AIM To study the clinical findings and characteristic features in sciatic notch dumbbell tumors(SNDTs).METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the clinical outcomes and characteristic features of consecutive cases of SNDTs(n = 8). RESULTS Buttock masses occurred in three patients with SNDT(37.5%). Severe buttock tenderness and pain at rest were observed in seven patients with SNDTs(87.5%). Remarkably, none of the patients with SNDTs experienced back pain. Mean tumor size was 8.4 ± 2.0 cm(range, 3.9 to 10.6 cm) and part of the tumor mass was detected in 2 patients in the sagittal view of lumbar magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).CONCLUSION The clinical information regarding to SNDTs is scarce. The authors consider that above mentioned characteristic findings may facilitate the suspicion of pelvic pathology and a search for SNDT by MRI or computed tomography should be considered in patients presenting with sciatica without evidence of spinal diseases.

Process water of a pulp mill with kraft cooking, oxygen delignification and chlorine bleaching or chlorine dioxide (ECF) bleaching was examined from an aspect of a new level for environmental water quality in Japan. According to the new level, a concentration of dioxins consisting of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in environmental water is restricted to less than 1 pg- TEQ/L. We clarified that the 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzofuran (TCDF) concentrations were 0.5 pg/L or less. In addition, a main source of 1,3,6,8- and 1,3,7,9-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins in the process water seemed to be an agrochemical in water supplied from a river.

Picosecond burst pulse machining with temporal energy modulation

Suppression of stress and crack generation during picosecond laser processing in transparent brittle materials such as glass was successfully demonstrated by a picosecond laser pulse with temporal energy modulation. The origin of deterioration in processing accuracy could be interpreted in terms of the discontinuous movement of plasma in the vicinity of the focus. To reveal the effectiveness of the temporal energy modulation for smooth machining, such plasma motion was simulated by the finite-difference time-domain method. Furthermore, photoinduced birefringence was observed using a high-speed polarization camera.

Paraneoplastic syndromes are signs or symptoms that occur as a result of organ or tissue damage at locations remote from the site of the primary tumor or metastases. Paraneoplastic syndromes associated with lung cancer can impair various organ functions and include neurologic, endocrine, dermatologic, rheumatologic, hematologic, and ophthalmological syndromes, as well as glomerulopathy and coagulopathy(Trousseau's syndrome). The histological type of lung cancer is generally dependent on the associated syndrome, the two most common of which are humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy in squamous cell carcinoma and the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion in small cell lung cancer. The symptoms often precede the diagnosis of the associated lung cancer, especially when the symptoms are neurologic or dermatologic. The proposed mechanisms of paraneoplastic processes include the aberrant release of humoral mediators, such as hormones and hormone-like peptides, cyto-kines, and antibodies. Treating the underlying cancer is generally the most effective therapy for paraneoplastic syndromes, and treatment soon after symptom onset appears to offer the best potential for symptom improvement. In this article, we review the diagnosis, potential mechanisms, and treatments of a wide variety of paraneoplastic syndromes associated with lung cancer.

In this paper, the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation Moving Vector with Kalman filter (GSMaP_MVK) was evaluated and corrected at daily time scales with a spatial resolution of 0.1°;latitude/longitude. The reference data came from thirty-four rain gauges on Kyushu Island, Japan. This study focused on the GSMaP_MVK’s ability to detect heavy rainfall patterns that may lead to flooding. Statistical analysis was used to evaluate the GSMaP_MVK data both quantitatively and qualitatively. The statistical analysis included the relative bias (B), the mean error (E), the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (CNS), the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and the correlation coefficient (r). In addition, Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) were used to conduct GSMaP_MVK data correction. The results of these analyses indicate that GSMaP_MVK data have lower values than observed data and may be significantly underestimated during heavy rainfall. By applying GAM to bias correction, GSMaP_MVK’s ability to detect heavy rainfall was improved. In addition, GAM for bias correction could effectively be applied for significant underestimates of GSMaP_ MVK (i.e., bias of more than 55%). GAM is a new approach to predict rainfall amount for flood and landslide monitoring of satellite base precipitation, especially in areas where rain gauge data are limited.

There is no standard treatment for peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) from gastric cancer.A novel multidisciplinary treatment combining bidirectional chemotherapy [neoadjuvant intraperitoneal-systemic chemotherapy protocol (NIPS)],peritonectomy,hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (HIPEC) and early postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy has been *** this article,we assess the indications,safety and eff icacy of this treatment,review the relevant studies and introduce our *** aims of NIPS are stage reduction,the eradication of peritoneal free cancer cells,and an increased incidence of complete cytoreduction (CC-0) for PC.A complete response after NIPS was ob-tained in 15 (50%) out of 30 patients with ***,a signif icantly high incidence of CC-0 can be obtained in patients with a peritoneal cancer index (PCI) ≤ *** a multivariate analysis to examine the survival benef it,CC-0 and NIPS are identified as significant indicators of a good ***,the high morbidity and mortality rates associated with peritonectomy and perioperative chemotherapy make stringent patient selection *** best indications for multidisciplinary therapy are localized PC (PCI≤6) from resectable gastric cancer that can be completely removed during a *** and complete cytoreduction are essential treatment modalities for improving the survival of patients with PC from gastric cancer.

采用热溶剂萃取法从低阶煤和生物质废弃物中获得了一种萃取物,此萃取物收率高达61%,在100℃左右开始软化。然后以此萃取物为前驱体,通过热熔纺丝-有机溶剂处理-缓慢氧化-炭化的方法制得了炭纤维。通过元素分析、傅里叶变换红外光谱(FTIR)、电子显微镜(SEM)等对炭纤维的形貌结构、物相组成等进行了表征分析,结果表明此炭纤维的基本性质与商业炭纤维相似。本方法是一种具有一定实际可行性的炭纤维制备新途径。
