacular style to raise international awareness of the need to preserve vernacular architecture. Surviving examples have been examined in terms of multiple case approach by their forms, spatial compositions, changes in their forms over time, their layouts in urban and rural areas, the construction techniques used to produce them from material production through implementation, the composition of the living space and its uses, their differences or similarities to other houses in the region and their aesthetic details. The research reveals that the design principles of traditional rural architecture offer the use of local material and techniques in a unique way that promote highlights to the future.

A case study of the stability of a non-typical bleeder entry system at a *** mine

Longwall abutment loads are influenced by several factors,including depth of cover,pillar sizes,panel dimensions,geological setting,mining height,proximity to gob,intersection type,and size of the *** does proximity to the gob affect pillar loading and entry condition?Does the gob influence depend on whether the abutment load is a forward,side,or rear loading?Do non-typical bleeder entry systems follow the traditional front and side abutment loading and extent concepts?If not,will an improved understanding of the combined abutment extent warrant a change in pillar design or standing support in bleeder entries?This paper details observations made in the non-typical bleeder entries of a moderate depth longwall panel—specifically,data collected from borehole pressure cells and roof extensometers,observations of the conditions of the entries,and numerical modeling of the bleeder entries during longwall *** primary focus was on the extent and magnitude of the abutment loading experienced due to the extraction of the longwall *** to the layout of the longwall panels and bleeder entries,the borehole pressure cells(BPCs)and roof extensometers did not show much change due to the advancing of the first ***,they did show a noticeable increase due to the second longwall advancement,with a maximum of about 4 MPa of pressure increase and 5mmof roof *** observations of the conditions showed little to no change from before the first longwall panel extraction began to when the second longwall panel had been advanced more than 915 *** pillar spalling was observed on the corners of the pillars closest to the longwall gob as well as an increase in water in the *** addition to the observations and instrumentation,numerical modeling was performed to validate modeling procedures against the monitoring results and evaluate the bleeder *** Consulting Group’s FLAC3D numerical modeling software was used to evaluate the bl

Gallbladder polyps: Factors affecting surgical decision

AIM: To determine the factors affecting the decision to perform surgery, and the efficiency of ultrasonography (USG) in detecting gallbladder polyps (GP). METHODS: Data for 138 patients who underwent cholecystectomy between 1996 and 2012 in our clinic with a diagnosis of GP were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic data, clinical presentation, principal symptoms, ultrasonographic and histopathological findings were evaluated. Patients were evaluated in individual groups according to the age of the patients (older or younger than 50 years old) and polyp size (bigger or smaller than 10 mm) and characteristics of the polyps (pseudopolyp or real polyps). χ 2 tests were used for the statistical evaluation of the data. RESULTS: The median age was 50 (26-85) years and 91 of patients were female. Of 138 patients who underwent cholecystectomy with GP diagnosis, only 99 had a histopathologically defined polyp; 77 of them had pseudopolyps and 22 had true polyps. Twenty-one patients had adenocarcinoma. Of these 21 patients, 11 were male, their median age was 61 (40-85) years and all malignant polyps had diameters > 10 mm (Pnts in whom surgery were performed, 112 had ultrasonographic polyps with diameters nts who also had polyps with diameters > 10 mm, 22 had true polyps. The sensitivity of USG was 84.6% for polyps with diameters > 10 mm (P nly 66% in polyps with diameters nCLUSIOn: The risk of malignancy was high in the patients over 50 years old who had single polyps with diameters > 10 mm.
