Spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy with conservation of the splenic artery and vein

PreservaUon of the spleen at distal pancreatectomy has recently attracted considerable attention. Since our first successful trial, spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy with conservation of the splenic artery and vein for tumors of the pancreas and chronic pancreatitis has been performed more frequently. The technique for spleenpreserving distal pancreatectomy with conservation of the splenic artery and vein are outlined. The splenic vein is identified behind the pancreas and within the thin connective tissue membrane. The connective tissue membrane is cut longitudinally above the splenic vein. An important issue is to remove the splenic vein from the body of the pancreas toward the spleen, since a different approach may be very difficult. The pancreas is preferably removed from the splenic artery toward the head of the pancreas itself. This procedure is much easier than removing the pancreas from the vein side. One patient had undergone distal gastrectomy for duodenal ulcer, with reconstruction by Billroth Ⅱ tehcnique. If distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy had been performed for the lesion of the distal pancreas at the time, the residual stomach would also have to be resected. The potential damage done to the patient by reconstruction of the gastrointestinal tract in combination with distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy would have been much greater than with distal pancreatectomy only with preservation of the spleen and residual stomach. Benign lesions as well as low-grade malignancy of the body and tail of the pancreas may be a possible indication for this procedure.

Solvent-Induced Phase-Inversion and Electrical Actuation of Dielectric Copolymer Films

Block copolymers posses inherently the ability of form a variety of phase-separated microdomain structures. The lengths of block segments and the selectivity of the solvent are primary factors affecting the resultant morphology. This paper investigated the effect of casting solvents on the morphologies and electrical actuation of poly(methyl methacrylate)-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA-PnBA-PMMA) triblock copolymer films comprising PMMA hard segment and PnBA soft segment. Transmission electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy observation revealed that PMMA and PnBA segments were assembled into various micro- and nano-sized phase structures where either of them formed continuous phase. This implies that continous phase could be inversed by used casting solvents. Solvent-dependent phase morphologies had a significant effect on the electrical actuation results. Increase of the PnBA contents and the continuous phases of PnBA soft segments improved both of electrical actuation and dielectric constant, indicating that solvent-induced phase separation modulates the electrical actuation of dielectric films. The significance of the role of solvent selectivity and the major continuous phase of the polymer in defining the morphology and electrical actuation of the self-assembled block copolymer structure are discussed.

Restricted Daily Feeding of Liquid Meal Reduces the Motivation of Rats to Get Food

To corroborate the hypothesis that mastication affects the motivation to get food, we examined the effects of dietary consistency on the development of meal anticipation in locomotor activity of rats subjected to restricted daily feeding (RF), in which food supply was restricted to a fixed time each day. RF of both liquid and solid meals produced anticipatory locomotor activity. However, the strength of the activity in rats subjected to RF of liquid meal was lower than that in rats subjected to RF of solid meal. These results suggest that the feeding-associated circadian oscillation that developed by feeding with liquid meal is less potent than that in the case of feeding with solid meal. Furthermore, mastication for digesting solid meal might be one of the factors that determine the strength of the feeding-associated circadian oscillation.

The Ventral Ascending Noradrenergic Bundles Are Involved in the Stress Response to Immobilization in Rats

Stressful stimuli induced by immobilization are perceived as acute stress in rats. This acute stress activates corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) neurons in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), resulting in stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The ventral ascending noradrenergic bundles (V-NAB) from the brainstem innervate the PVN. To investigate the relationship between the response of the HPA axis and the V-NAB, we examined changes in plasma corticosterone, the final output of the HPA axis, and extracellular noradrenaline (NA) in the PVN following immobilization stress in rats that received bilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesions of the V-NAB. 6-OHDA microinjection into the V-NAB reduced the magnitude of the responses of plasma corticosterone and extracellular NA in the PVN following immobilization stress. Our results suggest that V-NAB innervation of the PVN is involved in immobilization stress-induced activation of the HPA axis.

AIM：To examine the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 （ICAM-1） and lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1（LFA-1）expression on canals of Hering （COH）and bile ductules associated with the autoimmune process of bile duct destruction in primary biliary cirrhosis（PBC）．METHODS：Ten wedged liver biopsies of PBC（five cases each of stages 2 and 3）were studied. The liver specimens were processed for transmission electron microscopy. Immunohistochemistry was performed using anti-ICAM-1 and anti-LFA-1 mouse *** situ hybridization was done to examine the messenger RNA expression of ICAM-1 in ***-embedded sections using peptide nucleic acid probes and the catalyzed signal amplification （CSA）***-silver staining for electron microscopy was Derrormed using anti-ICAM and anti-LFA-1 mouse *** immunogold particles on epithelial cells of bileductules and cholangiocytes of CoH cells were counted and analyzed *** blotting was performed to confirm ICAM-1 protein expression．RESULTS：In liver tissues of PBC ***-stochemistry showed aberrant ICAM-1 expression on the plasma membrane of epithelial cells lining bile ductules，and also on mature cholangiocytes but not on hepatocytes in ***-1-positive lymphocytes were closely associated with epithelial cells in bile ***-1 expression at protein level was confirmed by Western *** situ hybridization demonstrated ICAM-1 mRNA expression in bile ductules and LFA-1 mRNA in lymphocytes infiltrating the *** immunoelectron microscopy，ICAM-1 was demonstrated on the basal suface of epithelial cells in bile ductules and on the luminal surfaces of cholangiocytes in damaged *** with intermediate morphology resembling progenitor cells in Coil were not labeled with ICAM-1 and LFA-1．CONCLUSION：De novo expression of ICAM-1 both on mature cholangiocytes in COH and epithelial cells in bile ductules in PBC implies that lymphocyte-indu

