Wavefront-optimized surface retreatments of refractive error following previous laser refractive surgery: a retrospective study

Background:Retreatments are sometimes necessary to correct residual or induced refractive errors following refractive *** different combinations of primary treatment methods and retreatment techniques have been studied,however,few studies have investigated wavefront-optimized(WFO)technology for retreatment following primary refractive *** study aimed to report the outcomes of WFO photorefractive keratectomy(PRK)retreatments of refractive error following previous laser refractive surgery with PRK,laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK),or laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy(LASEK).Methods:We reviewed records of patients who underwent WFO PRK retreatments using the Allegretto Wave Eye-Q 400 Hz Excimer Laser System(Alcon Surgical)between January 2008 and April 2011 at Walter Reed Army Medical center and Madigan Army Medical *** were recorded in terms of uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA),manifest refraction spherical equivalent(MRSE),corrected distance visual acuity(cDVA),and complications at 1 month(M),3 M,and 6 M ***:Seventy-eight patients(120 eyes)underwent WFO PRK retreatment during the study *** surgery was surface ablation in 87 eyes(78 PRK,9 LASEK)and LASIK in 33 *** mean spherical equivalent before retreatment was−0.79±0.94 D(−3.00 to 1.88 D).UDVA was≥20/20 in 69 eyes(60.0%)at 1 M,54 eyes(71.1%)at 3 M,and 27 eyes(73.0%)at 6 M *** was within±0.50 D of emmetropia in 78 eyes(67.8%)at 1 M,59 eyes(77.6%)at 3 M,and 25 eyes(67.6%)at 6 M *** was maintained within±1 line of pre-op in 113 of 115 eyes(98.3%)at 1 M,74 of 76 eyes(97.4%)at 3 M,and 37 eyes(100%)at 6 M ***:Although follow-up was limited beyond 3 M,WFO PRK retreatments in patients with residual refractive error may be a safe and effective *** studies are necessary to determine the long-term safety and stability of outcomes.

Efficient search of compositional space for hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites via Bayesian optimization

Accelerated searches,made possible by machine learning techniques,are of growing interest in materials discovery.A suitable case involves the solution processing of components that ultimately form thin films of solar cell materials known as hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites(HOIPs).The number of molecular species that combine in solution to form these films constitutes an overwhelmingly large“compositional”space(at times,exceeding 500,000 possible combinations).Selecting a HOIP with desirable characteristics involves choosing different cations,halides,and solvent blends from a diverse palette of *** unguided search by experimental investigations or molecular simulations is prohibitively *** this work,we propose a Bayesian optimization method that uses an application-specific kernel to overcome challenges where data is scarce,and in which the search space is given by binary variables indicating whether a constituent is present or *** demonstrate that the proposed approach identifies HOIPs with the targeted maximum intermolecular binding energy between HOIP salt and solvent at considerably lower cost than previous state-of-the-art Bayesian optimization methodology and at a fraction of the time(less than 10%)needed to complete an exhaustive *** find an optimal composition within 15±10 iterations in a HOIP compositional space containing 72 combinations,and within 31±9 iterations when considering mixed halides(240 combinations).Exhaustive quantum mechanical simulations of all possible combinations were used to validate the optimal prediction from a Bayesian optimization *** paper demonstrates the potential of the Bayesian optimization methodology reported here for new materials discovery.

Purpose To date,no study has investigated the extent to which sleep-wake behaviour(SWB)influences match performance in junior tennis *** study aimed to assess the influence of SWB for the week and night before on match performance,particularly match analytics and *** This study recruited 10 junior state grade tennis players who wore an actigraphy device and completed a sleep diary for the week before their match on two separate occasions throughout their competition *** wore a global positioning system device to track their movement during matches,and an experienced tennis coach recorded players'match *** This study showed that the sleep fragmentation index was significantly lower the week before matches in females who had won than those who had ***,the sleep fragmentation index was significantly lower the night before a given match than the week *** sleep fragmentation index and sleep latency significantly influenced match performance in junior tennis *** percentage of second serves points won differed between match wins and losses for male players,while winners and forced errors differed for female *** These findings provide a detailed profile of tennis match play in junior state grade *** individual differences,reduced restlessness the night before a match coincides with increased match performance.

