Experimental Analysis of Flow Structure in Contra-Rotating Axial Flow Pump Designed with Different Rotational Speed Concept

As a high specific speed pump, the contra-rotating axial flow pump distinguishes itself in a rear rotor rotating in the opposite direction of the front rotor, which remarkably contributes to the energy conversion, the reduction of the pump size, better hydraulic and cavitation performances. However, with two rotors rotating reversely, the significant interaction between blade rows was observed in our prototype contra-rotating rotors, which highly affected the pump performance compared with the conventional axial flow pumps. Consequently, a new type of rear rotor was designed by the rotational speed optimization methodology with some additional considerations, aiming at better cavitation performance, the reduction of blade rows interaction and the secondary flow suppression. The new rear rotor showed a satisfactory performance at the design flow rate but an unfavorable positive slope of the head - flow rate curve in the partial flow rate range less than 40% of the design flow rate, which should be avoided for the reliability of pump-pipe systems. In the present research, to understand the internal flow field of new rear rotor and its relation to the performances at the partial flow rates, the velocity distributions at the inlets and outlets of the rotors are firstly investigated. Then, the boundary layer flows on rotor surfaces, which clearly reflect the secondary flow inside the rotors, are analyzed through the limiting streamline observations using the multi-color oil-film method. Finally, the unsteady numerical simulations are carded out to understand the complicated internal flow structures in the rotors.

Hardware in the loop simulation （HILS） has been investigated in the field of the multibody dynamics （MBD）, which combined the MBD simulation with the actual mechanical system. The fast simulation is necessary for the HILS system in order to require the real time simulation. This paper presents a fast simulation technique using the domain decomposition method with the iteration in the flexible multibody system in which flexible linkage system and electro-hydraulic drive system are coupled with each other. Case of intramedullary spinal cord metastasis of renal cell carcinoma

Intramedullary spinal cord tumors are rare. The improved survival resulting from more effective treatments formany cancers has led to an increased number of publications concerning intramedullary spinal cord metastasis(ISCM), including case reports and literature reviews; however, ISCM remains extremely rare in renal cancer. A 69-year-old man with a medical history of renal cell carcinoma(RCC) presented with urinary retention and bilateral paralysis of the lower extremities. A neurological examination revealed bilateral paraparesis below L1. Although brain magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), bone scintigraphy, and abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed no abdominal findings, the thracolumbar MRI indicated a spot on the spinal cord at the Th12 level that exhibited hyperintensity on T2-weighted imaging and gadolinium diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid enhancement on T1-weighted imaging. Accordingly, an ISCM of RCC was diagnosed. The patient rejected all treatments for these metastases except the steroid therapy. The patient's condition deteriorated owing to metastatic progression, and he died 3 mo after the appearance of ISCM symptoms. The prognosis of this condition was poor. The mean survival durations were 8 mo with surgical treatment, 4 mo with irradiation, and 2 mo with palliative treatments. In cases involving neurological features and if brain or bone metastasis or spinal cord compression is not clearly observed, gadolinium-enhanced MRI should be performed to determine the existence of ISCM. Recently, some authors have reported the efficacy of ISCM resection. Surgical treatment could potentially yield improvements in the nervous symptoms or a longer survival after treatment. Although the prognosis was poor in most cases of ISCM, surgical treatment may improve the patient's quality of life.

Although acute appendicitis is a common disease, retroperitoneal abscesses are rarely observed. Here, we report a case consisting of a psoas abscess and cutaneous fistula caused by appendicitis. The patient was a 56-year-old male who was introduced to our institution due to an intractable right psoas abscess. Imaging tests had been performed over the previous 3 years; however, clinicians could not find the origin of the abscess and failed to resolve the problem. A successful operation was performed via a laparoscopic approach, and 17 mo have passed without recurrence. The advantage of laparoscopic surgery is well understood in cases of appendicitis with abscesses. However, the indication for laparoscopic approach is not clear for retroperitoneal abscesses. From our experience, we can conclude that appendicitis with retroperitonealabscesses can be managed and treated using a laparoscopic approach.

A Study for Conservation of Herbaceous Plants at Urban Green Spaces: A Comparison to Suburban Secondary Forest

＜正＞The meaning of conservation of urban green spaces in Kyoto city was studied by comparing the herbaceous flora between 15 isolated urban green spaces and a suburban secondary forest. At the 15 urban green spaces of 58.9hm2 in total, 376 herbaceous plants including 276 native species and 100 alien species were recorded. At a suburban secondary forest of 50.8 hm2, 355 herbaceous plants including 298 native species and 57 alien species were recorded on the list of herbaceous plants surveyed in the Kamigamo Experimental Forest of Kyoto University by technical officers between 1995 and 1996. The percentage of alien species was significantly high in the urban green spaces, whereas the percentage of native species was significantly high in the suburban secondary forest （chi-square test and Haberman’s residual analysis, p ＜ 0.05）. Similarity coefficients between the urban green spaces and the suburban secondary forest were 0.48 in Jaccard index and 0.65 in Sorenson index. The percentage of perennials that is known to appear in late stage of succession was significantly high in the unique species of the suburban secondary forest （chi-square test and Haberman’s residual analysis, p ＜ 0.05）. This was suggested that a suburban secondary forest had more stable environment in comparison with the urban green spaces. The red-listed species recorded at the suburban secondary forest included Sarcochilus japonicus （Orchidaceae）, an epiphyte, which grows on tree trunks in humid forests. But no epiphyte was recorded at the 15 urban green spaces. It was supposed that the forests of the isolated urban green spaces had smaller amount of humid environments because they had greater amount of forest edges in comparison with the suburban secondary forest, which was connected to a larger forest area, and because they are sensitive to solar radiation and wind from outside of forests （edge effects）. ＜正＞It is essential to estimate and avoid the impacts of large structures on ecosystems from anearly planning stage. Although detailed and long-termed data collection is desirable, conductingsuch intensive surveys at a number of locations during the initial stage of highway route selection isnot realistic. Conventional ecological assessment methods essentially have positive values;however,a holistic point of view for biodiversity protection is currently missing. With these concerns in mind,we carried out research on the procedure to estimate the relative impacts of highway alternative routeson habitats as a general guide for initial route selections. The estimation procedure that embodied aholistic approach incorporated habitat dependency indices （HDIs） of species groups that werehypothetically established from landscape ecological studies. The procedural steps are 1) delineate astudy area, 2) prepare an existing land cover layer, 3) determine species groups for the habitat impactassessment, 4) define the levels of habitat values for each species group （a habitat value matrix）, 5)assign a number （0 to 1） to each level of the habitat values, 6) produce the habitat impact layer of eachspecies group, 7) calculate the habitat dependency index （HDI） of each species group, 8) determine aroad-effect width, 9) multiply the number on the habitat impact layer by the HDI of each species group,10) sum up the weighted habitat impacts within the road-effect zone for all the species groups, 11)repeat steps 5 to 10 and analyze sensitivities of the 2 parameters: the assigned habitat values at the step5 and the road-effect width at the step 8 and 12) interpret the output. We conducted a case studyalong US highway 93 in the Flathead Reservation, Montana, U.S.A. to observe the resourcefulness ofthe results derived from the proposed procedure in relation to the sensitivity of the parameters. White-opaque Switching in Different Mating Type-like Locus Gene Types of Clinical Candida albicans Isolates