Development of Battery-Less Wireless Current Sensor Node Utilizing Charging Time of Capacitors with Wide Measurement Range

We report a novel battery-less wireless current sensor node without an analog to digital converter (ADC). If a capacitor is charged using a current transformer (CT) and a rectifying circuit, the charging time depends on the current flowing through a power line. In the case that the node transmits data every time when voltage of the capacitor exceeds a threshold voltage, we can indirectly measure the current by measuring the transmission intervals. In this method, the circuit of the node can be simplified and power consumption for the wireless transmission can be decreased because the measured current data does not need to be included in the transmitted packet. However, the measurable range is about single digit because the transmission interval decreases suddenly as the current increases. In this work, we have ex- panded the range using one CT, one wireless transmission module, and two charging circuits that include different load resistors connected in series. The results indicated that the measurable range was from 0.5 A to 50 A.

Although the nicotinamide nucleotides NAD（H） and NADP（H） are essential for various metabolic reactions that play major roles in maintenance of cellular homeostasis, the significance of NAD biosynthesis is not well under- stood. Here, we investigated the dynamics of pollen nicotinamide nucleotides in response to imbibition, a representative germination cue. Metabolic analysis with capillary electrophoresis electrospray ionization mass spectrometry revealed that excess amount of NAD＊ is accumulated in freshly harvested dry pollen, whereas it dramatically decreased immedi- ately after contact with water, importantly, excess of NAD~ impaired pollen tube growth. Moreover, NAD~ accumulation was retained after pollen was imbibed in the presence of NAD^-consuming reaction inhibitors and pollen germination was greatly retarded. Pollen deficient in the nicotinate/nicotinamide mononucleotide adenyltransferase （NMNAT） gene, encoding a key enzyme in NAD biosynthesis, and a lack of NAD＊ accumulation in the gametophyte, showed precocious pollen tube germination inside the anther Iocule and vigorous tube growth under high-humidity conditions. Hence, the accumulation of excess NAD＊ is not essential for pollen germination, but instead participates in regulating the timing of germination onset. These results indicate that NAD＋ accumulation acts to negatively regulate germination and a decrease in NAD＋ plays an important role in metabolic state transition.

M-ary FSK Modulation Using Short Packet without a Preamble and Error Detection Codes for Low Power Wireless Communication

Since power of a wireless sensor node is limited, low power communication technology has been required. M-ary frequency shift keying (MFSK) modulation with orthogonal signals is one of the methods to decrease the power. However, if the amount of transmitted data including such as an identification number (ID) of a node and measured data is small, a ratio of the data length to the total packet length, which means transmission efficiency, becomes quite low. Because a preamble and error check codes are generally added to a packet for synchronization between a transmitter and a receiver and for decrease in reception errors, respectively. In this research, we have developed a method with digital filters which eliminates the other signals from time series frequency spectra not to use a preamble and error check codes. Although estimated synchronization loss of the method was less than 1.6 dB, it was found that the loss of the method on error packet rate was almost 0 dB at more than 0.001 of packet error rate by a simulation made by BASIC. These results indicate a possibility to realize that a packet which consists of only two symbols can be received with no error if the transmitted data is less than 14 bits using 128-FSK.

Background:We aimed to investigate risk factors predicting oxygen demand in COVID-19 ***:Patients admitted to Shizuoka General Hospital with COVID-19 from August 2020 to August 2021 were ***,we divided patients into groups with and without oxygen ***,we compared patients’clinical characteristics and laboratory and radiological findings to determine factors predicting oxygen ***:One hundred seventy patients with COVID-19(aged 58±15 years,57 females)were *** comorbidities were cardiovascular diseases(47.6%),diabetes mellitus(28.8%),and dyslipidemia(26.5%).Elder age,higher body mass index,cardiovascular diseases,diabetes mellitus,lower lymphocyte count,albumin,hep-atic attenuation value,and the liver-to-spleen ratio(L/S),higher D-dimer,aspartate aminotransferase,lactate dehydrogenase,troponin-T,C-reactive protein,KL-6,chest and abdominal circumference,and visceral fat were found in patients with oxygen *** to the multivariate logistic regression analysis,L/S,lympho-cyte count,D-dimer,and abdominal circumference under the diaphragm were independent risk factors predicting oxygen demand in COVID-19 ***:On admission,L/S,lymphocyte count,D-dimer,and abdominal circumference were predictive factors for oxygen *** factors may help in the appropriate triage of COVID-19 patients in the decision to admit them to the hospital.