Stochastic walk-on-spheres(WOS)algorithms for solving the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation(LPBE)provide several attractive features not available in traditional deterministic solvers:Gaussian error bars can be computed easily,the algorithm is readily parallelized and requires minimal memory and multiple solvent environments can be accounted for by reweighting ***,previouslyreported computational times of these Monte carlo methods were not competitive with existing deterministic numerical *** present paper demonstrates a series of numerical optimizations that collectively make the computational time of these Monte carlo LPBE solvers competitive with deterministic *** optimization techniques used are to ensure that each atom’s contribution to the variance of the electrostatic solvation free energy is the same,to optimize the bias-generating parameters in the algorithm and to use an epsilon-approximate rather than exact nearest-neighbor search when determining the size of the next step in the Brownian motion when outside the molecule.

Endothelium-specific gene and stem cell-based therapy for erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction （ED） commonly results from endothelial dysfunction of the systemic vasculature. Although phosphodiesterase type 5 （PDE-5） inhibitors are effective at treating most cases of ED, they must be taken routinely and are ineffectual for a meaningful number of men. In recent years gene and stem cell-based therapies targeted at the penile endothelium have been gaining momentum in preclinical studies. These early studies reveal that gene and stem cell-based therapies may be both enduring and efficacious, and may eventually lead to a cure for ED. The following review will highlight our current understanding of endothelial-specific gene and stem cell-based therapies performed to date in a number of experimental animal models.

Highly active and durable Pd-cu catalysts for oxygen reduction in alkaline exchange membrane fuel cells

A Pd-cu catalyst, with primary B2-type phase, supported by VulcanXc-7R carbon was synthesized via a solvothermal method. The catalysts were physically and electrochemically characterized by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）, trans- mission electron microscopy （TEM） and both cyclic and linear sweep voltammetry using a rotating disk electrode （RDE）. During the RDE testing, the half-wave potential of the Pd-cu/Vulcan catalyst was 50 mV higher compared to that of commercial Pt/c catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction （ORR） in alkaline media. The Pd-cu/Vulcan exhibited a specific activity of 1.27 mA/cm2 and a mass activity of 0.59 A/mgpd at 0.9 V, which were 4 and 3 times greater than that of the commercial Pt/c catalyst, respectively. The Pd-cu/Vulcan catalyst also showed higher in-situ alkaline exchange membrane fuel cell （AEMFc） performance, with operating power densities of 1100 MW/cm2 operating on H2/O2 and 700 MW/cm2 operating on H2/Air （cO2-free）, which were markedly higher than those of the commercial Pt/c. The Pd-cu/ Vulcan catalyst also exhibited high stability during a short-term, in-situ AEMFc durability test, with only around 11% performance loss after 30 hours of operation, an improve- ment over most AEMFcs reported in the literature to date.

cUTANEOUS AMOEBIASIS A REVIEW AND REPORT OF THREE cASES OBSERVED IN NORTH cHINA

cases of cutaneous amoebiasis in which the organism has been studied and identified as E. histolytica are few in number. In general they fall into two clinical groups; those in which the dermatitis is secondary to an amoebic abscess of the abdominal viscera, usually the liver, and those With fistulous or condylomatous ulcers of the perianal region and buttocks. Adequate study has not been made of the source of infection especially in the latter group, but it is assumed to be an antecedent amoebic colitis with or without symptoms of dysentery. In the former group involvement of the skin is by direct extension of an abscess or along a surgical incision; in the second group, presumably by direct contact with contaminated feces, or by direct extension from the bowel. Three cases of amoebic infection of the skin are described, two with condylomatous lesions of the genito-anal region, one of which followed an acute bloody diarrhea. The second was complicated by early syphilitic disease of the female genitalia. In the third case a papilloma of the anal region was invaded secondarily by the organism. The parasites were studied in fixed tissue preparations in each case, and in the living form in one, and identified as Entamoeba histolytica. The histological characteristics of the skin lesions were like those produced in other tissues by this parasite. The appearance of amoebae between fairly normal epithelial cells in the most superficial lesions and their tendency to spread along the path of least resistance in deeper structures suggest that the organism may be able to penetrate tissue by the mechanical action of its pseudopodia.
