Severe aconite poisoning successfully treated with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation:A case report

BACKGROUND Most species of aconite contain highly toxic aconitines,the oral ingestion of which can be fatal,primarily because they cause ventricular *** describe a case of severe aconite poisoning that was successfully treated through venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(VA-ECMO)and in which detailed toxicological analyses of the aconite roots and biological samples were performed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(LC-MS/MS).CASE SUMMARY A 23-year-old male presented to the emergency room with circulatory collapse and ventricular arrhythmia after ingesting approximately half of a root labeled,“Aconitum japonicum Thunb”.Two hours after arrival,VA-ECMO was initiated as circulatory collapse became refractory to antiarrhythmics and *** hours after arrival,an electrocardiogram revealed a return to sinus *** patient was weaned off VA-ECMO and the ventilator on hospital days 3 and 5,*** hospital day 15,he was transferred to a psychiatric *** other half of the root and his biological samples were toxicologically analyzed using LC-MS/MS,revealing 244.3 mg/kg of aconitine and 24.7 mg/kg of mesaconitine in the *** on admission contained 1.50 ng/mL of *** hospital day 2,neither were *** on admission showed 149.09 ng/mL of aconitine and 3.59 ng/mL of mesaconitine,but these rapidly decreased after hospital day *** The key to saving the life of a patient with severe aconite poisoning is to introduce VA-ECMO as soon as possible.

Deformation behaviors of magnesium alloy AZ31 sheet in cold deep drawing

To investigate how the popular magnesium alloy AZ31 sheet(aluminum 3%,zinc 1%)behaves in cold working,deep drawing experiments at room temperature,along with finite element(FE)simulation,were performed on the cold forming sheet of the AZ31 alloy after being annealed under various *** activities were focused on the fracture pattern,limit drawing ratio(LDR),deformation load,thickness distribution,anisotropic effect,as well as the influences of the annealing conditions and tool configuration on *** results display that punch shoulder radius instead of die clearance,has much influence on the thickness *** anisotropy is remarkable in cold working,which adversely impacts the *** fracture often happens on the side wall at an angle to axis of the deformed *** results also imply that the LDR for the material under present experimental conditions is 1.72,and annealing the material at 450 ℃ for 1 h may be preferable for the cold deep drawing.

Dual ultracontractivity and its applications

The ultracontractivity is well studied and several equivalent conditions are known. In this paper, we introduce the dual notion of the ultracontractivity, which we call the dual ultracontractivity. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the dual ultracontractivity. As an application, we discuss one-dimensional diffusion processes. We can write the conditions for the dual ultracontractivity in terms of speed measures.

Using sorbents to control heavy metals and particulate matter emission during solid fuel combustion

Some of the heavy metals in coal and wastes vaporize during combustion, concentrate in fine particulates, and emit with the flue gas into the atmosphere, to produce adverse effect on environment and health. This study first investigates the fate of the heavy metal species, especially Pb, Cd and Cr, known as semi-volatile, in various flue gases, especially in the presence of HCI and SO2, by chemical equilibrium calculation, in which, Si and Ca were proposed as base sorbent materials to capture Pb, Cd and Cr. Then Si- and Ca-based compounds as well as waste materials used as sorbents were optimized to capture the heavy metals. Finally, the optimal sorbent was tested in actual burning of dried sewage sludge as solid fuel, to evaluate the effectiveness of the sorbent. Calculated results show that Cl increases the volatility of most heavy metals, while SO2 enhances formation of condensed phases. Among the sorbents tested, kaolin appears most efficient to capture Pb and Cd. For sludge combustion with kaolin addition, both Pb and Cd were shifted from sub-micron to macro-sized particles, and accompanied by considerable decrease of 0.1 μm particles.

Some Issues on the Strength of the Lithosphere

The strength of the oceanic and continental lithosphere has important controls on some of the major geological processes on earth including the operation of plate tectonics and the long-term stability of the continental roots. However, explaining these major geological features from the experi- mental and theoretical studies on the strength of rocks is challenging and some of the existing models for the strength of the lithosphere do not explain these main geological observations. A brief review is provided to summarize recent progress in these areas with the emphasis on experimental studies.

Leaf Positioning of Arabidopsis in Response to Blue Light

Appropriate leaf positioning is essential for optimizing photosynthesis and plant growth. However, it has not been elucidated how green leaves reach and maintain their position for capturing light. We show here the regulation of leaf positioning under blue light stimuli. When 1-week-old Arabidopsis seedlings grown under white light were transferred to red light （25 i, mol m^-2 s^-1） for 5 d, new petioles that appeared were almost horizontal and their leaves were curled and slanted downward. However, when a weak blue light from above （0.1 i, mol m^-2 s^-1） was superimposed on red light, the new petioles grew obliquely upward and the leaves were flat and horizontal. The leaf positioning required both phototropinl （photl） and nonphototropic hypocotyl 3 （NPH3）, and resulted in enhanced plant growth. In an nph3 mutant, neither optimal leaf positioning nor leaf flattening by blue light was found, and blue light-induced growth enhancement was drastically reduced. When blue light was increased from 0.1 to 5 i, mol m^-2 s^-1, normal leaf positioning and leaf flattening were induced in both photl and nph3 mutants, suggesting that phot2 signaling became functional and that the signaling was independent of photl and NPH3 in these responses. When plants were irradiated with blue light （0.1 i, mol m^-2 s^- 1） from the side and red light from above, the new leaves became oriented toward the source of blue light. When we transferred these plants to both blue light and red light from above, the leaf surface changed its orientation to the new blue light source within a few hours, whereas the petioles initially were unchanged but then gradually rotated, suggesting the plasticity of leaf positioning in response to blue light. We showed the tissue expression of NPH3 and its plasma membrane localization via the coiled-coil domain and the C-terminal region. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident caused radioactive pollution in northeastern Honshu Island,*** study examined the influence of snowmelt and rainfall on soil erosion pro-cesses and siltation of small lakes in Miyagi Prefecture(150 km northwest of the power plant).Two sets of slopes and lakes,respectively in pasture and forest catchments,were *** thickness,soil infiltration,surface runoff volume,soil and sediment physicochemical properties,Cs concentration of precipitation,meltwater,and rainwater,and lake siltation rates were *** total radioactive Cs content in precipitation was 0.7-7.4 Bq·L^-1 and was below the Japanese standard(10 Bq·L^-1).Total radioactive Cs was at the allowable level in water flowing down the pasture catchment slope(0.1-9.2 Bq·L^-1)during snowmelt and rainfall,as well as in pasture(0.9-8.8 Bq·L^-1)and forest(0.7-5.2 Bq·L^-1)catchment lake *** was no soil erosion(surface runoff)in the forest *** losses in the pasture catchment were 23 due to rainfall and 9 kg ha^-1 yr^-1 following spring *** snow-melt,a 0.5 and 0.2 mm thick layer of silt was deposited in pasture and forest catchment lakes,respec-tively,and 1.4 and 0.6 mm were deposited during the rainfall *** siltation rates were 1.9 and 0.8 mm·yr^-1 for pasture and forest catchment lakes,*** upper layer of lake bottom sedi-ments is represented mainly by silt fractions(2-50μm),with high organic matter(4.0-5.7%)and radiocesium(1100-1600 kg·ha^-1)contents.
